Donations are continuing to flood in for the ‘Tiser’s Pennies for Our Heroes campaign. Both Ilkeston Town Hall and the Nationwide building society have collected cash from generous readers who have donated to the cause. We want to raise money to pay for a tree to be planted in memory of Ilkeston’s brave war dead and to mark the centenary of the outbreak of World War One. We’re asking you, our loyal readers, to dig deep as you have done so many times before and support this worthy cause. More than ten jars and money bags have been handed in at the Nationwide on Bath Street and more than £150 has been counted up by staff at Erewash Borough Council. Emma Kent, customer service team leader at Ilkeston Town Hall, said: “People keep on coming and bringing their change and jars in. “They are really keen to get behind the campaign and it shows with how much has already been donated.” Karen Hill, Nationwide branch manager, said: “Donations have slowed up a bit over the past week or so, I can only

Green light for grants boost Funding for grants to local community and voluntary groups is set to be doubled in a move confirmed at this month’s full council meeting. The community boost will see grants funding doubled for groups, enabling them to apply for handouts of up to £2,000 to help with projects and work within the Erewash borough. Erewash Borough Council’s deputy leader and lead member for community engagement, Councillor Carol Hart, said she hoped the news would be welcomed by many volunteers and community groups. She added: “We are proud that we have been able to double the amount of money we have on offer so that we can
help even more groups. “We know these are challenging times for the voluntary sector so have worked hard to ensure we are able to increase the money-pot.” The news comes as the deadline approaches for applications for the next round of grants, which closes on March 30. Community and voluntary groups, registered charities and social enterprises across Erewash can apply for funding to help them with vital work, projects and services so long as their work benefits residents. Anyone wanting more information on the small grants scheme can contact partnership development officer Amie Elliot on 0115 907 2244.
‘People are really keen to get behind the campaign’
would encourage everyone to support the campaign and donate as much as they can. “It’s something that the whole community can get involved in and we really want to succeed.” If you can help or have any suggestions about where you would like to see the tree call the ‘Tiser newsdesk on 0115 9446165. Pablo needs a new home
•• ••
This week’s Rescue Me pet looking for a home is Pablo, a large male cat who ended up at the animal shelter as a stray with a nasty abscess. Leanne Manchester, of Derby RSPCA, said: “The abscess is now clearing up but poor Pablo doesn’t have a home yet. After spending time living on the streets he is quite wary of people. He needs an owner with the time and patience to show Pablo that he can trust them.” Call the Abbey Street centre in Derby on 01332 344620.
