Prepare to offer one or more of the following activities as your preschoolers arrive. Let one or two teachers lead small groups of children in activities throughout the room while another teacher greets parents and kids at the door.

• Come Back • Count the Boo-Boos • Morning and Night

MAKE IT TRUE (LARGE GROUP) • Worship • Introductory Sketch • Bible Story

MAKE IT STICK

These activities are designed to help preschoolers understand and remember today’s Bible story and Bottom Line. Offer as many of the following activities as your time, facilities, resources, and leadership allow. You may want to lead one activity at a time. Or, offer two activities at once and allow half the kids to participate in each, then switch groups and repeat the activities.

MAKE IT REAL

Make It Real is designed to help preschoolers understand how the Bottom Line applies to them. They’ll discuss real-life experiences and share prayer requests. Divide kids into small groups of about five to eight children with each leader. Ideally, assign the same small group leader to the same group of preschoolers for the entire year.

COME BACK

“Come Back” is an activity that helps the children visualize a key concept in today’s Bible story. WHAT YOU NEED: Medium-sized ball and a wall (Note: If you do not have a wall in your space, you can use a table turned on its side instead.) WHAT YOU DO: Before the Activity: Have the children stand in a straight line in front of the wall. During the Activity: Give the first child in line the ball and ask him to roll it against the wall. Encourage the child to catch the ball when it bounces back. After the Activity: Continue with the activity until each child in line has had a turn.

JESUS IS THERE WHEN I NEED HIM.

WHAT YOU SAY: Before the Activity: “We are going to roll the ball against the wall. What do you think it will do when it hits the wall? (Pause.) Yes! It will come back!”

MEMORY VERSE

During the Activity: “When the ball comes back, catch it, and give it to the next person in line so they can have a turn. Are you ready? (Pause.) Here we go!”

“You are everything I need.” Psalm 119:57, NIrV

After the Activity: “Great job catching the ball when it came back! In our Bible story today, we are going to hear about some people who came back too! I cannot wait to find out where they went! Are you ready to hear a TRUE story from the Bible?”

WHAT YOU NEED: “Count My Boo-Boos” Activity Page, white cardstock, and red pom-poms WHAT YOU DO: Before the Activity: Copy “Count My Boo-Boos” onto the white cardstock. Place the red pom-poms in the center of the tables. During the Activity: Hand out an Activity Page to each child participating in the activity. Point out each of the men and count the boo-boos together. Encourage the children to place a red pom-pom on each of the boo-boos and count them again. WHAT YOU SAY: During the Activity: “Take a look at the men on your page. It looks like they have some boo-boos. Let’s count their boo-boos together. (Point to each man and count together.) Now let’s place some red pom-poms to show their boo-boos and count them again.” After the Activity: “Great job counting the boo-boos! In our Bible story today, we’ll hear about some men who had some really painful boo-boos. But I think there is someone who can help them! You’ll find out soon!”

INVESTIGATION/ROLE PLAY An activity that channels either a preschooler’s innate curiosity or desire to play dress up into a discussion of concepts crucial to the lesson.

MORNING AND NIGHT

“Morning and Night” is an activity that opens up conversation between the SGL and the children about the monthly theme. WHAT YOU NEED: “Morning and Night” Activity Page, white paper, wall tape, large piece of butcher paper, scissors, and a black marker WHAT YOU DO: Before the Activity: Copy the “Morning and Night” Activity Page onto the white paper. Cut the page in half along the dotted line. Hang the butcher paper vertically on a wall. Draw a line down the middle of the butcher paper, dividing it into two equal parts. Tape the picture of the sun on the top of one side of the butcher paper and the picture of the moon and stars on the top of the other side. During the Activity: Have the children sit in front of the butcher paper. Ask the children to name things that they do during the day, like play outside, go to school, etc. As the children answer, write the answers down in the column under the picture of the sun. Next, ask the children to name things they do at night, such as put on pajamas, sleep, etc. Write these answers under the picture of the moon and stars. Review the answers in each column. WHAT YOU SAY: Before the Activity: “We are talking about TIME this month! I love that Jesus is there when I need Him ALL THE TIME!” During the Activity: “I have a chart here that has a picture of daytime (point to sun) and a picture of nighttime (point to picture of moon and stars). Let’s talk about daytime first. Can you tell me some of the things that you do during the day? (Write answers.) Great answers! Can you tell me some things that you do at nighttime? (Write answers.) That is right! We do different things at different times of the day.” (Review answers.) After the Activity: “No matter what time it is, Jesus is always there when we need Him—all the time! Today in our Bible story, there are people who REALLY need Jesus’ help. Let’s get ready to find out how Jesus helped them!”

WHAT YOU DO: During the Activity: Place a red dot sticker on each child’s hand as their “booboo.” Say the memory verse together to review. Then go around the circle and have the children take turns saying the verse. When each child finishes, give him a BAND-AID to cover up the boo-boo. WHAT YOU SAY: During the Activity: “Our memory verse this month is Psalm 119:57 and it says: You are everything I need. We’ve talked about what a need is. A need is something that’s necessary to live, like water. In our Bible story today, what did the men with boo-boos need? (Pause.) Yes, they needed someone to help make them better. And Jesus did make them better! “I have some red dots for you. These will be your ‘boo-boos.’ When you say the verse, I’ll give you a BAND-AID to cover up your boo-boo. Let’s say our verse together again. You are everything I need, Psalm 119.57.” After the Activity: “Great job, everyone! Jesus helped the men in our Bible story today. He gave them exactly what they needed by healing their boo-boos. And Jesus will always help us and give us what we need too. He is always there when I need Him. Who is there when you need Him? WHAT YOU SAY: Before the Activity: “The men in our story today were very sick! They had sores on their bodies just like this (put a red dot on your arm). Can you help me put more dots on my arms, so I can tell you the story?” (Pause.) During the Activity: “Thank you for your help. Now you can sit down. Our story today was about many men who had a problem. They were sick! They had sores on their bodies and they had to leave their homes and families so no one else would get sick. Poor men! They needed help. Do you remember who helped them? (Pause.) You got it! Jesus helped them! (Begin taking off the stickers.) Jesus healed the men and they got to go back to their families!” (Finish removing stickers.) After the Activity: “Jesus helped the men when they needed Him by healing them. WHAT YOU DO: Before the Activity: Use the tape to hang the butcher paper on the wall in an open area of the room at a child’s eye level. Write the following questions on the butcher paper. Make sure to leave enough space below each question for the children’s answers. What is your favorite color? What is your favorite food? What is your favorite toy? Who is in your family? Who in your family helps you? Who is there when you need Him? During the Activity: Ask the children the questions on the butcher paper and record their answers below each question. As you lead the children through the questions, the goal is to get to the last one, so you can talk about this month’s Bottom Line. Make sure every child has a chance to answer. WHAT YOU SAY: During the Activity: “Look at my paper. Do you see these words? (Point.) They are questions that I want to ask you! I’ll read the question out loud and then I’ll call on you to answer. Are you ready?” After the Activity: “This was fun! I learned some new things about each of you from the questions we asked today. But the most important question is the one at the bottom. It’s the question we’ve been asking all month long. Who is there when you need Him? That’s right. You can always count on Jesus to be there for you—all the time! Jesus is there when I need Him.”
