Getting To Know You In an effort to promote the warm community feeling we strive for here at KMS, we are embarking on a new initiative. We hope you enjoy meeting your fellow members.
Dina and Matt Levitt Dina and Matt Levitt have lived in Kemp Mill and have attended KMS since they moved to the community in 1998. Dina, who hails from Nashville TN, heads the Women's Tefilah Group (and chairs the math Department at CESJDS). Matt, from Boston, MA, is a longstanding member of the security committee (and directs the counterterrorism program at The Washington Institute for Near East Policy). Together they chair the shul's special needs committee. The Levitt boys--Tani 23, Uriel 20, Yona 16, Noam 12--are committed KMS youth minyan participants. The Levitts are hardcore Boston Red Sox fans (is there any other kind?)
and have been spending family time together at Deep Creek Lake every summer for the past 17 years. The Levitts love many things about KMS. But among many wonderful things, the KMS Youth Minyan is a very special place. Not only do the kids have amazing opportunities for learning, leadership, and growth, but the level of amazing inclusion is unprecedented there. Where else can a teen with Down Syndrome be considered by all to be a Gabbai with specific and meaningful jobs, where teens don't bat an eye when he joins them for Hotza'at HaTorah, belting out Shma together with the Chazzan? KMS gave a home to this unique and special group of kids.
Jill Goldwater and Stephen Prensky Jill Goldwater and Stephen Prensky have lived in Kemp Mill since 1998. Jill is from Los Angeles and Steve is from Queens, New York. Prior to arriving in Maryland, they lived in Boulder, Colorado, and New Orleans, Louisiana. They have two children, Benjamin and Miriam, both were born in Boulder. Moving to to the DC metro area, and specifically to Kemp Mill, has given their family a true home. Jill is currently a synagogue Executive Director at Shaare Tefila in Olney and Steve is a contract editor and technical writer for the upstream (E&P) petroleum industry.
When not working, they love to visit their five grandchildren and take advantage of Steve’s overseas professional meeting obligations to travel around the world. Steve has has served KMS on a gabbai team, on the team that set the building lighting timers and thermostats before these tasks were automated, and on the previous team that organized the monthly seudat shlishit. Jill has served on the board of directors, several nominating committees, has been active in Women’s Tefila Group, and was a member of the Rabbi Search Committee. They were attracted to Kemp Mill because it is a welcoming community with many families and diverse Jewish opportunities. KMS has helped them to grow Jewishly and build lifelong friendships.
