ABOUT IDAHO STATE
The Idaho State men’s tennis team will host the Griz of Montana for their third match of the season. The match will be on Friday, Jan. 27 at 3 p.m. in Reed Gym. The Bengals are 1-1 this season, coming off a 6-1 win over Utah State and a 5-2 loss to Weber State.
BENGAL MEN STANDOUTS
The ISU men return three players including junior Nate Gross who led the Bengals last season with a 13-6 singles record at the No. 3-No. 6 positions and senior Dan Buckingham who posted a 5-12 singles record at the 4-6 positions. ISU also welcomes Scottsdale CC transfer Charles Norman.
INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS
The Bengal men’s tennis team houses three international students, all from a different country. Junior Charles Norman from South Africa, freshman Andres Coello from Ecuador and freshman Krzyzstof Stempien from Poland.
ABOUT MONTANA
The match on Friday will be Montana’s first of the season. The Griz come into their 2012 season with a number two ranking in the conference preseason poll. They return nine players, three of which are seniors. Senior Carl Kuschke received first-team All-Big Sky Conference honors for both the 2010-11 season and the 2009-10 season. Kuschke garnered a 10-8 singles record and a 7-11 doubles record last season. Sophomore Mikolaj Caruk was also an asset to the Griz last season with a singles record of 11-7 and a doubles record of 13-5.
FRESHMEN IMPRESS IN FIRST TWO MATCHES
Two of Bobby Goeltz’s freshmen have made quite an impact in the Bengals first two matches of the season. Krzyzstof Stempien and Andres Coello are both 2-0 in singles competition so far this season. Stempien defeated Utah State’s Matt Sweet in a 3-set battle in the season opener and then went on to defeat Weber State’s Ramstromer Pello 6-4, 6-2 in Wednesday’s match. Coello defeated Utah State’s Lenny Whiting in the first match of the season 7-5, 6-2 and then defeated Weber State’s Ben Rode 12-10 in three sets.
MEN SELECTED TO FINISH 7TH IN PRESEASON POLL
The Idaho State men’s tennis team was tabbed to finish seventh in the Big Sky preseason poll released by the conference office. The men received 23 points, finishing ahead of Portland State (18) and Northern Colorado (9). The Bengals finished eighth in the conference last season with a Big Sky record of 1-7. The defending champions of Sacramento State were selected to finish first in the preseason poll.
STEMPIEN NAMED BENGAL ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
Freshman Krzyzstof Stempien was selected as the Bengal Athlete of the Week for matches played the week of Jan. 17-23. Stempien helped the Bengals win in their season opener against Utah State Tuesday, Jan. 17. Stempien, along with his teammate Austin Miller, managed to deafeat USU’s Ballam and Wearmouth in the doubles portion of the competition. The freshman from Lodz, Poland then went on to win 12-10 in his singles match at the No. 4 position against Utah State’s Matt Sweet.

GENERAL INFORMATION
Bobby Goeltz has amassed a wealth of knowledge in his 32 years of head coaching experience. He begins his 22nd season with the Bengals after previously having served 10 years in a similar capacity at the University of Maryland. His all-time career record as a head coach is 539-638 (46.0 Head Coach percent) over his 32 years. Goeltz’s all-time men’s career record is 324-332 (49.3 percent) and his women’s career Princeton - 1970 record is 215-306 (41.2 percent). He has led the Bengal men to a 176-239 (42.0 percent) record and have finished second in the Big Sky four times 22nd Season (1997, 1999, 2003, 2004) and third six times. Goeltz has had players named to the All-Conference teams 33 times; 23 first team selections, five second team selections and five honorable mentions. He has also had 26 of his men’s players named to the All-Academic team. Goeltz has had three men’s players earn Big Sky Most Valuable Player including three-time selection Mike Castrilli. Goeltz has led the Bengal women to a 134-235 record (36.3 percent) and have placed second in the Big Sky Conference three times (1991, 1992 and 1996) and third four times. He has had players named to All-Conference teams 29 times; 16 first team selections, six second team selections and seven honorable mentions. Goeltz has had 25 of his women’s players named to the All-Academic team. He has had one female player named Big Sky MVP. His athletes have been highly successful in the classroom. At ISU, every senior he coached has graduated, while only one at Maryland failed to graduate. He has had three men’s players and a women’s player named Big Scholar Athlete including one player who earned an NCAA Post Graduate Scholarship. Mark Rodel serves his second year as an assistant coach for the Bengal men’s and women’s tennis teams. He has 18 years of coaching and playing experience at the regional, national and international level. He is a certified member of the United States Professional Tennis Association (USPTA), Assistant Coach where he holds a P1 level certification. No stranger to the Bengals, Rodel served as a volunteer coach for Idaho State during the 2009-10 season. Weber State - 1997 Prior to ISU, Rodel served as a volunteer coach for Weber State during the 2007-08 season. A native of Johannesburg, South Africa, Rodel attended Weber State on scholarship where 2nd Season he continued to develop as a player and ended playing at both the No. 1 and No. 2 singles positions as well as the No. 1 doubles spot. In 1997 Rodel was named team captain and earned Big Sky Conference tennis and academic honors. Rodel has owned and operated Peak Tennis Training since 2007, where he specializes in creating custom and comprehensive tennis training programs for aspiring tennis players. Peak tennis training was developed as a result of Rodel reaching the elite levels of road cycling culminating in his participation in two US National Championships. The utilization of the core principles of training and periodization have been incorporated into Coach Rodel’s tennis coaching philosophy. He served as the Junior Tennis Director at the Eagleridge Tennis Club in Salt Lake City, Utah from 2008-09. He served as a Tennis Pro at the Tokeneke Club in Darien, Connecticut from 1995-98. Rodel is also active within the United States Tennis Association (USTA), and in 2009 and 2010 he served as a coach for the 14 and 12 and under boys’ and girls’ Intermountain Zonal Teams respectively. In addition, Rodel has over nine years of business related experience. Rodel earned his bachelor’s degree from Weber State University in 1997 and an MBA in Global Management from the University of Phoenix in 2000. Rodel is currently pursuing a Masters of Counseling degree from Idaho State in order to gain a more holistic approach to working with students and athletes. He plans on completing the degree in the spring of 2011. He is married to Valerie (Sorenson) Rodel and has two kids Luke (6) and Kate (4). His wife Valerie played women’s basketball at Weber State from 1992-96 and coached at Salt Lake Community College for 12 years from 1997-2009.
