JACK TRICE

Jack Trice, Iowa State’s first black student-athlete, was the first athlete to die from an injury sustained in competition. Trice died on October 8, 1923, from injuries suffered during a game versus Minnesota. A letter written by Trice to himself on the eve of the Minnesota game was found in his coat pocket the day of his funeral. The contents of the letter were divulged to the 4,000 students and faculty members attending his funeral service held on central campus. The letter read, “My thoughts just before the first real college game of my life: The honor of my race, family and self is at stake. Everyone is expecting me to do big things. I will. My whole body and soul are to be thrown recklessly about the field. Every time the ball is snapped, I will be trying to do more than my part. Fight low, with your eyes open and toward the play. Watch out for crossbucks and reverse end runs. Be on your toes every minute if you expect to make good. Jack.” In 2008, ISU Athletics renamed the club section “Jack Trice Club” to honor his legacy.
