Iow a M ountaineers. The club com pleted another active year in 1987. N early 1260 m em bers participated in one o f the many instructional courses, the m ountaineering cam ps, or the foreign expeditions. The courses and m ountain cam ps were again offered for U niversity o f Iow a credit. U nder the instruction o f Jim Ebert 105 m em bers finished the concentrated one-w eek basic rock clim bing courses held at D evils Lake State Park, W isconsin, and 630 m em bers com pleted the w eekend rock clim bing courses offered to U niversity o f Iow a students. T hree general w eekend outings w ere held at D evils Lake w ith an average attendance o f 50. Jim Ebert planned, led, or instructed m em bers on the follow ing m ountain­ eering cam ps and courses during 1987: D uring D ecem ber, 20 m em bers participated on a seven-day cross-country skiing trip to the C ollegiate range o f C olorado. M em bers built and lived in snow shelters at 11,300 feet near W est T ennessee L akes. D uring January, 70 m em bers participated in tw o w eekend cross-country ski courses at D evils Lake State Park. In early January, 14 m em bers hiked to the bottom o f the G rand C anyon for five days o f hiking and backpacking. D uring M arch, over 40 m em bers participated on a five-day G rand C anyon H avasupai backpacking trip to A rizona.

The clu b ’s annual banquet was held M ay 9 and featured the A laskan film m ade by John and Jim E bert. John Ebert presented the film. O ver 100 people attended. In June a four-day interm ediate rock-clim bing course was sponsored to D evils T ow er in W yom ing. O ver 54 m anned ascents w ere made to the top o f D evils T ow er via four different routes (5.7 to 5.9) by a group o f 22 m em bers. D uring July 21–31 the club held a 10-day m ountaineering cam p in the northern W ind R ivers o f W yom ing. Fourteen m em bers participated in tw o groups. Four people ascended G annett Peak, W yom ing’s highest, and 12 ascended Frem ont Peak. T hree other peaks w ere also ascended. D uring early A ugust a 10-day m ountaineering cam p was held in the Saw tooths o f Idaho. T hirty-four m em bers participated. T w enty-eight m anned ascents were m ade on W arbonnet via four different routes rated from 5 .6 to 5.9; 28 m anned ascents w ere m ade on the Finger o f Fate via four routes rated from 5.7 to 5.9; and eight people ascended M ount H eybum via the Sturr C him ney rated 5 .5 . Four other peaks w ere ascended by m em bers. From A ugust 17–21, 15 m em bers participated on our annual G rand Teton O uting. Six m em bers clim bed the G rand via the O w en-Spalding route while seven other m em bers clim bed the G rand via the Exum R idge. Four m em bers clim bed T eep e’s Pillar and G lenco Spire. T hree m em bers traversed the M iddle Teton via the north ridge and then clim bed the South Teton via the northw est couloir. In 1988 the club will again sponsor six one-w eek basic rock clim bing courses at D evils Lake State Park during M ay, June and A ugust. D evils T ow er will again be ascended during the interm ediate rock-clim bing course from M ay 29-June 2. The main 12-day sum m er m ountaineering cam p will be held in the Purcell M ountain Range in B ritish C olum bia, C anada, from A ugust 2-12. The m ain 1988 foreign expedition will be to East A frica to ascend K ilim anjaro and M ount K enya from June 25-July 24. The club will then go to N ew Z ealand from January 14-February 20, 1989, to ascend peaks on both the N orth and South Islands and to hike the M ilford and R outeburn Tracks; to the Peruvian A ndes from June 24-July 22, 1989, to clim b in the Q uebrada Shallup and later ascend N evado H uantsán and N evado H uascarán; and finally the European A lpine O uting from June 29-July 22, 1990, to ascend the highest and m ost fam ous peaks in six A lpine countries.
