[email protected] 29 March,2006 Peter; I did some research on the Quebec Whitlock line that we corresponded on earlier this month. I'm enclosing some extracts of data which should help fill in some holes, & expand your database a bit. There's an 1881 Canadian census extract for the Mathison family in Quebec that includes Harriet (Vanderburgh) Mathison, Anna (Mathison) Whitlock, & a couple of other Mathisons. It has their ages, so you should be able to calculate some birth dates which are missing from the database you sent. For some reason the 1881 census didn't produce any evidence of other family lines like the Bulgers, Kytes (or Kyle), or Hempsteds. The earliest indication that I could find of the Bulger family in Ontario is 1887, when the Ontario Birth Index records a Birth registration for Cory Duncan Bulger b. 23 May 1887 in Toronto (MS929, MFR 86, Reg# 042586/87), followed by Violet Muriel Bulger b. 30 May 1889 in Toronto (MS929 MFR 97, Reg # 044644/89), George Maitland Bulger b. 13 May 1891 in Toronto (MS929 MFR 103 Reg# 002976/91), Robert James Bulger b. 10 Mar 1893 in Toronto (MS929, MFR 119 ,Reg# 040849/93), Verona Bulger b. 22 Apr 1895 in Brunei (Tp., Muskoka) (MS929 MFR 127 Reg# 019943/95), & Walter Andrew Bulger b. 27 June 1904 in Brunei (MS929 MFR 169 Reg# 027982/04). Brunei Tp. in Muskoka was amalgamated into the town of Huntsville in 1971. I enclose an extract of the 1901 Canadian census that has the Bulgers in Brunei Tp. The children's birth dates corresRond pretty well with the ones given above. If you take the census at face value, Amy Bulger was a mother at age 15, but I notice your database has Emeric Bulger married twice. His first wife appears to have been a Mathison & she died in 1884. I presume this means that any children born before 1884 were from the first marriage. I think that 1860 birthdate for Amy Bulger may be correct, since it shows up in the 1911 census as well. I don't have any independent confirmation for any of this; I presume it all took place in Quebec, since none of it shows up in the Ontario death & marriage indices. The 1911 census has them in Saskatchewan. I enclose an extract from the National Archives Western Land Grant site that indicates various Bulger family members acquired land in Saskatchewan. It doesn't include dates, but you can order microfilm reels which have images of the original documents by interlibrary loan from the National Archives. They would provide you with precise dates. Anyway, we know that they moved sometime between 1904 & 1911. There's a 1906 census for the Western provinces, but it's not completely indexed yet. The Bulgers don't show up on it, but that's inconclusive. I checked the Saskatchewan Vital Statistics site, but came up with no births. They still haven't uploaded death or marriage indices. There's no indication in the WW1 database that any of the Bulger boys were inducted or enlisted into the Canadian army. There's also no results from the BC Vital Statistics site (at least no names I recognized).
