“WE HOLD THESE TRUTHS TO BE SELFEVIDENT, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of happiness.” Such lofty and powerful words written primarily by Thomas Jefferson and adopted by the Continental Congress in order to break our ties with England and to declare our right to independence. It is interesting to note that Jefferson felt that our unalienable rights are attributable to the Creator. To me that means that he felt there is something innate in our makeup consisting of something of the divine which points us in the direction of life, of liberty and of happiness… Every time I read this part of the Declaration of Independence, I think of Jesus’ words to his followers: “If you continue in my word, you are truly my disciples; and you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free…” What is this truth? Is it self-evident? Where do we find it? Jesus’ truth begins with the radicalness of the incarnation. God wanted to be human with us, to walk with us, live like us, and to die like us. God did not remain some far away unknown notion. Instead, God became like us and knows us very well. The truth continues with Jesus’ compassion for the needs of others. The needs of the sick and the marginalized trumped his own. The needs of others guided and became the keystone for Jesus’ actions. Compassion and mercy became the two guiding lights of Christ’s mission and ministry… The truth became evident in Jesus’ focus on forgiveness. The woman caught in adultery was the recipient of this forgiveness. The Roman soldiers who crucified Jesus were forgiven even as Jesus was dying. “Seventy times seven” was Jesus’ answer to how many times we must forgive each other… So what is self-evident in these truths? It is clear that God loves us and wants to be in relationship with us. It is clear that we are set free from our own egos and our desire to feed them. We are set free to live and love all people in community… This Fourth of July reread the Declaration of Independence in its entirety. Give thanks for the brave men who wrote it and stood behind it. But most of all, give thanks to the Creator who endowed us with unalienable rights and who sent the Son, Jesus Christ, to show us the truths that set us free… pj

This month we are collecting flour & sugar for the Food Pantry. There is a shopping cart at the crosswalk for you to place your donations. Thanks for your help!

The office will be closed on July 3rd & 4th in observance of Independence Day. If you have a pastoral emergency, you can contact Beth at 419-2948326 and she will get the help you need.

Thank you to the St. Paul choir for the beautiful anthem on Pentecost Sunday! As a member of the choir, a person has the privilege to belong to the choir family who once a week gets to sing praises to God. Thank you to all of the St. Paul church members for the prayers, Get Well Wishes, visits, and food. Thanks to Pastor Joe for his communion visits. The many prayers are helping to heal. Ladies Night Out for July will take place at The Corner Inn on Monday, July 17th at 6pm. The cost for the meal will be $10. It’s Christmas in July, so please bring an exchange gift too! Call Brenda Zeigler at 419-2945179 by July 12th to save your spot!

Adopt-A-Friend

Our new program continues this month at Fairhaven! Kids, in grades kindergarten-6th grade, are invited to participate in an AdoptA-Friend program. The children will have some games and refreshments with the residents of Fairhaven and a time of fun and fellowship! This will be great for our children and wonderful for the residents! Our children will meet at the church parking lot at 1:45pm on Sunday, July 23rd for transportation to Fairhaven. The event will last until 3pm. Please encourage your children to participate in this wonderful event! Adults are welcome to come too! Let Beth know if you would be able to help provide transportation and chaperone.
