GOAL •

Propel implement as far as possible without causing damage to oneself.

RULES •

Implement must be certified for weight and diameter.



Must exit back half of circle under control after implement lands



Implement must land in sector

SAFETY •

Safety should always be stressed in all of the throwing events. Whether in practice or competition , athletes, and others around the throwing area need to be educated and aware of the risks and the need to pay attention.

THE DISCUS THROW •

The Grip

THE GRIP •

Bisect Discus • Hold back half • Thumb and forefinger perpendicular

THE WINDUP •

Wind around right leg



Arms perpendicular



Lock disc back



Rhythm



No need to over-wind

THE SWEEP •

Right foot leads



Toe up, long leg



Left foot does not turn beyond right sector line



Left knee down at 90 degrees



Vertical left leg



See where you are going

THE MIDDLE •

Backward 7



Tight knees through single support



Outside of right foot



Upper body relaxed/arms long



Let the circle come up to you

THE POWER POSITION •

Heel-toe relationship



Open left foot



Outside of right foot



Chin with sternum

COMMON ERRORS Rushing out of the back Over-rotating in entry

Throwing the left arm/shoulder into the throw Not waiting for the lower body to act

KEYS TO REMEMBER Keep right foot down as long as possible in entry Slow to fast – allow the throw to develop

Active lower body Good power position

Throw starts from the ground up
