LESSON AIM: The aim of this lesson is to believe and understand that Jesus is our Savior.
B E LO NG in G od ’ s family: _____________________________________________________ CHECK IN: (optional) Let’s briefly share with each other how we’ve been doing this week. OPENING PRAYER ICEBREAKER: When you were a child, what were your beliefs about Heaven? At what point did you realize that you would have to make a choice about where to spend eternity?
B E C O M E like Je sus: _____________________________________________________ 1. Sunday’s message focused on our need for a Savior and God’s provision through the sacrifice of Jesus’ suffering, death and burial. How did God speak to you through this message? 2. Many individuals and religions believe that people can go to Heaven by being “good.” Do we really need a Savior? In the first message in this series, we talked about the need for an absolute standard. What would Heaven be like if we each got there based upon our own idea of “good?” See Isaiah 64:6. 3. We know from history that crucifixion is probably the most painful means of death. From these Scriptures, discuss some of the ways Jesus suffered: Isaiah 52:14 and Matthew 26:56, 27:46. What was the purpose of His suffering? See 2 Corinthians 5:21.
4. Could Jesus have saved us without dying? See Romans 6:23 and Hebrews 9:22. What happened when the leaders of the other “great religions” died? What does this tell us about the significance Jesus’ of death? 5. Now let’s look at Jesus’ burial. Read Isaiah 53:3-9 and discuss the contrast between His death and His burial. Then continue with the story in Matthew 27:62–28:10. What was man’s purpose for the stone? What was God’s purpose? When does God take something meant for bad, and use it for His good purpose?
BL ES S o th er s : _____________________________________________________ Some notable Christians have begun their faith journey by trying to disprove the Bible’s claims about Jesus – and instead become convinced of their truth. How does a deep understanding of Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross strengthen your faith?
BUI L D G o d ’s k i n g d o m : _____________________________________________________ Let’s review what Peter does in John 18:18-26. Have you ever responded like Peter? Now go to 1 Peter 3:15. How would this help you be prepared to point others to Jesus?
BEL I EV E G o d a n d a c t i n fa i t h : _____________________________________________________ Like the women in Mark 16:3 who worried about how they would get past the huge stone into the tomb, do you ever worry about things over which God has control? How can the reality of Jesus’ suffering, death, and burial give you renewed hope for your life struggles? PRAYER: What challenge are you facing this week? How can our group pray and support you?
