GSC PLAYER OF THE WEEK AWARDS (12/26 - 1/1) PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Jarad Scott, Union

Scott led the Bulldogs to a 72-71 win over Delta State, sinking the game-winning free throw with just two seconds showing on the clock. He had a team-high 28 points and 12 rebounds, while adding three assists and a pair of blocked shots. The 6-8 senior was efficient from the floor, going 10-for-13 from the field and 6-for-7 from beyond the arc. Scott is shooting a remarkable 59.5% from three-point range this season, best in the GSC, and it would be the best in country, but he falls just short of the minimum. Scott ranks second in the league in field goal percentage at 64.4%.

FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK: Mitch Mays, Christian Brothers

For the fourth time in seven weeks, Christian Brothers claims the GSC’s Freshman of the Week honor, as Mays earns the award after a double-double in another victory for the first place Buccaneers. Mays had 14 points and a career-high 11 rebounds in the CBU win over Mississippi College on New Year’s Eve. Mays also had a pair of assists and no turnovers in 36 minutes on the floor. It was the first double-double of Mays’ career. Three different Buccaneers have been named GSC Freshman of the Week this season.

GSC Men’s Basketball Weekly Release

No conference team is unbeaten through six contests after Christian Brothers and West Georgia suffered losses this week. Only three teams have less than two losses. Christian Brothers fell to Delta State by a single point on a last second put-back dunk by the Statesmen, who were coming off of a one-point loss to Union. Meanwhile, West Georgia was in a shootout with Shorter, but the Wolves’ bid to stay unbeaten came up just short, falling 104-100. Stephaun Branch had 45 points in the loss, the first 40-point game for UWG since 2006. Phil Taylor, the country’s leading scorer, had 48 points for the Hawks. It is the third time this season that Taylor has scored at least 48 points. In GSC history, Taylor had the most, second most, and is tied for sixth most points in a single game. The GSC single season record for points scored is 861, set by Delta State’s Gerald Glass is 1986-87. Through 10 games, Taylor has 375 points. The GSC single season record for average points per game is 28.7, set by West Georgia’s Anthony Barge in 1986-87. As of now, Taylor averages 37.5 points per game.
