Exodus 20:8-11 Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. 9 Six days you shall labor and do all your work, 10 but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the LORD your God. On it you shall not do any work, neither you, nor your son or daughter, nor your manservant or maidservant, nor your animals, nor the alien within your gates. 11 For in six days the LORD made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, but he rested on the seventh day. Therefore the LORD blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy. 8

The What and Why of the 4th Commandment What to Do (v. 8-11) Remember the Sabbath Day (see Exodus 16:11-30) Keep it Holy: The Sabbath is a Day of Rest (v. 8, 10) A Day to the LORD (“The Market Day of the Soul”) Leviticus 23:3: “There are six days when you may work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath of rest, a day of sacred assembly. You are not to do any work; wherever you live, it is a Sabbath to the Lord.” Luke 4:16: “He (Jesus) went to Nazareth, where He had been brought up, and on the Sabbath day He went into the synagogue, as was His custom. And He stood up to read…” “To keep something holy means to dedicate it exclusively for worship.” - Phil Ryken Don’t Do Any Work: The Sabbath is a Day of Rest (v. 11) Sabbath means “to cease or to rest.” Luke 23:55-24:1: The women who had come with Jesus from Galilee followed Joseph and saw the tomb and how his body was laid in it. Then they went home and prepared spices and perfumes. But they rested on the Sabbath in obedience to the commandment. On the first day of the week, very early in the morning, the women took the spices they had prepared and went to the tomb. Spend one day a week in a different kind of activity. Care for Others and Yourself: The Sabbath is a Day of Mercy and Necessity (Matthew 12:1-14) 1

Why To Keep the Sabbath Day Holy (v. 11) The LORD rested on the 7th day from work. “The Lord rested does not mean rest in the sense of inactivity. God rested after 6 days, but He was still active in upholding the world by the word of His power.” - Phil Ryken The LORD blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy. Mark 2:27: “The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath.” “God gives us Sabbath as a gift; it’s an island of get-to in a sea of have-to. He also offers us Sabbath as a test; it’s an opportunity to trust God’s work more than our own.” - Kevin DeYoung Why the Sabbath is on Sunday Jesus rose again from the dead on Sunday (see John 20:1,19; Acts 20:7; I Cor. 16:2). “(Christians) no longer observe the Sabbath, but direct their lives towards the Lord’s day, on which our life is refreshed by Him and by His death.” - Ignatius

“Christ took the Sabbath into the grave with Him and brought the Lord’s Day out of the grave with Him on the resurrection morn.” - BB Warfield
