In His Grip
For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— not by works, so that no one can boast. For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do. Ephesians 2:8-10 (NIV)

[email protected] Count the Cost Jesus said in parables that you must estimate the cost before building, or going into battle. Do you have enough money to complete the project? Do you have enough troops to overcome the enemy? But in telling the parable He was very clear to say that if we would follow Him, we have to count the cost. Being a disciple of Jesus is costly. Does worship cost anything? No, we don’t charge admission to church services. There are people who say that that’s what the plate we pass is for, but that would be missing the point. What does worship cost you? I think if we were really honest, it doesn’t cost us anything. In fact, for a lot of us, if we get a better offer, we’re going there instead. Look at King David in 1 Chronicles 21. God had asked him to worship and sacrifice (they literally sacrificed on an altar) to atone for a mistake he made. There were specific instructions to go to the threshing floor of a farmer and build an altar there for the sacrifice and worship. King David asked to purchase the property so he could obey God in worship. The farmer offered to give his King not only the land, but the animal and the wood for the sacrifice. He wanted to give it to the King as homage. It’s a noble offer. But listen to King David’s words in response, “But King David replied to Araunah, “No, I insist on paying the full price. I will not take for the Lord what is yours, or sacrifice a burnt offering that costs me nothing.” (1 Chronicles 21:24) So again I ask, what does worship cost you? I guarantee that making worship a priority will put a damper on some other design. Some other plan or perk or opportunity will have to go by the wayside if we insist on putting worship first. Some of it might hurt. If that’s the case, then it is possible that we’re serving it instead of God. The things we choose instead of Christian worship become our gods. Here’s a better question: What do you need to let go of so you can make worship a priority? What will it take for you to be a part of worship and fellowship twice a month if you only come once? If you come three times, what does it mean for you to come all four in a month? What keeps us from truly putting the Kingdom first? If we can lay those things aside, imagine who we could be as the people of God. Let us not sacrifice that which costs us nothing. Whatever the price is, it’s worth it. Humbly,
Dave
Fall Preaching/Teaching Series : BELIEVE This fall we are embarking on a 30-week journey called Believe. Our goal for this series is to anchor every member of your family in the core teachings of Scripture: the 10 key beliefs, 10 key practices, and 10 key virtues of a Christian. We want your whole family—and our whole church—to learn how to think, act, and be more like Jesus. This journey is guided by Randy Frazee’s book called Believe. Each chapter uses carefully selected Scripture from the New International Version to help us live the story of the Bible. As we journey through this book, whether in a group or on your own, one simple truth will become undeniably clear: What you believe drives everything. The book: Believe can be purchased at most bookstores. It is also available through Amazon.com. LIFE Groups: Most of our LIFE Groups will be using the Believe study. Talk to Zach Garrett about how to join a LIFE Group this fall.

[email protected] What is our Faith@Home Ministry? Deuteronomy 6:5-7 reads, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. These commandments that I give you today are to be upon your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.” As parents and guardians we understand that we will inevitably pass certain things on to our children. Some things will be humorous, some will make us proud, and some will make us cringe, feeling like we should apologize to the poor child. On a positive note, you do get to choose some of the things to pass on. Determining what these things might be, you might start by thinking about who you want your child to become. Do you want your child to be madly in love with God? Do you want your child to seek God’s wisdom? Do you want your child to experience the overwhelming joy of everlasting life? Do you want your child to mirror the image of Christ? If so, then according to Deuteronomy 6, it begins with you. You are the primary spiritual influence in your child’s life. However, just because you are the primary example and influence, it does not mean you have to be the only one. It is the responsibility of the church to equip you, prepare you, assist you, stand with you, and encourage you as you nurture your child’s faith. That’s why we at FCC began Faith @ Home many years ago. The Faith @ Home events we do throughout the year are designed to equip you with specific faith skills and tools that will help you lead your child spiritually. Here’s how it works: Each month we have a different Faith @ Home event. Each event is for children of a specific age and their parents, guardians, or grandparents. During each event we teach how to pass a specific faith skill on to their children. The exciting part about the events is that they are interactive. During each event we explain the skill, inspire you with success stories, model how to do it so you can see exactly what it looks like, practice the skill together, and then we send a tool home with you that will help you succeed in using your faith skill with your children! Be on the lookout in the Reporter and the Bulletin for our next Faith @ Home event! Jesse

Shiloh Christian Children’s Ranch In the middle of July my wife and I had the chance to take a group of students to Shiloh Christian Children’s Ranch in Clarence, MO. Shiloh was started back in 1977 by two men, Mr. Don McCain and Mr. Stan Way. There are two locations, one in Clarence, MO and one in Kahoka, MO. The Clarence, MO site currently has five houses on location where children are housed by married couples who's mission it is to love these children in a godly way. The children learn how to work hard and everyone throws in a helping hand around the ranch. It was an experience unlike anything I had ever been a part of before. The ranch was gorgeous, the people were uplifting, and the work they are doing is incredible. We stayed with the Van Dykes, who had only been in town for about a year, and only been on the ranch since late June. Mr. Van Dyke was a principal at the local middle school that many of the Shiloh kids attend. His wife was a stay at home mom and they attended Shelbina Christian Church. Through the church they joined a life group that met with several other couples at one of the family’s houses that live on the ranch. Through those relationships and time spent on the ranch they decided to become Shiloh parents. They began the process and a few short months later this is their full time job, loving kids who need it the most. The Van Dykes opened their home to us, shared great conversation with us, told us their stories, and cooked for us (man can they cook!) They were the first step in our Shiloh journey, and we are thankful for them. As well as getting to know our house family, we also got to meet all the other house families that were on site. Each family had a heart of gold. We went swimming in the pond, did a little bit of fishing, and a whole lot of laughing. But it wasn't all fun and games while we were there, we worked hard as well, and so did everyone else. Our students were willing and ready to do whatever task needed to be done that day. One morning we washed every vehicle on site, around 13 or 14, and several of those were 15 passenger vans. That afternoon we picked, shucked, and de-cobbed 133 quarts of sweet corn, all by hand, and everyone on the ranch pitched in. That night we got to go to the church camp that is right next to the ranch and prepare a meal for the kids that were there that week. The next day we went out and started working again, this time it was in the pumpkin, squash, and gourd field. We worked together in teams and pulled more weeds than you can think of! We pulled weeds we didn't even know were there! After that the guys sorted wood while the girls went and took 2x4's off of new concrete that had been laid the week before. They worked hard and learned about something they had never done before. That afternoon a storm blew in so we did a lot of inside work. Some of us were taking down borders, some of us were doing laundry at the houses, some of us were vacuuming, but we all did whatever needed to be done. While being able to cross things off Shiloh’s list of things to get done was great, the conversations had were even better. Getting to talk with some of the kids that had chosen to come to Shiloh and hearing their stories was a blessing. They opened up and talked about why they were there, how long they had been there and how their lives have been changed by the experiences in their past. Those types of conversations really stick with you, and you begin to understand exactly what it is that Shiloh is doing. Getting to hear the conversations that the students were having with the Shiloh kids was awesome as well, real friendships were built and two of the students even decided to become pen pals. The conversations at night after everything had calmed down and we were back in our host home was also great. Listening to our students share stories with each other, laughing, sometimes to the point of tears, talking about life, and wanting to stay close after the trip was FOOD PANTRY an amazing thing. Overall, I think Shiloh helped us more than we helped them. They shared their hearts with us, their DONATIONS homes with us, their children with us, and made us feel like Throughout the month of August family and we are so thankful for that. we will be collecting Soup & Crackers God is blessing Shiloh Christian Children’s Ranch. for the Salem Food Pantry. Check them out, you might be able to as well. Items can be left in the collection box in the foyer.

New Years can be an exciting time for people when thinking about new beginnings and second chances, a time to clean off the old slate to try to do it better. For Life Groups that moment of renewal comes at the end of August when summer plans are wrapping up, kids are heading back to school, and that special night of the week is about to be group time again. Now, there are mixed emotions about this, I know because I’m having them too. Some groups are needing a totally new dynamic, some have been stagnant and need growth, and some are still having their socks blessed off by this time of Christian community that God loves. Whether right now your group is great, okay, or in need of revision, I want to work with you to move into something GREATER this fall because I know it’s there. Waiting. A fountain of spiritual blessings that need only be sought and found, and we’re going to do that.
Something new we’re starting this year is a child-care program for Life Group members who are parents of kids age birth-elementary. I know finding sitters has been a big burden for groups, and a turnoff for some when it comes to making a commitment to a Life Group. It is my honest hope that we have eliminated this worry and burden so you can enjoy your group time to the fullest! This Sunday evening child-care service (at present only for Life Group parents) will be every Sunday evening from 5:30 to 7pm here at the church, except for a holiday break in December and in the summer. Last but not least! On August 21st, we are going to have our Fall Kickoff from 5:30 to 7pm in the gym. On this night we will also initiate the child-care service for groups, thus you are encouraged to bring your children so they too can experience intentional Christian community. More details will be popping up in the bulletin, on the screen, and from the stage as we get closer to time. I just want you put this on your calendar and plan to be there, because it’s always a good time, and a great way to start out a new year of groups!
So look for me and other group leaders out in the foyer over the next several weeks as we will be having Life Group signups for those not already in groups. If you have questions, we are here to answer them as well! A Servant of Christ Jesus, Zach

[email protected] Acts chapter 6 is an account in the early life of the church where a group of Grecian widows where being neglected in the distribution of food. The apostles did not deny the problem; rather, they initiated a plan to solve it. The delegated a group of servants (deacons), provided authority to serve, and trusted them to meet the need without second guessing the process. Think of what might have happened if the apostles had not been Spirit-filled men and good leaders. Suppose they had tried to control all aspects of the work. The quality of their own time in the Word and prayer would certainly have suffered. Before long, the effect would be seen in a decline in the spiritual growth of the flock, and then in the size and health of the flock. Or, the apostles might have formed a committee to meet and talk about the legitimacy of the need, budget needs, the number of volunteers needed, a menu, scheduling…We’re going to need more meetings! Sadly, “action” committees often turn into “inaction” committees. Or, a split might have occurred in which the “Grecian Widows Matter” sect withdrew from the “All Widows Matter” branch, each with their own supportive apostles. Of course it is silly to imagine such things, but are they much different from some of the things that have happened in the history of the church? These things are written for our learning, and wise people will value the lessons they provide. In His Grip, Phil
