Please keep in mind that these take 2 weeks to complete. If you are not sure if you have a completed check on file or if you have any questions, please contact the school office.

Dear Janssen School Community, Happy New Year! Our students welcomed in 2017 by coming back to school with a readiness to learn and a willingness to do #TheJanssenWay. Our classrooms and community circles were filled with students sharing their fun-filled experiences from winter break. The sharing of these experiences continued during our lunch and recess times. The happiness that our students brought back with them could light up an entire skyscraper. It was contagious! Everywhere I walked, I witnessed happiness--students working in small groups, staff collaborating with each other, volunteers helping in classrooms, and parents/grandparents picking up children at the end of the day. This is such a great way to start the year! With January comes the end of Semester I and progress reports. Our teachers are assessing student learning to share with you your child’s progress towards their learning goals. An area of focus from each grade level is having our students be successful problem solvers--whether by breaking down story problems in math or reading through a text to make meaning of an author’s message. You will have access to your child’s progress report for semester one by the end of this month. Because of the frequent conversations between parent and teacher throughout the semester, progress reports will help confirm what your child can do and with what he/she may struggle. A great thing to share with you that is happing this month: our annual science fair. Our scientists are putting their final touches on their experiments. Because of their curiosity, creativity, problem solving and collaboration, our students are discovering and/or uncovering science concepts. Thank you to all staff and parents for their support in making the science fair a time for our students to practice being scientists.

Finally, another big thank you to our families when dropping off and picking up our students. You are very conscientious to weather conditions and make the effort to slow down and watch for pedestrians. Safety should always be on our minds. This is another example of...we are better when we work together. To a great 2017! Sincerely, Hercules Nikolaou, Ph.D. Janssen Elementary School Principal

JANSSEN COUNSELOR CORNER Happy January Janssen Families, Here are some updates from your friendly neighborhood School Counselor: Life Skills Kindergarten and First Grade: These grades have been working on identifying feelings in others and the clues our face and bodies give that show feelings. We have also been talking about how we can show kindness and help others that are having strong feelings. 2nd-4th Grade: In these grade we have been discussing how everyone has differences, which make us unique and also gives us different perspectives. We have been discussing ways to work with friends who might have different perspectives or different preferences. We have been focusing on empathy and putting ourselves in other people’s shoes. Empathy helps us understand others and helps to solve problems as they arise. Mindful Moments With all grades, I have been trying to work mindful moments into the end of each of our Life Skills lessons. During mindful moments we take a quiet couple of minutes to focus on one sound, thought, or feeling, using a program such as Mind Yeti (https://www.mindyeti.com). This helps to calm our busy minds and gives the student skills for when they need to focus at school, when they are overwhelmed or when they are having strong feelings. With our busy days it has been nice to take a minute to breathe! I hope everyone had safe, happy, and stress-free holidays. As always if you have any questions or concerns about your child, please do not hesitate to contact me.

2017 Jogging 4 Janssen Family Fun Run & Crazy Course

Saturday March 4, 2017 - 9:30 AM (Enter through front doors to check-in at table and then meet in small gym) Is this recent cold snap keeping your kids indoors and starting to drive everyone in your house crazy? Would your family love just one chance to run the halls of the school? Does your family like obstacle courses/stations? If you answered yes to any of the questions above, the Janssen PTO has the perfect event for your family right around the corner. The 4th annual Jogging 4 Janssen Family Fun Run & Crazy Course will take place right at the Janssen school. The event is meant to bring the children and families of the community together to be more active and promote a healthy lifestyle. What a better way to do just that than by running the halls of the school, climbing the rock wall, completing fun stations and making it through wacky obstacles. This event is for the entire family: Parents, Aunts, Uncles, Grandmas, Grandpas and especially kids. All participants will run, jog or walk through our family friendly course. There will be a few obstacles along the way, but they will be geared for the children and not too strenuous for adults. Parents are encouraged to participate along with their children. If participating in this event, return a waiver for EACH participant, along with the registration fee, in an envelope to the school office by Thursday, February 23, 2017. The registration fee is $5 per family this year. Each of the kids that participate will get a finishing prize. Additional registration forms are available on the PTO facebook page, near PTO bulletin board or in the office. Questions can be directed to Joy Sams at [email protected] or (920) 819-5431.
