Joshua: Caleb-Like Faith

The  second  fiddle.  I  can  get  plenty  of   first  violinists,  but  to  find  someone  who   can  play  the  second  fiddle  with   enthusiasm  – that’s  a  problem;  and  if   we  have  no  second  fiddle,  we  have  no   harmony.   – Leonard  Bernstein

Joshua  14:6-‐15 Then  the  people  of  Judah  came  to  Joshua  at   Gilgal.  And  Caleb  the  son  of  Jephunneh the   Kenizzite said  to  him,  “You  know  what  the  LORD   said  to  Moses  the  man  of  God  in  Kadesh-‐barnea concerning  you  and  me.  I  was  forty  years   old   when  Moses  the  servant  of  the  LORD  sent  me   from  Kadesh-‐barnea to  spy  out  the  land,  and  I   brought  him  word  again  as  it  was  in  my  heart.

But  my  brothers  who   went  up   with  me  made   the  heart   of  the  people  melt;  yet  I  wholly   followed   the   LORD  my  God.   And   Moses  swore   on   that  day,  saying,   ‘Surely  the   land  on   which   your  foot   has  trodden  shall  be  an  inheritance   for   you  and  your   children   forever,  because  you   have  wholly   followed   the  LORD  my  God.’   And   now,  behold,  the  LORD  has  kept  me  alive,  just   as  he   said,  these  forty-‐five  years  since  the   time

that  the   LORD  spoke   this  word   to  Moses,  while   Israel  walked  in  the   wilderness.   And  now,   behold,  I  am  this  day  eighty-‐five  years  old.   I   am  still  as  strong  today  as  I  was  in  the  day   that  Moses  sent  me;  my  strength  now  is  as   my  strength  was  then,  for  war  and  for  going   and  coming.  So  now  give  me  this  hill  country   of  which  the  LORD  spoke  on  that  day,  for  you   heard  on  that  day  how  the  Anakim were

there,  with  great  fortified  cities.  It  may  be   that  the  LORD  will  be  with  me,  and  I  shall   drive  them  out  just  as  the  LORD  said.”  Then   Joshua  blessed  him,  and  he  gave  Hebron  to   Caleb  the  son  of  Jephunneh for  an   inheritance.  Therefore  Hebron  became  the   inheritance  of  Caleb  the  son  of  Jephunneh the  Kenizzite to  this  day,  because  he  wholly   followed  the  LORD,  the  God  of  Israel.

Now  the  name  of  Hebron  formerly  was   Kiriath-‐arba.  (Arba was  the  greatest  man   among  the  Anakim.)  And  the  land  had  rest   from  war.

Then   the  people  of  Judah  came  to  Joshua  at   Gilgal.  And   Caleb the  son   of  Jephunneh the   Kenizzite said  to  him, Genesis   15:18-‐19 On  that  day  the  LORD  made  a  covenant  with   Abram,   saying,  “ To  your  offspring  I  give  this   land,  from   the  river  of  Egypt   to  the  great  river,   the  river   Euphrates,  the  land   of  the  Kenites,   the  Kenizzites,  the   Kadmonites,

Joshua  15:17 And  Othniel the  son  of  Kenaz,  the   brother  of  Caleb,  captured  it.  And  he   gave  him  Achsah his  daughter  as  wife.

“You  know  what  the  LORD  said  to  Moses   the  man  of  God  in  Kadesh-‐barnea concerning  you  and  me.  I  was  forty  years   old  when  Moses  the  servant  of  the  LORD   sent  me  from  Kadesh-‐barnea to  spy  out   the  land,  and  I  brought  him  word  again  as   it  was  in  my  heart.

Numbers  14:24 But  my  servant  Caleb,  because  he  has   a  different  spirit  and  has  followed  me   fully,  I  will  bring  into  the  land  into   which  he  went,  and  his  descendants   shall  possess  it.

The  majority  measured  the  giants   against  their  own  strength;  Caleb  and   Joshua  measured  the  giants  against   God.  The  majority  trembled;  the  two   triumphed.  The  majority  had  great   giants  but  a  little  God.  Caleb  had  a   great  God  and  little  giants.                                   – Alan  Redpath

But  my  brothers  who  went  up  with  me   made  the  heart  of  the  people  melt;   yet  I  wholly  followed  the  LORD  my  God.

Numbers  14:6-‐10 And  Joshua  the  son  of  Nun  and  Caleb  the  son  of   Jephunneh…tore  their  clothes  and  said  to  all  the   congregation  of  the  people  of  Israel,  “The  land,   which  we  passed  through  to  spy  it  out,  is  an   exceedingly  good  land.  If  the  LORD  delights  in  us,   he  will  bring  us  into  this  land  and  give  it  to   us…Only  do  not  rebel  against  the  LORD.” Then  all  the  congregation  said  to  stone  them   with  stones.

1  Samuel  17:24-‐26 All  the  men  of  Israel,  when   they  saw  the   man,  fled  from   him  and  were  much  afraid.   And   the  men   of  Israel  said,  “Have  you  seen   this  man  who   has  come  up?   Surely   he  has   come  up   to  defy  Israel.  And   the  king   will   enrich   the  man  who   kills  him  with  great   riches  and   will  give  him  his  daughter   and   make  his  father's  house  free  in  Israel.”

And  David  said  to  the  men  who  stood  by   him, “What  shall  be  done  for   the  man  who   kills  this  Philistine  and   takes  away  the   reproach   from   Israel?   For  who  is  this   uncircumcised  Philistine,  that  he  should   defy  the  armies   of  the  living  God?”

It  is  easier  to  find  a  score  of  men  wise   enough  to  discover  the  truth  than  to   find  one  intrepid  enough,  in  the  face  of   opposition,  to  stand  up  for  it.   – A.  A.  Hodge

You  know  what  the  LORD  said  to  Moses that  the  LORD   spoke  this   word  to  Moses So  now  give  me  this  hill  country  of  which   the  LORD  spoke and  I  shall  drive  them  out  just  as  the   LORD  said

Joshua  1:8 This  Book  of  the  Law  shall  not  depart   from  your  mouth,  but  you  shall   meditate  on  it  day  and  night,  so  that   you  may  be  careful  to  do  according  to   all  that  is  written  in  it.  For  then  you  will   make  your  way  prosperous,  and  then   you  will  have  good  success.

True  faith  rests  upon  the  character  of   God  and  asks  no  further  proof  than  the   moral  perfections  of  the  One  who   cannot  lie.  It  is  enough  that  God  has   said  it.   – A.  W.  Tozer

And  now,   behold,  the  LORD  has  kept   me  alive

It  may  be  that  the  LORD  will  be  with   me,  and  I  shall  drive  them  out  just  as   the  LORD  said

James  4:13-‐15 Come  now,   you  who   say,  “ Today  or  tomorrow   we  will  go   into  such   and  such  a  town  and   spend   a  year  there   and  trade   and  make  a   profit”—yet  you  do   not  know   what  tomorrow   will  bring.   What  is  your   life?  For  you   are  a  mist   that  appears   for   a  little  time  and  then   vanishes.  Instead  you  ought   to  say,  “If  the  Lord   wills,  we  will  live  and  do   this  or  that.”

Trust  the  past  to  God’s  mercy,  the   present  to  God’s  love  and  the  future  to   God’s  providence.   -‐ Augustine
