increasingly diverse student population, whose dynamic socio-political, cultural, familial, linguistic and educational backgrounds compel institutions to explore nonconventional, transformative teaching and learning practices to accommodate changing student profiles and expectations, including students with varying disabilities and diverse learning styles.

The transformative agenda includes understanding how the student experience is affected by academic and administrative practices, the delivery of responsive student support, the creation of conducive learning spaces, the provision of appropriate learning technologies and the value of multi-lingual instruction. The development of learning pedagogies and assessment strategies, while finding innovative ways of monitoring performance and promoting quality is also vital. Equally compelling is the need for institutions to be transformed from within, to contribute to social and economic development, while placing students at the centre of the teaching and learning endeavour.

Paper presentations, workshops and posters will profile research into diverse teaching and learning philosophies, pedagogies and approaches that address these challenges and enrich the student experience, demonstrating, for example, how institutions are responding to the imperatives in the Report of the Ministerial Committee on Transformation and Social Cohesion and the Elimination of Discrimination in Public Higher Education Institutions.
