“There is no substitute for hard work.” Jared Pitts
Former Stephen F. Austin Lumberjack outfielder Jared Pitts was selected by the Houston Astros in the 28th round and the 861st overall pick of the 2007 MLB draft. Though his time at SFA was brief, Pitts proved to be a vital member of the baseball team after the program’s initial return in 2006. The Friendswood, Texas, native, closed his one-year career earning third team AllSouthland Conference honors after a standout junior season. Pitts, a transfer from Angelina College, helped bolster an offensive lineup that also included 13th round selection Steven Hill in 2007. The strong-armed right fielder finished the year among the Southland Conference’s leaders in home runs with 11. Pitts appeared and started in all 58 games in 2007, recording a .306 batting average, .508 slugging percentage and a .402 on-base percentage. Pitts finished with 68 hits in 222 at bats, while amassing 10 double and a triple along with his 11 home runs. Pitts drove in 48 runs and scored 41 runs of his own, while successfully swiping in six stolen bases.
