spotlight on insulation
Insulate your customers
against future costs With all the worry about the environment, it’s not a coincidence that some of New Zealand’s major companies are trying to lead by example. After a bit of research, we’ve found that for example Tasman Insulation (aka Pink Batts) is really going that extra mile. A few things the company has already done: • Replacing its old gas fired furnace with a new electric meter, a $7 million dollar investment which means it now draws from the electricity grid, with its high proportion of renewable energy, instead of using a fossil fuel. • Adopting energy efficient lighting that has saved 13,000 kW hours a year; by using energy efficient lighting that produces less heat there’s the added benefit of reducing air conditioning. • The company has already installed a highly efficient filtration device known as a Wet Electrostatic Precipitator at its main production plant. This should reduce emissions from the stack by 93.4%. There is also a plan in motion to install waste water recycling, which will reduce water usage and reduce waste water discharge. Looking further into the future, 2014 and onwards, the people at Pink Batts plan to: • Replace the conveyor system to reduce waste caused by malfunctions.

• Investigate the feasibility of reusing waste heat from processes to cut energy bills and emissions. Tasman Insulation’s commitment to the environment has been recognised by Environmental Choice New Zealand, which has independently assessed their higher R-value products, including waste minimisation, energy management, manufacturing process and product characteristics. www.pinkbatts.co.nz COMMUNICATING COMFORT + COST SAVINGS The classic insulation pitch is comfort + cost savings. If you needed any further information on this, for example Autex’s resources point out that in the last decade electricity costs have increased significantly and that homeowners can reduce the effect of future rises by choosing better insulation. A fully insulated house needs about half the heating of a house that isn’t insulated so the pitch is that paying a bit more for insulation now will save you money well into the future. It is fact that increased savings each year will eventually pay for the insulation that will continue to save money, year after year. Insulating walls with products like GreenStuf can help maintain a more even temperature in a home, year-round and help reduce home heating costs. But this is something best discussed when the More at

customer is planning a build or renovation. Elsewhere, for both new builds and retrofit scenarios, products like GreenStuf Underfloor will significantly reduce heat loss and drafts caused by joins in the floor. Another accessible DIY option is wrapping a hot water cylinder with products like EcoWrap. This is very easy to achieve and doesn’t require specialist skills or tools. EcoWrap adds heat-loss protection and increases the efficiency of your electric hot water cylinder.
“Electricity costs have increased significantly but homeowners can reduce the effect of future rises by choosing better insulation” Insulation can also build noise barriers. If help is required, advise customers to first identify: • Rooms that need extra sound insulation to keep noise out (ie bedrooms, the office/study). • Rooms that need extra sound insulation to keep noise in (ie home theatre rooms, en-suite and bathrooms, laundry, internal garage and rumpus rooms). Other tricks are to try to separate living areas from sleeping areas
New diesel heater range McGibbon Dunne & Co Ltd is offering the Unotec range of EPA (ERMA) approved and fully compliant diesel heaters to the hardware industry in New Zealand. Ventilation Clearance spotlight on insulation
Ventilation Clearance
High performance insulation for Kiwi conditions Pink Batts Skillion Roof, Pink Batts 140mm Wall and Pink Batts Steel Framed Wall insulation products are designed for specific roof and wall cavities to ensure thermal performance in the New Zealand environment. All three are available in a range of high performance R-values to meet and exceed New Zealand building code requirements. The Pink Batts Skillion Roof and Pink Batts 140mm Wall insulation products are also BRANZ appraised to provide independent assurance of durability. Pink Batts Skillion Roof is designed for use in skillion roof constructions while maintaining the Ventilation Clearance mandatory clearances for ventilation. Standard insulation is often too thick for restricted skillion roof cavities, resulting in restricted ventilation and compressed insulation that reduces the R-value performance. To ensure durability and performance, Pink Batts Skillion Roof insulation provides extra ventilation. Standard 140mm thick roof products offer a clearance only when there is a batten, Pink Batts Skillion roof insulation allows for an extra 25mm, offering a total of greater ventilation while still providing and R-value of R3.2 for 140mm rafters and R3.6 for 190mm 140mm Rafters. This extra clearance is important as historically there have been some moisture related problems associated with skillion roofs caused by inadequate ventilation. Standard wall insulation products are designed for 90mm wall framing. The Pink Batts 140mm wall range is specifically designed to offer a choice of high performance R-values to suit
– use hallways to help isolate home theatre rooms from living and sleeping areas. Sound travels easily through acoustic weak points so your customers should make sure joints in walls and ceilings are as airtight as possible. Plasterboard joints in walls and ceilings should be sealed with acoustic sealant as the plasterboard is being installed. For a typical internal residential wall, based on the minimum construction being one layer of 10mm plasterboard each side of a single 90mm timber stud frame, the addition of GreenStuf Sound
140mm wall framing. Unlike many other 140mm insulation 140mm products Pink Batts 140mm Wall Insulation is specifically designed for wall applications. Pink 140mm Batts 140mm provides superior durability as it is manufactured with the unique Pink Batts wall formulation to ensure the product does not sag or deteriorate over time. The BRANZ Appraisal provides independent assurance of the 50-year durability requirement of the New Zealand Building Code. In late 2011 the Pink Batts range was extended to include insulation products like Steel Framed Wall insulation developed to make installation in steel framed walls faster and neater. The pieces are slightly larger than standard wall insulation and when installed in steel framing may fit more securely as the C section profile enables the insulation to slip easily into the stud which helps hold it in place. The new products come in two R-values – Pink Batts Steel R2.2 wall and Pink Batts Steel R2.6 wall – and are especially designed 1220 x 610mm size for installing into steel framing. www.pinkbatts.co.nz
Solution in the cavity will also help reduce noise through the wall. Another trick is to try and make sure power-points are not set back-to-back between rooms, and that recessed down lights are minimised downstairs. To help the retailer’s task, Autex advises consumers: “don’t let anyone talk you into cheap alternatives. Choose proven products and sensible design, and remember a few dollars saved at construction could result in poor performance for a lifetime.” www.autexindustries.com
