Thoughts From the State Chairman

As the state tournaments have wrapped up, it is time to turn our attention to the Northern Plains Regional for Kids and Cadets in Madison, WI, the Cadet National Dual Meet Championships in Kansas City, MO, the Kids National Freestyle and Greco Roman Tournament in Green Bay, WI, the Junior National Dual Meet Championships in Oklahoma City, OK, and the Cadet and Junior National Championships in Fargo, ND. The state again looks like it will be well represented at all of these tournaments, with many opportunities for All American honors and national titles. This year we had fourteen individuals earn Iowa Triple Crown by winning the state tournaments in Folkstyle, Freestyle, and Greco Roman. The Bantam division winners were Hunter Drake, Treyton White, Chase Shiltz, and Jamiir Moore. In the

Midget division Zachary Skopec was our lone winner. In the Novice division Ivan Wolfensperger, Brandon Sorenson, Adam Drain, and Joe Scanlan were our winners. Schoolboy division winners were Jordan Rinken, Terry Stover, Nick Moore, and Cody Krumwiede. In the Cadet division our lone winner was Levi Wolfensperger. Congratulations to all of these winners and to all that competed in the state tournaments this year. A reminder to all Junior level wrestlers that qualified through a Regional tournament or through the Mick Pickford tournament in Fort Madison, you must contact Jason Christenson immediately to reserve your spot on the national team. The rosters are turned in ahead of time and uniforms ordered early so things need to be done accordingly. Good luck to all as you prepare for the final tournaments of the Spring/Summer schedule. I know you will all make us in the state of Iowa proud.

Important Notes for Juniors going to Fargo:

1. The cost is $600 for one style or $750 for both A. Be prepared to pay your deposit ($200) at State. Another check for $400 is also needed but will not be cashed until July 10th B. Raffle tickets are sold for $2 a piece to help pay for your trip C. Send all tickets and remaining balance by July 10th D. Cost is all inclusive, except for extra spending money, Meals will be provided at camp, in Fargo you will receive $10 each day of competition.

Thanks to all of you that helped with the Northern Plains Junior Freestyle and Greco - It went smoothly due, in large part, to those of you who continue to pitch in and help. I would also like to thank Mike Narey and Bernie Stroh from Quality Mat Co for their continued help. They have supplied mats for us for as long as we have been hosting tournaments in the Waterloo area. We couldn’t do it without them. They are great supporters of wrestling. If you that are going

I have finalized the plans for our annual banquet. It will be in Waterloo at the Five Sullivan Brothers Convention Center August 5 at 6:00. Lost Island water park is in Waterloo and I have arranged for a USA Wrestling Day there that same day. Any USA member and family will save $4 per person on the the $20 price of admission. Simply present your current USA membership card at the door. It is a fantastic water park and a great time for the whole family. Sounds like a deal - go to the park for the day and then the IWF

On another subject, the Folkstyle Nationals is coming back to Cedar Falls next year. USA wrestling is being a little slow on settling on a date. UNI has reserved three dates, the last weekend in March or one of the first two weekends in April. The problem with the scheduling revolves around the Ultimate Challenge Series. I hope to see you at the remaining tournaments as well as at the banquet in August. Hey, maybe we can have our IWF board meeting on the lazy river at the water park???

Kids News

What a season. I can’t believe we are nearing the end of another season of wrestling. The State Tournament Series have been completed and I want to congratulate not only those that placed but also those that competed. I also would like to congratulate all of the wrestlers who have really excelled and earned the Iowa Triple Crown by winning the State Championship in each of the Folkstyle, Freestyle and Greco Tournaments. This year there were 14 wrestlers to do so in Iowa. The Bantam Division included Hunter Drake - Carlisle; Treytan White - Cedar Rapids; Chase Shiltz - Creston; and Jamiir Moore - Waterloo. In the Midget Division, Zachary Skopec - West Burlington. In the Novice Division, Ivan Wolfensperger - Denver; Brandon Sorensen - Cedar Falls; Adam Drain - Danville; and Joe Scanlan – Johnston. In the Schoolboy/Girl Division, Jordan Rinken – Denver; Terry Stover – Janesville; Nick Moore - Iowa City; and Cody Krumwiede – Waverly. And finally Levi Wolfensperger – Denver in the Cadet Division. Great Job all of you! Doing the extra training and competing during the summer adds to your skills and experience, which in turn will carry over next winter. As the summer schedule winds down with the Northern Plains Regional in Madison, WI and Kids Nationals in Green Bay, I really believe Iowa will be well represented at both events with the quality of wrestlers that have qualified to go. Good Luck to all of our Iowa Team as they continue to compete!

TO ALL WHO HELP YOUR COACHES WITH CLUBS AND TOURNAMENTS: It’s really difficult for coaches to do all of the work involved with practices and tournaments. I’m sure they really appreciate all of you who volunteer to help them with paper work or offer your organizational skills. I know if you volunteer to help them, then I get what I need to do my volunteer work. I especially appreciate those who read the instructions I send out to be taped on the tables for the USA insurance card handlers. When you guys do what I ask, it makes my volunteer work SO MUCH easier. So, THANK YOU ALL WHO ALSO HELP ME OUT WHEN I CAN’T BE THERE! TO ALL TOURNAMENT HOSTS AND CLUB DIRECTORS: PLEASE return all club and tournament rosters, ALL unused cards, and ALL card waivers that you have collected since last year (2004-2005). Could you please do all of this and have them returned to me BY JUNE 30, 2006, or before. We have the National tournament schedule coming up. The Northern Plains Regional is June 15- 17 in Madison, Wisconsin. The Cadet National Duals is June 23-26 in Kansas City, Missouri. Cadet & Junior Nationals are July 22-29 in Fargo, North Dakota. The Dual team is staying at the Fairfield Inn, 11820 NW Plaza Circle, Kansas City, MO 64153 (phone 816-464-2424). The rate for USA Wrestling is $75. If parents need a place, this hotel is across the street from the event center. Wrestlers will leave Thursday, June 22. Greco Duals will be held June 23-24 and Freestyle will be held June 25-26.

National camp starts July 15 at 2:00 p.m. for Greco wrestlers. Camp is at Camp Dodge in Johnston, IA 52501. On Wednesday, July 19, Greco wrestlers will go home at noon, and Freestyle wrestlers will arrive at 2:00 p.m. The Greco bus will leave from APAC next to Crossroads Mall in Waterloo at 8 a.m. on July 21st. It will also stop at the intersection of I-35 and US 20 at 9 a.m. Freestyle will leave on the 25th at the same times and locations. The National team will be staying in the Best Western Fargo Doublewood Inn at 3333 13th Avenue South, Fargo, ND. (phone 701-2335-3333) Ask about USA Wrestling discount. Iowa USWOA members, USA Wrestling coaches, and USA Wrestling general members. We also mail an issue to each high school wrestling coach in the state. If someone is not receiving their copy of the newspaper, send a postcard to Linda Wachal, 311 Big Jim Ct., Dunkerton, IA 50626, or email [email protected] with your name address, phone#, current USA Wrestling card #, and where your card was purchased. Because this is mailed 3rd Class Bulk, it is not forwarded if your address changes, so be sure to send us address changes. Those who have purchased their card outside of Iowa may receive the paper by sending $5.00 for postage and handling along with name, address, phone and current USA Wrestling card#. Membership must be renewed every year and if you have not renewed your membership your name will be removed from the mailing list.

Iowa Wrestling Federation News 311 Big Jim Ct. Dunkerton, IA 50626

This years Awards Banquet will be held at the Five Sullivan Brothers Convention Center in Waterloo on August 5th. This is being held in conjunction with IWF Board and General meetings which will be held earlier in the day. The cost for the banquet is $20 per person and includes a 2 meat buffet. Everyone is welcome. There is no cost for our IWF/USA All Americans, IWF National Team Coaches, IWF Officials and Pairers, and Board members. They are our honored guests. RSVPs must be made for the dinner by Monday, July 31st. RSVPs are not necessary if you wish to attend the award ceremony only. Presentations will be made to our All Americans, Iowa Triple Crown Winners and Gable Award Winners. There will also be special presentations to the Kids Wrestler of the Year, Female Wrestler of the Year, Cadet Wrestler of the Year, Junior Wrestler of the Year, Senior Wrestler of the Year, Coach of the Year, Pairing Official of the Year, Mat Official of the Year, and Volunteer of the Year. Wrestlers must be present to receive the awards. None will be mailed. If you cnnot attend, please make arrangements for someone to pick up your award. The times will be as follows:

Steve Knipp has made arrangements for a USA Wrestling Day at the Lost Island Water Park. Any USA member and family will save $4 per person on the $20 price of admission. Simply present your current USA membership card at the door. It is a fantastic water park and will be a great time for the whole family! Spend the day at the park and then come for the IWF banquet that evening!
