Synagogue

A synagogue traditionally is the house of prayer for the Jewish people. Often though it serves as the hub of the communal life of a particular area. Prayers are held daily with Shabbat prayers bringing out the entire community. The first impression of any Jewish community are its synagogues. It has been taught: Abba Binyamin says: A man’s prayer is heard [by God] only in the synagogue. For it is said: “To listen to the song and to the prayer” (I Melakhim 8:28).” The prayer is to be recited where there is song. Ravin ben R’ Adda says in the name of R’ Yitzchak: How do you know that the Holy One, blessed be He, is to be found in the synagogue? For it is said: “God stands in the Divine assembly” (Tehillim 82:1). (Brachos 6a)

‫מקוה‬

Mikveh

A ritual bath used to immerse to ritually purify oneself. This is what should be done in every city: They should take upon themselves to invest the greatest efforts to install in their city a pure mikvah with warm water, so that every person - even those who are weak - will be able to consistently immerse themselves in the pure waters of the mikveh. And don’t say that is is something new, because there have already been many holy communities over time that have tried to build a mikveh and were successful. The outcome of their efforts was great and their lots are praiseworthy, because the merit of the public is dependent on them, and those who assist the public in becoming righteous are compared to stars which last forever. (Yesod VeShoresh HaAvodah Shaar HaKollel Chapter 9)

Cemetery

Burying the dead and maintaining the respect of those who have passed on is integral to any Jewish community. There are special laws regarding the proper way to bury the dead. Typically, special emphasis is placed on gathering by the gravesite of the deceased on the anniversary of their death to recite a special prayer followed by the Kaddish. One who sees Jewish graves says, “Blessed is He who created you with judgement and gathered you [i.e. killed you] with judgement, and in the future will make you rise back up [from the dead] with judgement... and He knows the number of all of you, and in the future, He will bring you back to life and sustain you. Blessed is He who resurrects the dead.” (Talmud Brachos 58b)

‫בית ספר‬

Jewish School

A Jewish school teaches not only general studies, but Judaic studies as well. Emphasis is placed on teaching fluency in reading Hebrew, familiarity with some of the basic Jewish texts, and a stylistic understanding of the approach to learning Talmud. If not for Yehoshua ben Gamla, the Torah would have been forgotten from the Jewish people. Initially, whoever had a father would have his father teach him Torah, and whoever did not have a father would not learn Torah at all...

‫ויהושע בן גמלא שמו שאלמלא‬... ‫הוא נשתכח תורה מישראל‬ ‫שבתחלה מי שיש לו אב מלמדו‬ ‫תורה מי שאין לו אב לא היה למד‬ When the Sages saw that not everyone was capable of teaching ‫ התקינו שיהו מושיבין‬...‫תורה‬ their children and Torah study was declining, they instituted ...‫מלמדי תינוקות בירושלים‬ an ordinance that teachers of children should be established in Jerusalem.... But still, whoever had a father, his father ascended ‫ועדיין מי שיש לו אב היה מעלו‬ with him to Jerusalem and had him taught, but whoever did not ‫ומלמדו מי שאין לו אב לא היה‬ have a father, he did not ascend and learn. Therefore, the Sages ‫מושיבין‬ ‫עולה ולמד התקינו שיהו‬ instituted an ordinance that teachers of children should be ‫כבן‬ ‫אותן‬ ‫בכל פלך ופלך ומכניסין‬ established in one city in each and every region. And they brought the students in at the age of 16 and 17. (Bava Basra 21a) )‫ט”ז כבן י”ז (בבא בתרא כא א‬

Court of Law

A Rabinical court that is tasked with judging monetary disputes between two Jewish parties, based on Jewish law. ‫ על שלושה דברים העולם‬,‫רבן שמעון בן גמליאל אומר‬ Raban Shimon ben Gamliel says: The world is maintained on ‫ על הדין ועל האמת ועל השלום (משנה אבות א‬:‫קיים‬ 3 things: Justice, truth, and peace. ‫גמ׳׳ח‬

Gemach

A central focus of any Jewish community, a gemach is any organization dedicated to helping others in needs. Gemachs include interest free loans, volunteer ambulance services, medical needs, among many other services. Most gemachs are volunteer organizations. Shimon HaTzaddik was from the remnants of the Great Assembly. He used to say: The world stands on 3 things: on Torah, on service of God, and on acts of kindness. (Pirkei Avos 1:2)

The Vilna Gaon explains that throughout history we have changed the way we learn Torah. Initially, we had prophets and learned directly from the Written Torah, but now we longer have prophets. We also changed the way we perform avodah. Initially we brought sacrifices in the Beis HaMikdash, but afterwards we were left solely with davening. The only pillar which remained constant throughout Jewish history is the pillar of chessed. Chessed remained a constant because it is the direct connection with G-dliness. With Torah, we can experience G-d’s perspective and thoughts. Within prayer (avodah) we communicate with G-d. Only chessed allows us to emulate G-d Himself.

Kosher Supermarket

A staple of any observant Jewish community, kosher food is a must. Kosher food must be certified to by an agency that oversaw its production to ensure that all the ingredients and utensils that were used were kosher. The largest and most recognized certifying agency in the world is the Orthodox Union. One of my fondest and most vivid childhood memories is of watching my mother lovingly prepare food for our family. Although I certainly enjoyed the result, it was my awareness of her efforts in the preparation that made my mother’s food so special. This love and affection in the Jewish home and its role in transmitting traditions from one generation to the next have nurtured the Jewish experience throughout the centuries. The special quality of the Jewish home is, in fact, highlighted by our Sages, for whom it resonated with sanctity. As far back as the tent of our matriarch, Sarah, our tradition expresses the idea of the home’s sanctity. Sarah’s tent, the Midrash tells us, was endowed with three wondrous qualities: The Shabbat candles miraculously remained lit from one Shabbat to the next; the challah she prepared expanded far out of proportion to the ingredients she used to make it; and a cloud of purity continuously hovered above the tent in which she lived with Abraham... The distinguishing features of Sarah’s home reflected the fact that the Jewish home - and particularly the Jewish kitchen - is anything but mundane. On the contrary, when we bake challah, prepare meals, or say a blessing over wine, we are bringing forth a spiritual component latent in our physical world; and in the process we are sanctifying it. Food has always brought Jewish communities and families together. From our unique religious legacy many culinary customs and cultural delicacies have emerged, creating a veritable smorgasbord of Jewish experiences. The traditional gastronomic delights associated with Shabbat and each of the holidays have served in their own way to bind the Jewish community together and to preserve our heritage. The traditions of Ashkenazic and Sephardic Jewry yield a rich cuisine, which is itself a repository of Jewish culture. Mohel

When a baby boy turns eight days old, he is circumcised and his foreskin is removed. The circumcision is considered a covenant with G-d and is one of the most important practices in Judaism. So great is the mitzva of circumcision that it is equal to all the mitzvot of the Torah, as it is stated at the giving of the Torah: “For according to these words I have made a covenant with you and with Israel” (Exodus 34:27). “Covenant” here refers to circumcision. Additionally, so great is the mitzva of circumcision that if not for circumcision, Heaven and Earth would not have been established, as it is stated: “If not for My covenant day and night, I would not have set up the ordinances of Heaven and Earth” (Jeremiah 33:25). The covenant that exists day and night is the covenant of circumcision, as it is always found on the person’s body. (Talmud Nedarim 32a)
