Opportunities to Get Involved ~ Security Training: KMS is hoping to transition to a new Shabbat and holiday security system that relies on volunteers trained by the Community Security Service (CSS), a New York-based nonprofit that trains synagogue security volunteers around the country. Training will be held on two consecutive Tuesdays, July 26th and August 2nd, from 7:30-10:00pm. Men and women of all ages are welcome; the only requirement is that you be able to be on your feet for up to 3 hours. A number of KMS members have already gone through training, but we need more volunteers to have enough trained members to transition to the new system. If interested (even if you cannot attend training on the above dates), please fill out the online application at http://css.memberlodge.org/ by hitting the "cadet application" button. It should not take more than 2-3 minutes to complete the application. If you have any questions or would like to learn more, contact Michael Eisenstadt, chairman of the KMS security committee, at:
[email protected]. Please support this important initiative by volunteering. ~The KMS Tzedaka Fund helps people in need in the greater Kemp Mill Community. Donations to the Tzedaka Fund would help us meet these requests. Please give generously to the KMS Tzedaka Fund by sending your tax-deductible donation to the KMS office. Checks should be made payable to the KMS Tzedaka Fund. If you are in need of financial assistance, please contact Rabbi Weinberg

Thank You Rabbi Moses At the end of this summer, our KMS family will be transitioning to a full time couple as our Senior Directors of Youth. This new position is the result of the expanding number of youth at KMS, and we are excited to introduce them to our community when they arrive. This transition is bittersweet, as for the past SEVEN YEARS, Rabbi Daniel Moses has led our youth minyanim and supervised countless hours of programming, inspiring our children through his warmth, wisdom and knowledge. We owe a tremendous amount of gratitude to Rabbi Moses for being such a wonderful role model and teacher to our children, and we look forward to celebrating all he has done when our children return in September. Rabbi Moses has brought so much to our shul, but perhaps his most significant contribution is our youth Shavuot night program that has brought over 100 young adults to our Leil Shavuot for the past several years. We hope to incorporate Rabbi Moses into the new structure of the Youth Staff at KMS by having him teach a series of Seudat Shlishit shiurim, Shavuot night sessions, and other opportunities we are exploring.
,כל המלמד בן חבירו תורה מעלה עליו הכתוב כאילו ילדו Whoever teaches the child of a friend Torah is considered as if he had given birth to that child (Sanhedrin 19b) Thank you Rabbi Moses – for all you have done.
Getting To Know You In an effort to promote the warm community feeling we strive for here at KMS, we have begun to introduce you to two KMS members per week. We hope you enjoy meeting your fellow members and will use these brief bios as a catalyst to introduce yourself to others at KMS.
Sarah & Richard Dine Richard and Sarah Dine met at Kesher Israel. Married in 1984, they moved here from Riverdale, NY in 1991, choosing Kemp Mill since so many of their friends from Kesher had moved here. They raised their three kids, Jonathan, Elliot, and Ranana, in Kemp Mill, and found that not only did their kids thrive and make friends but they also made good friends through shul, carpool, and other activities associated with their kids. Richard develops training on security and safety issues for the staff of the National Archives and Records Administration. Sarah is Senior Deputy Editor for Health Affairs, a public policy journal. Jonathan works for Booz Allen doing government consulting, Elliot has finished his first year towards a PhD in molecular biology at Princeton, and Ranana just graduated Williams College and is planning to get a Masters in Theology at Emmanuel College, Cambridge University starting in the fall. All three children have served as gabbaim or leaders in minyanim in high school, college, and, for Jonathan, post-college, which Richard attributes at least in part to the help they gave him when he was gabbai rishon for the 8:45 minyan years ago. Richard currently co-chairs KMS' Bereavement Committee while Sarah is active with the Women's Tefillah Group. Two years ago they were joined in Kemp Mill by Sarah's brother and sister-in-law, Stephen and Barbara Trainin Blank. KMS has been an integral part of the Dines’ lives, for the friendships they have made, the Divrei Torah from Rabbi Bieler and now Rabbi Weinberg, and the growth and leadership opportunities Youth Minyan and other activities have provided for their family.
Erica & Barry Kolatch Erica and Barry Kolatch have lived in Kemp Mill since 1983 and have been members of KMS since its inception. Erica is originally from Halifax, Nova Scotia while Barry, much more prosaically, grew up in New York. They met while students and th celebrated their 38 wedding anniversary earlier this month. Barry is an economist and has spent most of his career working on banking issues both inside and outside the government. He has served as gabbai sheni and after a 15 year hiatus recently rejoined the weekday gabbai team in a very limited way. Erica was the librarian at the Yeshiva of Greater Washington for 12 years. She completed a Masters in computer science in 2001 and is currently an IT project manager supporting the FAA on various systems related to drones (you can download her B4UFLY app for drone operators for iOS or Android). Erica enjoys various fabric arts (she made the Torah mantle for the KMS “Shnat Hasefer” Sefer Torah and the parochet in the Youth Beit Midrash) and these days often has knitting needles in her hands. Erica and Barry have three grown children: Naomi, who lives with her husband Mark and their two children, Alana (4) and Mikey (2) in Newton, MA; Eliezer, who lives with his wife (and former Hebrew Academy classmate) Shoshana (not in photo) and their two children, Alon (6) and Tal (3) in Teaneck, NJ; and Aharon, who lives in Brooklyn. Their favorite part of KMS is the quiet davening and the fact that it is a modern Orthodox congregation in the very best sense of the phrase.
