Custom Fit The Tablet Tote shown above was made for a tablet, 9½” x 7”. If you want to custom fit another size tablet or laptop, it’s a simple matter of taking measurements. 1. Measurement A = width of tablet; add 3” for seams and ease. 2. Measurement B = height of tablet; add 4” for seams, ease & grommet area 3. Measurement C = ½” is included in the ease measurement for thickness of tablet; if measuring a laptop, use actual thickness and add it to both the width (A) and the height (B) Example: Note: the final measurements shown refer to the cut size of the outer fabric & lining pieces. Seam allowances are ½” unless otherwise stated.
Width: 9½” + 3” = 12½”
Height: 7” + 4” = 11”
Preparation Press Fuse & Fleece to the back of the outer fabric pieces. Note: If more padding is desired, low-loft batting can be used in place of the Fuse & Fleece.

Front Band Find the vertical center of the fabric and draw a line 2” on each side of the center to create a 4” wide area down the center. This will be stitched with decorative stitches.
Rotate the design if needed; it should be stitched vertically over the top of the decorative stitches (same direction). Center the design in the hoop; check the placement of the design using the Trace feature. Stitch the design; remove the fabric from the hoop and tear away the excess stabilizer.
wrong side of band fabric
Place 1-2 layers of tear-away stabilizer behind the band fabric; use temporary spray adhesive to hold the layers together. Hoop the stabilized fabric in the large (B) for the Deco 340 embroidery machine with the decorative stitches centered in the hoop. Attach the hoop to the machine. The design shown is from the BERNINA exclusive design collection, Emerald Paisleys. Using an embroidery software program, download Design #21009-29 to a USB stick. Note: BERNINA ArtLink 6 is available for downloading at no cost (FREE!) from bernina.com. This entry-level software program allows you to mirror image, resize, customize thread colors and print templates.

Select the design a second time and Mirror Image it to create the design to the right. Select Hoop B. Enlarge the entire design by 18% (139mm x 58mm).
Using a thread color that blends with the fabric and an open embroidery foot, sew vertical lines of decorative stitches of your choice. The object is to create texture so using open stitches rather than heavy ones work well for this.

Put the USB stick in the port on the right side of the Deco 340. Select Design ##21009-29.
Hold on to stitches with one hand and tear stabilizer away with the other one.
Trim the band to 4¾” x 11”, placing the design approximately in the center from top to bottom. Fold ¾” under on each long edge; press. The band should now be 3¼” wide. Position the band down the center of the front of the tote, matching the upper and lower raw edges. Pin in place. Using a blanket stitch and an open embroidery foot, stitch along both long edges to secure the band. Tip: If using BERNINA Open Embroidery Foot #20/20C/20D, position the edge of the band along the inside toe of the foot and adjust the needle position all the way to the right. The needle will drop just outside the edge, sewing on the tote fabric; the vertical part of the stitch and will “bite” into the fabric, and the horizontal part of the stitch will sew on the band.

Inside Pocket Fold the 9” square of pocket fabric into quarters and crease to mark the vertical and horizontal centers. Place 1-2 layers of tear-away stabilizer behind the pocket square; use temporary spray adhesive to hold the layers together.
Construction Place the banded tote front right sides together with the front lining piece. Stitch a ½” seam across the upper edge. Repeat with the tote back and lining (pocket will be oriented with opening toward the tote fabric.).
Hoop the stabilized fabric in the hoop A (F) for the Deco 340 embroidery machine with the marked center of the fabric in the center of the hoop. Attach the hoop to the machine. Select desired monogram style and type in your letters; they will be automatically arranged. Make sure the monogram is positioned to stitch in the center of the hoop. Stitch the monogram at 100% (57mm x 59mm). Remove the fabric from the hoop and tear away the excess stabilizer. Front tote/lining
Back tote/lining
Place the front and back tote/lining pieces right sides together, matching the seams and raw edges; pin. Stitch along the sides and the tote end, leaving the lower lining edges open for turning. Press the side seams open and then turn the tote to the right side. Trim the stitched square to 7” x 5”, centering the monogram. Place it right sides together with the remaining pocket piece. Using a ¼” seam allowance, sew along all four edges of the pocket, leaving a 3”4” opening along the bottom for turning. Turn the pocket to the right side and press. Position pocket about 3” down from the upper edge of the lining back and centered from side to side. Edgestitch in place along the sides and lower edges.
Tip: Slip a pressing ham into the bag and use it for a pressing surface.
Tuck the lining down into the bag. Edgestitch the upper edge of tote using the freearm of the machine to make it easy to manage the circular opening.

Magnetic Closure
Handles
Following the manufacturer’s instructions, attach a magnetic closure to the upper edge of the lining only. Position the closure ¾” down from the upper edge, centering it from side to side. Tip: Stabilize the wrong side of the lining with a small square of stabilizer or interfacing before attaching the closure.
Fold one strip in half lengthwise with wrong sides together. Using a ¼” seam allowance, seam the ends and the open side, leaving about 3”-4” open for turning.
Grommets
1½”
Using the template included with the grommets, draw a circle, positioning the center of the circle 1½” down from the upper edge and 2¼” in the side edge.
opening
fold
Trim the corners and turn the handle right side out and press. Turn the edges of the seam allowance in toward the wrong side and edgestitch the opening closed.
2¼”
Repeat for a second grommet on the opposite of the front. Mark two on the back using the same measurements.
Repeat with the remaining strip to make the second handle. From the front of the grommet, slip one end of a handle through the opening and pull it through about 2½”-3”. Using a zigzag stitch, sew handle to itself, securing it to the tote.
Trim the fabric from the center of the circle
Tip: Use a buttonhole cutter and wooden block to slice a cross inside the circle. Trim away the inside of the circle using scissors. Place raised grommet in hole on right side. Place pronged grommet on wrong side; press to snap together.
Finishing Pull the lining out of the tote and close the lower edge by folding the seam allowances in to the wrong side and edgestitching across the opening. Tuck the lining back down into the bag.
