JMJ June 12, 2015 8th Grade Literature Miss Blanchard Summer Reading Assignment Dear Students and Parents, Welcome to Literature class! I very much enjoyed teaching you this past year in 7th grade literature. I am so pleased to have another opportunity to share with you more great authors, poets, and playwrights. To prepare for our year together all students will read The Call of the Wild, by Jack London. In the pages that follow there are sets vocabulary, active reading worksheets, and comprehension questions for the chapters. Please look at each section carefully for directions. The work that you do for The Call of the Wild will form the basis of our first weeks of classes. We will have a comprehension test which will include vocabulary, author and background information as well as plot and analysis questions. The first week will be review and discussion of your work and the reading of the novel. All written work will be turned in the first day of school and will be graded and entered as part of your first quarter marks. In addition, from the list below, choose a second novel to read. Then choose one of the options listed as your report format on the novel you chose. I hope that you have an enjoyable summer full of rest and relaxation, but also keeping your minds working! Report Format choices: 1. Write a diary as the main character would write to explain the events in the story. Must have at least four, ½ page entries, typed, double spaced, and 12 pt. font. 2. Describe the problem or conflict existing for the main character. Explain how the problem was or was not resolved. Must be at least one page, typed, double spaced, 12 pt. font. 3. Make a collage representing an event or part of your book. Must be ½ piece of poster board, completely covered with pictures or words. A paragraph explaining the collage must also be included. Typed, double spaced, 12 pt. font. 4. Write a poem about your book. Must be at least four verses. No acrostic poems. 5. Imagine that you are the author of the book you just read. Suddenly the book becomes a best seller. Write a letter to a movie producer convincing him to make your book into a movie. Explain why the story, conflicts, characters etc… would make a good book. Suggest a filming location. Must be at least one page, typed, double spaced, 12 pt. font. 6. Write a complete description of one of the characters in your book. Include a physical description, personality description and emotional description. Must be at least one page, typed, double spaced, 12pt. font. Draw a portrait to accompany the description. 7. Write about the life of one of the characters, twenty years from now. Must be at least one page, typed, double spaced 12 pt. font.
