Designs
Hi! I’m Melissa Prendergast, owner of Bella Sunshine Designs. As a mom of two rambunctious little ones, sewing has been my creative outlet. I love designing adorable dresses for my daughters Isabella and Lilliana. Before long, people asked if I would design cute things for them too. Not wanting to just sew for others, I became inspired to design patterns so others could share in the joy of sewing and making cute things for the little loves in their lives too.

Pages to Print This PDF is not designed to be printed in its entirety. I highly recommend that you only print the pages specified below (pattern pieces only) for the exact size you need. You can then use your computer, laptop, or tablet (via a free service like Dropbox) to view the instructions. This saves you the costs of ink and paper as well as the environment. Who knew going green could be so creative? This pattern includes layered pattern tiles that allow you to choose only the sizes you wish to print. In Adobe Reader, click on the layers icon while the file is open. Click on the eyeball to turn size layers on or off. Be sure to set your printer to not scale the pattern pieces by selecting either “Actual Size” or “Custom Scale: 100%” in your print dialog.
Pages to Print
Please use the chart below for the printing of all pattern pieces. A cutting chart is included on page 10 for those that would rather cut the skirt pieces using a cutting mat.

Assembly of Pattern Pieces
Use the diagram at the left to assemble your pattern pieces. Be sure when printing your pattern that the print square measures correctly when printed. The points are added to the pattern to help you match up the pieces more easily.
Terms of Use
You may make and sell garments made from this pattern. You may not, however, redistribute this pattern either electronically or in printed form. Please respect my many hours of hard work and send your friends and family to my website to purchase their own copy.

Glossary of Terms Edge Stitching / Top Stitching
Edge stitching (also referred to as top stitching) is a simple straight stitch 1/8” (3mm) away from a seam. Edge stitching is done not only to give your garment a more professional look, but to also help the seam, especially ruffles, lay flat.
ZigZag Stitch / Overcast Stitch
ZigZag or Overcast stitches can be used in place of a serger to secure the unfinished edges on the interior of a garment. This prevents fraying in the wash and gives the item a more professional look. It is recommended to trim and finish all seams in this manner in this pattern unless otherwise noted.
Stitch-in-the-Ditch
Stitch-in-the-ditch is when you sew directly in the seam line. This technique is helpful when you don’t want your stitching to be seen as it causes your stitching to disappear in the seam. It takes a little practice to perfect, but adds a professional finish when done correctly. The key is to go slow and take your time.

How to Measure
I recommend taking measurements of yourself to ensure an accurate fit. Grab a tailor’s tape measure (or some string and a ruler) and take the measurements listed above to determine the size. When taking torso measurements, make sure to stay as parallel to the floor as possible. For the most accurate measurements, get a buddy to help you.

Skirt - Plain
This is my favorite skirt to make when I need something that is quick and easy, but still cute. The ribbon detail adds a little extra something to the outfit, and makes it look more complicated than it really is. The simpler version is great when you just want clean lines with no fuss.
Materials Required The following materials are required: • Woven fabric • 1-1/4” Braided Elastic • Ribbon or Trim of any width (Optional)
©Bella Sunshine Designs - Isabella’s Banded Skirt - All Rights Reserved - Page 8
Yardage Required Use the estimates below to determine the amount of fabric needed for skirt. Yardage estimates are based on 45” wide (115cm) fabrics. Add the yardages together if using the same fabric. Note that these yardages do not account extra for matching patterns on the side seams. Imperial (Yards): Skirt Main Skirt Band

Cutting Use the measurements below for cutting the skirt pieces. Prefer pattern pieces? They can be found on pages 16-23. To get the perfect fit, take your actual waist measurement and deduct 2” (5cm) for the elastic measurement. If you do not have the actual waist measurement, use the suggested measurements below for cutting the waistband elastic. Imperial (Inches) Measurements:

Garment Construction Attaching the Skirt Band
Included seam allowance is 3/8” (1cm) unless otherwise noted.
1
With right sides together, sew bottom band to bottom of the main skirt piece. Finish edges. Repeat with opposite skirt pieces. Press seams up towards the top of the skirt.
2
With right sides together, sew side seams while matching seams where the band is attached to the main skirt piece. This will create one continuous loop. Trim and finish edges. Press seams towards back.
3
Finish the raw edge of the bottom of the skirt band.

4
Fold the bottom band wrong sides together matching the bottom edge with finished edge of seam and press. Pin in place.
5
Turn right side out. Stitch in the ditch by stitching directly in the seam line to close the band. Be careful to remove your pins as you sew.
Optional Ribbon Detail If you are not doing a ribbon or trim detail, skip to step 7. Align ribbon on top of the band seam starting at one of the side seams. Sew closely along one side of the ribbon to secure. When you reach the end, cut the remaining ribbon where it overlaps by 1/2.” Fold the end 1/4” to ensure no exposed seams, and sew back down other side of ribbon.

Creating the Waistband
7
Turn garment wrong side out. Make an elastic casing by pressing down the top of the skirt 1/4” and then again 1.5.”
8
Edgestitch 1/8” away from the edge of the fold of the casing to create the waistband leaving a 2” gap open for the elastic to be inserted.
9
Feed elastic through the casing while holding on to one end. Making sure the elastic is not twisted, overlap the ends of the elastic and sew the elastic together making a continuous loop.
Tip: It is helpful to use a tool such as a safety pin to help feed the elastic through the casing easily. Be sure to pin one end of the elastic to the outside so that you don’t accidentally lose it while you feed the elastic through.
©Bella Sunshine Designs - Isabella’s Banded Skirt - All Rights Reserved - Page 13
10
Pull the elastic completely through the casing. Sew the opening in the casing closed.
11
Even the gathers of the elastic waistband. Stitch in the ditch at the side seams of the waistband to secure the elastic on both sides.
