Interfaith Chapel of Purification

Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge, Dorchester County on Maryland’s Eastern Shore Undergraduate Submission Design Studio

The project is a non-denominational worship and meditation space set the natural environment of Blackwater Wildlife Refuge. The goal is to develop a space that is universal and encourages connections between individuals and the environment through a defined path. Striving to create a sense of spirituality, peace and contemplation through light, scale, form and nature the design demonstrates a responsible relationship with the environment through the use of sustainable and recycled materials and alternative energy sources. Using design principles of hierarchy, a three dimension grid organized the cluster of forms. The structure represents the natural filtration process that occurs from the vegetation and elements of the area. A portal signifies the beginning of the procession through the site using the structure to evoke a sense of collection and release along the path from the pervious parking to the main building. The same feeling of collection occurs when entering through the vestibule of the main chapel and then proceeding through the main sanctuary. This sensation from the journey through the site represents the collection of personal burdens or sins that can be released through the process of meditation and worship once reaching the chapel. The structure of the chapel is constructed of sustainable materials that take advantage of the natural site and highlight the area. Using heavy timber forms with the use of Kalwall and transparent glass panels allow the design and building to receive a potential high LEED accreditation based on the v.4 guidelines. The Kalwall Panels provide high insulation value and allow for areas of the building to be private with natural daylighting while having other areas of transparent glass that allow the observer to be a part of the environment.
