Jeremiah 1

The word of the Lord came to me, saying “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart; I appointed you as a prophet to the nations.” “Alas, Sovereign Lord,” I said, “I do not know how to speak; I am too young.” But the Lord said to me, “Do not say, ‘I am too young.’ You must go to everyone I send you to and say whatever I command you. Do not be afraid of them, for I am with you and will rescue you,” declares the Lord. Then the Lord reached out His hand and touched my mouth and said to me, “I have put my words in your mouth. See, today I appoint you over nations and kingdoms to uproot and tear down, to destroy and overthrow, to build and to plant.” 1:4-10 “. . .You will be My spokesman.” 15:19

Lesson Two

JEREMIAH IS APPOINTED

The   transformation   from   plain   person   to   prophet:   it’s   God’s   call,   and   it’s   personal. My words in your mouth”) and to knowledge of you; interaction Lessons   and   Questions God is the One who proclaims to us who we are. He knows us, creates us intentionally, and sets us apart to do whatever He has in mind for our individual lives. When, in v5, He speaks to Jeremiah, it is in the past tense! Question: According to God, who are you? What is your call? To what task have you been set apart? Humanity tends toward excuses. Adam did it in Genesis 3; Moses did it in Exodus 3 and 4; Aaron did it in Exodus 32; Jeremiah does it in verse 6; and Gideon did it in Judges 6. What excuses are you offering God in order to disobey His call on your life? We tend to depend on ourselves rather than God, who promises His Presence (v8), His provision (v9, “Now, I have put

His rescue (v8). Rather than look to ourselves for the needed authority (7-10), we need to cultivate the habit of looking to God to create, maintain, and conclude His call and work in our lives. How are you trying to muster up everything you need to do God’s work? In what ways are you trying too hard, and need to believe God’s promise to provide for you? God’s authority, transferred to you for His Kingdom purposes, carries weight. Practice doing what He asks of you with His authority. I assure you, He will give you opportunities to work out your call! Be faithful. Forgive yourself and try again when you fail. Notice: God’s call is personal. God’s call is attached

with you; assurance for you; and provision for you. We know this because God spoke with Jeremiah; He informed him; He encouraged him; He touched him; He directed him; He commanded him. But He did not baby him or let him whine or change His mind! He is LORD and expects obedience! Do you need a personal interaction with God? Don’t we all? Make space in your life to listen to Him today. “Jesus, I invite you to interact with me now. I would love to hear Your voice and experience a clear call as Jeremiah did. You know me. You have called me to good Kingdom works; show me what they are and empower me to complete them, without fear (v8) and faithfully (v10). Amen.”
