[email protected] HOW TO REACH US EWGA Dayton Chapter P.O. Box 340393 Dayton, Ohio 45434-0393 ewgadayton.org
January 2007 HAPPY NEW YEAR TO EVERYONE! I hope all of you had a lovely holiday season and are managing to keep warm during our current frigid temperatures. I was fortunate enough to spend a few days in Florida playing golf in January, so I am (mentally, at least) ready for spring and EWGA golf events. The 2007 Board has been meeting regularly, and is focused on strengthening our Dayton Chapter through attracting and retaining membership. We have already participated in one recruiting event opportunity (a Health Fair at Centerville High School), and have several others planned. The kick-off is only a month away, so NOW is the time to move into high gear on recruiting. Please talk with your friends who have an interest in golf -- those who may have been members in the past, and those who are just learning about EWGA. A shared goal for all of us this year is to be more inviting and friendly to newcomers -- to get out of our own comfort zones by welcoming and including those attending their first kick-off, golf event, or league play. As we all know, it can be a little intimidating if you feel you're out there all alone. Your Board members have already spent considerable time preparing for the upcoming season, as you will hear at the kick-off. Sponsorship, Leadership, Leagues, Golf and Social Events, Membership and Handicaps have all made significant strides toward making 2007 a very successful year for the Dayton Chapter. While we already have great committees supporting most of these Chair positions, we invite all of you who have an interest in helping to contact the Chair of your chosen committee to volunteer to help. The more energized, enthusiastic members we have working to achieve our goals, the more our decisions and activities will reflect the desires and needs of our total membership. So, get involved. This is YOUR organization -- influence it in ways that make it valuable and meaningful for you. The kick off has intentionally been scheduled on a Sunday afternoon this year (March 4 atTHE Walnut Grove -MISSION see the sign up info in this EWGA newsletter) so it can be a more relaxed, leisurely event. Plan to come so you can learn about the Dayton Chapter's plans for 2007 while you reconnect with current friends and make new ones. I look forward to seeing you there!
Nancy Brady (President) The Executive Women's Golf Association (EWGA) is a not-for-profit organization established in 1991 to provide opportunities for women to learn, play, and enjoy the game of golf for business and for life.

March 4th at Walnut Grove Country Club, 1-4 p.m. Lunch will be served at 1:15. Your invitations will be in the mail soon with a return card for reservations. Cost is $18.00. ***GAME NIGHT: THE LOWDOWN ON THE FIRST SOCIAL EVENT OF 2007*** On a chilly night in January warmed by the embers from the beautiful stone fireplace a good time was had by all. For those of you who do not know, you may ask Glenda what state Alabama is in. You had to be there!!! Two new members were added to our roster with a third on the way. Thanks to members Susan Hogan and Mary Jo Wiley. Karen Puthoff walked away with a smashing 50/50 pot and the clean up crew finished by midnight. A special thank you goes out to Cathy Vance for providing the accommodating facility at Kingswood Forest Condos. See photos at www.ewgadayton.org

Volunteer Opportunities Our Chapter Needs Volunteers for 2007! Your EWGA Dayton Chapter is looking for people to become more involved in the leadership & direction of the chapter. We currently are looking for volunteers to assist in the following areas: •
Sally Doran, Sponsorship Chair, has an extensive background in advertising and brings a lot of great energy and enthusiasm to her position. Sally has already been busy, updating our sponsorship brochure and coming up with new ways to market EWGA to potential sponsors. Sally needs your help in securing solid sponsorship leads. If you have a lead for Sally, please email the information to her at
[email protected].
•
Sharon Henderson, Events Chair, and Mary Klunk, Education Chair, need assistance at Golf and Education events. Volunteer opportunities include: manning registration tables, filling “goodie bags” and selling 50/50 raffle tickets.
•
Kathy Duffy, Membership Chair, is seeking volunteers to distribute Marketing posters and information to local businesses. We would like volunteers from various regions of the Greater Dayton Area to help spread the word about the Dayton EWGA. In addition, volunteers are needed to contact and welcome new members and reach out to former members.
•
Marian Glancy, Communications Chair, has reinstated the paper newsletter and we are getting a terrific response, but this task requires printing, copying, folding, labeling & postage. We are seeking volunteers willing to assist Marian in these tasks.
•
Mary Rice, Handicap Chair, needs assistance with handicap education and implementation. She will need someone experienced in the Golf Life Management System with a working knowledge of equitable stroke control (ESC) and its application.
•
Barb Patrick, Social Chair, is always looking for fun people to assist in organizing and manning social events. Although, the Kick-off and Year-end Event are her two biggest events, the others don’t organize themselves! Come on ladies, what could be more fun than this?
•
Renee Ryan, League Chair, is making new strides in standardizing the organization of the various leagues. Anyone interested in serving as a League Captain, or Co-Captain? We are always in the market for new leadership in the various leagues. Experience is not necessary. Renee will provide you with the tools and information you need.
•
Our Golf Mentoring program is seeking experienced individuals who are willing to play golf with our new and beginner golfers on the course, teaching golf etiquette, pace of play, etc.
•
Roya Vary, Leadership Chair, is seeking individuals who want to get involved! Anyway, anywhere, anytime. If you don’t see the right volunteer position for you, but you want to give back to your EWGA chapter she will help to find the right way to utilize your particular skills.

Golf Tips and Etiquette Mary Klunk As chair of the education committee, I will be pulling golf tips and etiquette reminders from several books that I have found helpful over the years. February has arrived and so have the early thoughts of dusting off the clubs and hitting the practice tees. For the really obsessed among us try out the heated driving ranges around town. The first installment of Golf tips and Etiquette comes from a very practical book called The Golf Instruction Manual by Steve Newell. From his chapter, Assessing and Improving Your Game he offers several drills and one that I find particularly helpful.
Drill 1: Use your practice time effectively It is a common sight . . . . . every day at the driving range keen golfers who are determined to hit the ball as hard as possible but give little thought to technique. Although there is nothing wrong with hitting drivers at the range, there has to be structure and discipline to the procedure, otherwise you might do your swing more harm than good. This drill will give real purpose to your driving practice. 1. Identify a specific target; if you are focused on where you want the ball to go, you will make a more focused swing. 2. Lay one club to the right of a ball, pointing directly at the target. Then lay another club parallel to the first, along the line of your toes. This will ensure that every time you address a ball you are in perfect parallel alignment. 3. Treat each practice shot as if it is a shot on the course. In other words, every shot has a purpose!!
Quality not quantity is what good practice is all about. Most golfers would benefit from hitting half as many balls with twice the application to each one. The old saying “practice makes perfect” is only partly true; “perfect practice makes perfect” is more like it. Good luck and start practicing
