IV.
PLAY 1.
A match will consist of the best of 15 games. The first team to win 8 games will be declared the winner of the match.
2.
This is a double elimination tournament. That means after your first loss, you will then be moved into the losers bracket where you will be scheduled to play your next game. After each game check IMleagues.com to see when you play next.
3.
Games will be self-officiated by the players on the court. Players are expected to be fair and resolve conflicts on their own. Intramural Sports Staff will not resolve in-game controversial plays. Intramural Sports Staff will only clarify rules for participants.
4.
Prior to beginning a game, all dodgeballs must be placed along the center line (Short Line) of the court.
5.
Players begin the game with his/her hand touching their respective back wall.
6.
Following a ready for play signal by an established player, teams may approach the center-line to retrieve the dodgeballs. Players may not retrieve a dodgeball until the ready for play signal is given. If a player false starts, or is not in contact with the back wall when the ready for play signal is given, play will be stopped and one dodgeball from the center line will be moved to the opponent’s side of the court. This will repeat for each infraction until a team has all of the dodgeballs in their possession. There is no minimum or maximum number of dodgeballs a team can retrieve to start a game.
7.
Once retrieved to begin a game, a player in possession of a dodgeball must touch the back wall before they can throw their dodgeball. A player MAY NOT pass a dodgeball to another player if they were the first one to possess it to start a game.
8.
The object of the game is to throw the dodgeball at the opposing team and contact one or more of the opponents to get them “out.” A player is out when contacted by a thrown dodgeball on the fly, where the dodgeball has not hit the ground, wall, or ceiling before contacting that person.
9.
A player may also be declared out if: a. Their thrown dodgeball is caught by an opposing player on the fly b. A thrown dodgeball has contacted a teammate and then contacts that player without having hit the ground, wall, or ceiling first c. The dodgeball deflects off an opposing player and is caught by another opposing player, the thrower is out and the player off which the dodgeball deflected is safe d. An opponent deflects the thrown dodgeball with a dodgeball he/she is holding and the dodgeball is then caught, the thrower is out i. However, if the person deflecting the thrown dodgeball drops the dodgeball he/she is holding as a result of it being contacted, he/she is out e. A player crosses the center line

10. A player will not declared out if: a. They are struck in the head while standing erect b. A thrown dodgeball strikes a player, and then is caught by that player’s teammate. Both teammates are safe and the thrower is out
11. Delaying the game (holding dodgeballs, standing in a corner) is not allowed. If a player holds a dodgeball for more than 10 seconds, that player must roll the dodgeball to the opposing team’s side of play. If the player does not forfeit the dodgeball, he/she will be out. 12. A player may block a thrown dodgeball with a dodgeball being held, provided the held dodgeball is not dropped as a result of the contact with the thrown dodgeball. A dodgeball that deflects off a held dodgeball and strikes either the holder or another player is no longer a live dodgeball. 13. A player attempting to make a catch may bobble the dodgeball and still make the catch. If caught, the thrower is out, however, if the dodgeball is dropped, the player attempting to make the catch is out. 14. If a thrown dodgeball contacts the ground, wall, or ceiling it is considered dead and any action after this will be negated. However, any action prior contacting the ground, wall, or ceiling will stand. 15. Once a player is out, they must immediately drop any dodgeballs in their hand(s) and go to the back corner of his/her team’s side for the rest of that game. There is no way for active players to “free” a player who is “out”. Players who have been knocked out should not interfere in any way with the dodgeballs during the remainder of the game. 16. The first team to legally eliminate all opposing players will be declared the winner.
