Ministry in the city: Bishop Suffragan Mary Glasspool (above) joins participants in the L.A. City Youth Pilgrimage for a reflection after the group shared lunches with the homeless in MacArthur Park on June 20. The young people from St. John’s Church, La Verne, and St. James’ Church, South Pasadena, were joined by two teens from the Spirit Journey Native American Youth program of Hollbrook, Arizona, and their leader Kaze Gadway. Below right: Todd Blackham, youth associate at St. James’ Church, plays with children at the tiny but effective playground at Las Familias del Pueblo Child Center on Skid Row, which was founded in the early 1980s by Episcopal priest Alice Callaghan as a community center for sweatshop workers and their families. Callaghan continues to serve as its director. The pilgrimage group was led by Jana Jana Milhon-Martin, lay associate at St. John’s Church, along with Blackham and Erin Winsor, youth intern at St. John’s. Diocesan youth ministries officer Chris Tumilty accompanied the group for part of the week and Kelli Grace Kurtz, vicar of St. John’s Church, served as chaplain. During their five-day pilgrimage, the group also engaged in daily worship and reflection, served lunch to about 500 people at the Midnight Mission, took an “urban safari” at Pershing square, went on a “religious space safari” to the Roman Catholic Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels, the Jewish Wilshire Boulevard Temple and the Episcopal ProCathedral of St. John, worked at the L.A. Regional Food Bank, and served breakfast, bagged groceries and played bingo with seniors at St. Francis Mission Center. The leaders are planning a similar pilgrimage for the summer of 2014; young people throughout the diocese will be invited to participate.
arriage equality for all was reaffirmed June 26 by the Rt. Rev. J. Jon Bruno, bishop of the Diocese of Los Angeles, who commented after the U.S. Supreme Court’s announcement of its rulings on the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) and California’s Prop. 8. “Today we reaffirm that marriage equality does indeed mean marriage equality for all,” Bruno said. “This understanding is widely held within the Diocese of Los Angeles and endorsed by the larger Episcopal Church through its General Convention. “We rejoice at the repeal of DOMA’s discrimination against LGBT families, and we feel confident that Gov. Brown and Attorney Gen. Harris will act swiftly to restore marriage for same-gender couples in California now that the U.S. Supreme Court action will allow the lower court’s decision to stand,” Bishop Bruno added. “Pastoral and liturgical support for samegender couples remains a priority in the Diocese of Los Angeles,” said Bishop Bruno, who five years ago formed a diocesan Task Force on Marriage to provide consultation and collaboration in this area. Meanwhile, Episcopalians at the churchwide level, responding to General Convention actions, formed a similar body and developed liturgies for provisional use. To offer a prayerful community response to the Supreme Court decisions, a service of Holy Eucharist was held on June 27 at St. John’s ProCathedral. Bruno presided, and Los Angeles Bishop Suffragan Mary D. Glasspool was the preacher for the liturgy, titled “A Celebration of Equality.” In the wider Episcopal Church, Presiding Bishop Katharine Jefferts Schori and House of Deputies President Gay Jennings also issued statements on June 26 in support of the Supreme Court rulings. Both statements may be read on the Episcopal News website at www.episcopalnews.com. ?

oe Garagiola, former Major League Baseball star and then TV personality, tells the story about a time when Stan Musial came to the plate in a critical game. As a super-hitter, Musial was at the peak of his career. The opposing pitcher was young and nervous. Garagiola, as the catcher, called for a fastball, but the pitcher shook his head. Joe then signaled for a curve ball, and again, the pitcher shook him off. He then asked for one of the pitcher’s specialties, and still, the pitcher hesitated. So Joe went out to the mound for a conference. He said, “I’ve called for every pitch in the book; what do you want to throw?” “Nothing,” was the pitcher’s shaky reply. “I just want to hold on to the ball as long as I can.” Have you ever felt like that? I have! There are times when I just want to hold on to that which I currently have control over, without moving. Of course, it doesn’t take too terribly long to realize, especially from the baseball example, that if one stays in that place without ever taking the risk of participation, the entire game comes to a halt. The Apostle Paul had a history with the Galatians. And the Galatians had a history with the Apostle Paul. According to the Book of Acts, Paul had founded churches in Gala-

But in his absence, certain Judaizing teachers had infiltrated the churches in Galatia, declaring that in addition to having faith in Jesus Christ, a Christian was obliged to keep the Mosaic law. Paul insisted, on the contrary, that a person becomes right with God only by faith in Christ and not by the performance of good works, ritual observances, and the like. In fact, his letter to the Galatians deals with the question of whether Gentiles must become Jews before they become Christians. So serious was this crisis in Galatia, and so strong were Paul’s arguments in addressing it, that the letter to the Galatians has long been known as the “Magna Carta of Christian Liberty.” Today’s lesson from Galatians can be seen as a kind of “So pitch the ball, already!” Lesson: “Don’t go back to the kind of legalism from which Christ set you free!” says Paul to the Galatians. “For freedom Christ has set us free.” And what Paul says to the Galatians, he says to us: “LIVE, then, and be guided by the Spirit!” ?
