Blazers were 6-4-0-0 in season series ROSTER BREAKDOWN: The Blazers roster currently sits at 25 players (2 goaltenders, 7 defensemen and 16 forwards). The roster includes 12 players selected in the WHL Bantam Draft, six players from the free agent list, five players via trade, and two players selected from the CHL Import Draft. The roster breakdown by region includes nine from B.C., eight players from Alberta, three from Saskatchewan, two from Manitoba, two from Switzerland and one from the USA. THE MATCH UP: The Blazers and Rockets will meet eight times this season after squaring off 10 times last season. The Blazers finished 6-40-0 in the season series last year and swept the Kelowna Rockets 4-0 in a best-of-seven Western Conference second round playoff series. The Rockets won the first match up of the season 5-2 last night in Kamloops. KAMLOOPS BLAZERS ‘Who to Watch’: The Kamloops Blazers offensive leaders have changed this season as the Blazers have returned four of their top eight scorers from last season. Tim Bozon will be expected to lead the way after posting 36 goals, 55 assists and 91 points last season. Cole Ully, Matt Needham and Chase Souto will be thrust into an offensive role this season. The 18-year-old Ully posted 22 goals and 50 points last season which got him drafted in the 5th round by the Dallas Stars. Needham is entering his 18-year-old season as well and has posted seasons of 69 points over the past two seasons. Chase Souto is the longest tenured Blazer playing in 179 games over the past three seasons. Souto posted career highs last year with 15 goals, 16 assists and 31 points in 68 games. Tyson Ness also joins that group of players expected to score for the Blazers after being acquired from Red Deer. The 20-year-old had 19 goals and 39 points last season and should build on those numbers. Joe Kornelsen, Aspen Sterzer, Tristan Sieben and Aaron Macklin make up the supporting cast for the Blazers. Mitch Friesen is entering his second season and should have a chance to prove himself this year. There will be plenty of opportunity for the young forwards on the Blazers roster as Jesse Shynkaruk, Eric Krienke, Nathan Looysen and Mitch Lipon are all 17year-olds looking to prove themselves. Nick Chyzowski is the lone 16-year-old on the roster. On defence, the Blazers have some young players who will need to take on a bigger role this year. Sam Grist and Landon Cross are the steady veterans both entering their third WHL seasons. They will need to lead the backend. A pair of 18-year-olds in Ryan Rehill and Josh Connolly will be put into position to succeed. Connolly will likely get every opportunity on the power play, while Rehill will be counted on to kill penalties and shut down the opponents top players. A trio of 17-year-olds are all looking to establish themselves this season. Jordan Thomson will be in the line-up every night and will need to play in all situations. Edson Harlacher was selected by the Blazers in the import draft and he has shown he has the tools to be a solid defender. Connor Clouston spent some time with the Blazers last year. In goal, the Blazers have two 19-year-old options in returnee Taran Kozun and acquired veteran Bolton Pouliot. Both Kozun and Pouliot have been behind stellar goaltenders and will compete for playing time with the starting role up for grabs. KELOWNA ROCKETS ‘Who to Watch’: The Rockets are a highly touted group coming off a 52-win season and a B.C. Division Championship. The majority of that Rockets team returns this season to defend the B.C. Division crown and likely be one of the best teams in the WHL. Up front, the Rockets will have to wait and see if leading scorer Myles Bell will return from the New Jersey Devils training camp. The 20-year-old was selected in the 6th round by the Devils in the 2013 NHL Draft. If Bell doesn’t return, the Rockets have plenty of options as Ryan Olsen, Zach Franko, Tyson Baillie, Rourke Chartier are all expected to lead the offense these season for the Rockets. Depth is something the Rockets have plenty of as Carter Rigby, Colton Heffley, and Tyrell Goulbourne are all players entering their third season in the WHL. Second year forwards Cole Linakar, Austin Glover, and Henrik Nyberg will play bigger roles. Rookie Nick Merkley will play a player to watch as will Justin Kirkland. Both Merkley and Kirkland saw action in the playoffs for the Rockets last season. Astonishingly, the Rockets return all seven of their defensemen from last year’s team. Damon Severson leads the way as the 19-year-old is primed for stardom. Fellow NHL Draft picks Madison Bowey and Mitchell Wheaton will both play big roles for the Rockets. Jesse Lees and 17-year-old Riley Stadel can contribute at both ends of the ice. Add in 20-year-old veteran MacKenzie Johnston, 16-year-old Joe Gatenby and 17-year-old rookie Dalton Yorke and the
