INSIDE THE LINES The Open is ‘Open’—Are You In? The US Open is now officially “open” to all challengers. For the first time since the gentleman’s singles and doubles of the U.S. Championships debuted in 1881, any player 14 years or older—regardless of aspiration, ability level or prior experience—will have the opportunity to play for a spot in the 2010 US Open as part of the inaugural US Open National Playoffs. The US Open National Playoffs began this spring with a series of 16 qualifying tournaments held in different sections throughout the country. The men’s and women’s champion from each of the 16 sectional qualifying tournaments advance to the US Open National Playoffs – Men’s and Women’s Championships, which will

be held this summer at the same venue as an Olympus US Open Series event (Atlanta for the men; Stanford, Calif., for the women). It is a challenging assignment, with a potential of 12 matches to be won across two separate events, but the payoff is well worth the effort: A spot in the 2010 US Open Qualifying Tournament, held August 24-27 at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y. Each sectional qualifying tournament is limited to 256 players, and players will not be seeded. Competitors can enter any of the 16 sectional qualifying tournaments, but they can only enter and compete in

one. The entry fee is $125, and all players competing must have a current USTA membership valid through August 30. Skier Bode Miller, a five-time Olympic medalist and two-time overall World Cup champion, is one of the many talented athletes scheduled to compete. He will be joined by a host of touring pros and top regional, collegiate, junior and club players hoping to fulfill a dream of playing in the 2010 US Open.
