Calendar

May has been a sad month for our family. We said goodbye to Karrie’s sister, Bunnie, who was taken from us all too soon by Alzheimer’s Disease. Her funeral was a bittersweet time for us to gather as family in Snyder, Oklahoma to pay tribute to her and look to one another for comfort. May was also a month when my 93-year-old aunt was no longer able to live at home. We moved Aunt Lois from her home in the country outside of Haileyville to a nursing facility in McAlester. Karrie and I visited her at the end of Annual Conference and she is nearing the end of her journey of life. May has also been a happy month for our family. We have attended two weddings, celebrated our wedding anniversary, and reconnected with friends at Annual Conference. On the final day of Annual Conference, I was reappointed as pastor at New Hope, which is a very good gift for me! And so, once again, life is bitter and life is sweet. Life is made up of hellos and goodbyes. Life invites us to celebrate at the same time that it requires that we grieve. On Sunday night, as I gathered with the Order of Elders at First United Methodist Church in Tulsa, Dan Pulver led us in singing the Charles Wesley hymn, ”And Are We Yet Alive.” Some of the verses are very appropriate as I reflect on the journey that I have walked in this month of May. “And are we yet alive, and see each other’s face? Glory and thanks to Jesus give for his almighty grace! Preserved by power divine to full salvation here, Again in Jesus’ praise we join, and in his sight appear. What troubles have we seen, what mighty conflicts past, Fightings without, and fears within, since we assembled last! Yet out of all the Lord hath brought us by his love; And still he doth his help afford, and hides our life above. Let us take up the cross till we the crown obtain, And gladly reckon all things loss so we may Jesus gain.”

Sharefest Workday at Winds House

“Then followed that beautiful season... Summer.... Filled was the air with a dreamy and magical light; and the landscape Lay as if new created in all the freshness of childhood.” Henry Wadsworth Longfellow 2

A-OK! Summer Projects In June old cell phones will again be collected. These will be given to the sheriff’s department to be distributed to the elderly and those in perilous domestic situations. A container is by the counte in the gathering area. The phones will be reprogrammed to call only 911. You might delete any personal information, however. In July New Hope folks will work at the Regional Food Bank one Saturday afternoon. That date has not been set. The August project is to work and serve lunch one Saturday morning at the City Rescue Mission. It is not yet scheduled. A container for old eyeglasses is on the counter any time you have those to donate. This is an ongoing project and the glasses, both prescription and just reading glasses, are picked up regularly. New Projects will be needed for fall so look around you for ideas of ways to help others. Since this is a congregation-driven ministry, suggestions for projects are always welcome but remember individuals put together the project needs and any work schedules as each is planned. If you have an idea and would like to implement it, contact David Salter or leave a note in the office.

Helping Hands Food Pantry We have served 68 families this year. Thank you for your continued support of the food pantry. Our needs now are: chunky soups, all kinds of canned fruit, creamy peanut butter, chili without beans. Thank you for being so generous. Kimberly & Sharia The pantry is open from 1:00 until 3:00 p.m. the second and fourth Tuesday afternoons of each month.

Exodus House Update & Needs An earlier New Hope project refurbished and set up an apartment in Exodus House, a complex for those recently-released from incarceration. Residents may stay six months as they adjust to being back in regular society. They must attend church and weekly counseling sessions. Guests are not permitted. Although there have been no long-term residents since it is familysized, individuals have stayed briefly while smaller apartments were prepared.

In mid-June it will be made available to a woman and her two children. It would to provide clothing, undergarments and items such as formula bottles, a potty seat, burp cloths and diapers. The pantry will also need to be stocked for their arrival. If you would like to give money toward this, make the check payable to New Hope but designate that it is to go to Exodus House. For more information about specific items to donate, contact Denning or Vita Crowe or Nellyne Hanlin.

Preparing and Painting at Winds House

A Note from Cali

by Cali Eck Greetings! My article this month is a little different. I want to let you know a little about the process I am going through for ordination. One of them is that I have to read. I have to read a LOT! I am learning many things as well, though. I am reading a book that I want to share with you. The book is titled, American Saint: Francis Asbury and the Methodist by John Wigger. The book is a biography of Francis Asbury. It is also a fascinating tale of the lives of early itinerant preachers before, during, and after the Revolutionary War. If you are anything like me I knew little of Asbury, expect that we have a street named after him in town, when I began to read this book. The author tells of how Asbury was single minded in his desire to carry out Wesley’s design for the Methodist movement, but as the revolution became evident and the fact that Wesley himself was against the war, he worked to preserve an infant church that he believed was after the heart of God. To walk through the life of Francis Asbury is to encounter people. Asbury firmly believed that the Methodist Church was a connection. He stood firm in his desire to keep it that way during his leadership. Asbury lived out that connection by traveling the connection of up to 9 conferences, riding on horseback 2000-4000 miles a year to preach and visit with the people called Methodist. He traveled so much that it is said he was more recognized face to face than any other person of his time, including persons such as George Washington and Thomas Jefferson. He truly lived what he taught and believed. We would do well to remember and live by his example today. H e was gracious and lived to serve others. He held firm to his belief that the class meetings were fundamental to the spiritual growth of the church. These small groups were designed to foster discipline and communal fellowship. Sound familiar? If you like history and want the challenge of going deeper in understanding people of the church then I would gladly share with you this story. Asbury was a man of deep conviction and commitment. I have a much greater respect and understanding of the circuit riding preachers of our past and a better understanding of what it took to develop a church in the midst of war. I found myself thinking about present controversies that church faces and realize we can endure and grow if we faint not. Stay faithful and remember God is always faithful even in the middle of life’s struggles. 4

Thank you to Jose Medina for the years of preparing Wednesday meals. We all appreciate his service and good cooking! Although Jose will not be making future Wednesday meals, he’ll still be here and cooking with Men of Hope. The menus for this fall’s Wednesday meals will be worked out by Cali Eck, Mary Ann Hullinger and Vita Crowe.

Dear New Hope Family, Thank you for the nice retirement lunch and expressions of appreciation through the many kind words, cards and gifts. It has been a privilege to serve in this position for so many years. It’s been a wonderful learning experience and has pushed me in areas I would not have otherwise ventured to go. Lana For those who missed last month’s newsletter, Lana retired May 31 after serving in the church office since 1982 when it was still Shook Memorial. As the church grew, so did her duties and she became Church Administrator when New Hope moved into this building. She has worked with nine pastors and has juggled many different responsibilities in her job.
