Indoor Volleyball Rules Intramural Volleyball will be played by the following rules. Team captains are responsible for the ensuring the eligibility and conduct of all team players. Every participant is responsible for following the rules and regulations outlined in the Intramural Handbook. Hamline 2016/2017 Varsity volleyball players are not allowed to participate.
Rules of the Game NOTE: All rules are governed by the USA Domestic Competition Regulations with the exception of those additional rules and provisions listed below. Official rules can be found at: www.usavolleyball.org
General Provisions: A. Intramural Officials will referee all games. Each team is responsible for making line calls. All participants are expected to assist officials with setup and teardown of nets when possible. B. Open Team – any current Hamline student, faculty, or staff are eligible to play. C. Uniforms: 1. Baseball caps will not be allowed during games. 2. All loose jewelry must be removed during a game (necklace, watch, earring, etc.) 3. Shirts or tee-shirts and tennis shoes must be worn at all times to participate. No sandals or bare feet will be allowed. D. Game volleyballs will be provided by Intramurals. A limited number of volleyballs can be checked out for practice before games on a first come first serve basis at the Recreation Desk.
Other Rules and Regulations:
Teams can be any combination of students, faculty, and staff, with a minimum of four (4) players and a maximum of six (6) on the court at one time.
Matches will be the best of three games (3) and will use rally scoring. Two games will be played to (25) points with a cap of 27 points and the third game, if needed, will be played to (15) points, with a cap of 17 points. Teams must win by two points.
In the first game, the first to serve will be determined by a coin toss or “rock, paper, scissors”. For the second game, the team not initiating the serve in the first game will serve. The third game will be determined by a coin flip.
No official timeouts. Stoppage of play may only occur for injury, equipment failure, or when determined by the Intramural Official or Supervisor.
Server may serve anywhere behind the end line (not necessarily the right hand side) but may not step on or over the line before contact with the ball. Serving order must rotate one position clockwise
Let serves (ball touches net but continues over it) are legal and will be played.
The receiving team must bump or set the ball on a serve, the serve cannot be blocked.
Substitutes do not have to go in for the same person, but must rotate in to serve.
No open hand tips are allowed
Sets over the net must be sent in a square to your body positioning, either in front of or behind.
Sets over the net must be pushed out at least one foot off the net; otherwise it is considered a tip.
Legal Hits: Same as USA Volleyball Regulations. Palming, throwing, scooping, lifting, kicking, heading, or carrying the ball is considered an illegal hit.
A player may step on the center line or go under the net as long as no contact is made with opposing player(s), net, or the play has not been affected.
All judgment calls by the Official will stand as is.
Interruption or postponement of matches (in cases or equipment failure, weather, etc.) will be decided by the Intramural Supervisor.
