The CRD's Integrated Road Safety Unit kicked off a 6-week awareness campaign today aimed at reminding drivers to "Slow Down and Move Over" when they pass an emergency vehicle on the side of the road. The Traffic Safety Commission says more then 40 emergency workers have been killed or seriously hurt while pulled over on provincial roads since 2001. Cst. Ann Piper, with Central Saanich Police, says she's had several close calls. "I remember a black car coming towards us, and it was so close I was screaming at my colleague to jump out of the way. He'd already seen it -- he was a very experienced member -- but we both felt the car move completely passed us. It almost touched us." As per a change to the Motor Vehicle Act three years ago, drivers are required to slow down and, if it's safe to do so, change lanes when passing any pulled over emergency vehicle. Starting June 1, police all over the region will begin focusing in on offenders, and handing out $173 tickets.
