Elm Avenue Baptist Church of Grand Junction is happy to announce their third Seminar on Biblical Evangelism and also the spring business meeting for the Spurgeon Baptist Association on April 24-27, 2014. Our keynote speaker will be Bro. Randall Easter from First Baptist Church of Briar in Azle, Texas. Our theme will be Recovering the Gospel: Evangelism in Sardis. Our theme verse will be Revelation 3:3. The goal of this conference is to encourage pastors and laymen who are serving in churches where the Gospel has been neglected in the past and are now trying to recover true Gospel preaching and practice. Come learn with us and encourage others who stand with us. We will be posting more details as the time gets closer. Pastor Paul Walker

It is a blessed thing to declare the gospel, but I do not believe that any man can preach the gospel who does not preach the law. The book of Leviticus and all the other typical books, are valuable as gospel-teaching to us, because there is always in them most clearly the law of God. The law is the needle, and you cannot draw the silken thread of the gospel through a man's heart, unless you first send the needle of the law through the centre thereof, to make way for it. If men do not understand the law, they will not feel that they are sinners, and if they are not consciously sinners, they will never value the sinoffering. If the Ten Commandments are never read in their hearing, they will not know wherein they are guilty and how shall they make confession? If they are not assured that the law is 'holy, and just, and good', and that God has never demanded of any man more than he has a right to demand, how shall they feel the filthiness of sin, or see the (Continued on page 2)

need of flying to Christ for cleansing? There is no healing a man till the law has wounded him, no making him alive till the law has slain him. I do pray, dear friends, that God, the Holy Spirit, may lay the law, like an axe, at the root of all our self-righteousness, for nothing else will ever hew down that upas tree. I pray that he may take the law, and use it as a looking-glass, that we may see ourselves in it, and discover our spots and blots, and all the foulness of our lives, for then we shall be driven to wash until we are clean in the sight of the Lord. The law is our pedagogue 'to bring us unto Christ,' and there is no coming to Christ unless the stern pedagogue shall lead us there, with many a stripe and many a tear. FOR MEDITATION: Teachers who neglect the preaching of the law deprive themselves and their hearers of a tool which reveals sin (Romans 3:2o; 7:7), condemns the sinner (Galatians 3:10) and points the sinner to the Lord Jesus Christ (Galatians 3:24). What a valuable resource it is!

Preaching of the Word of God “I have felt shame, sorrow, and contempt, all blended, at some things I have heard from the pulpit. They are nice enough little things, but nothing from the Word of God, nothing to convict a sinner, nothing to lead a sinner to Christ, nothing to lead a babe in Christ to maturity in Christian knowledge, nothing to develop high, holy, and enduring Christian character. Preaching is a solemn work.” B. H. Carroll Of David Livingston it was said: “He did not rove about as a political missionary, consuming his time in the discussion of questions relating to the public affairs, interesting as the subject then was to persons of every description. Though a decided Whig; though he rejoiced at every occurrence auspicious to the cause of freedom, and both in public and in private remembered his beloved country at the throne of grace, praying that the right hand of the Almighty and the light of his countenance would save her, yet he loved the cause of Christ more; and he, therefore, assiduously employed himself in the glorious service to which he had been called. His prudence, his just sense of the dignity of his office, and of the solemn nature of its duties, were such as could hardly fail to preserve him from any unseemly remarks in ordinary discourse upon political matters.”

The Spurgeon Baptist Association of Churches is an association of Southern Baptist Churches that is united to manifest the glory of God above all. We set out to do this by seeking spiritual awakening and revival by intense prayer and earnest obedience to Scripture. As an association of churches we are bound in mutual covenant to strengthen and support one another- motivated and guided by the authority and sufficiency of Scripture - by facilitating faithful preaching of the Word of God, proclaiming the gospel of the risen Lord Jesus Christ to all, making and gathering disciples, planting churches and coordinating unified missions efforts. We are a non-geographic association seeking to include any likeminded body of believers so that together we might better fulfill the great commission of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Our intent is to lean on His instruction and not our imaginations so that He is honored in all that we do. We welcome churches who adhere to the confessions of faith accepted by Southern Baptists throughout their history, including, but not limited to, the Second London Confession (1689) and the Baptist Faith and Message.
