Who is considered a Prospective Student-Athlete? A prospect, or a prospective student-athlete, is any student who has entered the 9th grade. The NCAA, however, does not have a minimum age limit. As a result, a student of any age who is contacted for recruitment purposes becomes a prospect. It is important to treat ALL athletes as prospects.

Who is considered a Student-Athlete? A student becomes a student-athlete when the student reports to the University and participates in any practice activities, competition activities, or attends classes at the University. The studentathlete does not have to receive a scholarship or have been recruited in order to be considered a student-athlete. If a student participates (practice or competition) in a NCAA sponsored sport at any institution, he or she is considered a studentathlete.

What is an Extra Benefit? An extra benefit is any special arrangement by an institutional employee or a representative of the institution’s athletics interest (”Booster”) to provide a student-athlete or his/her relatives or friends a benefit that is not expressly authorized by the NCAA. Be careful about what you do for a prospect or student-athlete. A student-athlete who accepts a non-permissible benefit could be rendered ineligible for athletic participation. Please be sure to check with the Athletics Compliance Office for any questions regarding prospects.
Pittsburg State University is ultimately responsible for your actions as a representative of athletics interest (“Booster”). If you violate NCAA rules, the University will be penalized by the NCAA. This publication only includes the most frequently raised questions and issues. The NCAA has many regulations that are not addressed in this publication and changes, in the form of legislative interpretations, are frequently made to these rules. Therefore, this guide should not be relied upon exclusively.

Intercollegiate Athletics A guide to NCAA Rules and Regulations for Boosters, Alumni and Friends of Athletics
You.... have received this guide because you
have been identified as a “friend” of the Pitt State Athletic Program. Thanks to your unending support, the Gorilla family of student-athletes and coaches continue to flourish both on and off the field. In order to maintain and improve upon the level of success that the Gorillas have attained, PSU needs your help. Please take a few moments to look over this guide to help with some questions you may have in connection with our student-athletes, our prospective student-athletes, and our coaches. It should act as a basic reminder of NCAA, MidAmerica Intercollegiate Athletics Association, and PSU rules and regulations. Always remember to ask before you act! The most important quality an intercollegiate athletic program can display is its integrity. Your actions can inadvertently have an adverse effect on the eligibility of our prospective student-athletes, current student-athletes, and the athletics program. Any questions can be directed to the Pittsburg State University Intercollegiate Athletics Compliance Office at 620-235-4067.
