Hurricanes (9-37-2-3) vs. Rockets (39-6-0-2) VS. Rockets: Lethbridge and Kelowna wrap up their season series tonight with the Rockets going for the 3-game sweep of the Hurricanes. In their first meeting (October 16th), Kelowna dominated the Canes on the way to a 6-0 win after outshooting them 62-26. Lethbridge ran into penalty trouble and gave Kelowna 13 powerplays – they scored on 3 of them while the Hurricanes were 0/4 with the man advantage. Just two weeks ago, Giorgio Estephan opened the scoring to give Lethbridge the lead, but the Rockets scored a pair of goals in 1:15 near the end of the second period before skating to a 5-1 win. The Hurricanes have dropped 7 straight heading into tonight’s game while the Rockets are on a three game win streak after a 6-2 win over Medicine Hat last night. Kelowna remains dominant on home ice with a 17-2-0-2 record. Riley Sheen leads the Hurricanes with 32 points, Myles Bell leads with 50 (28G, 22A) for Kelowna. Last Game: vs. Vancouver, 10-0 Loss: It was an ugly 10-0 loss for the Hurricanes last night in Vancouver, thanks in part to the Giants going 5/5 on the powerplay. Tyler Morrison opened the scoring when his point shot hit the post, went off Jonny Hogue and into the back of the net making it 1-0. Travis McEvoy added Vancouver’s second goal about 5 minutes later and it was 2-0 after 20 minutes. The Giants blew the game open with 3 more goals in the second starting with Dalton Sward. The Hurricanes were on the PP and deep in the Giants zone when Vancouver broke out 3-on-1 shorthanded and they converted on Sward’s goal. Moments later, Luca Leone made it 4-0 and that was all for Hogue after allowing 4 goals on 15 shots. Vancouver would lead the game 5-0 through 40 minutes when Thomas Foster beat Jarrod Schamerhorn. The Giants poured it on in the third period starting with a pair of goals from Sward and Jackson Houck just 35 seconds apart. Vancouver then scored three straight powerplay goals (Ty Ronning, Arvin Atwal and Houck) for the 10-0 final. Giants outshot Lethbridge 40-18 and again were 5/5 on the PP; the Hurricanes were 0/2. Their final deal was for goalie Jarrod Schamerhorn from Portland for a 7th rounder in 2014. PLAYER MOVEMENT: The Hurricanes have been wheeling and dealing all season long. The team dealt Remi Laurencelle to the Everett Silvertips for a 6th round pick in 2014 and a conditional 6th rounder in 2015. The Hurricanes and Spencer Meyer mutually parted ways as he’s returning home to BC to attend school. Joel Topping made the same decision in early December. In the first half of the season, the Hurricanes dealt Chris Tai to Brandon (for an 8th round pick in 2015) after the team acquired Teagan Sacher from Regina. Axel Blomqvist was traded to Victoria (for a 4th and an 8th round pick this year), while Ryan Pilon found a new home in Brandon after being traded to the Wheaties for (D) Nick Walters, (LW) Taylor Cooper and Prospect (D) Tanner Browne. The rights to Colt Conrad were also traded to Brandon and if he signs, the Hurricanes receive a 5 th round pick in 2016. Defenceman Tyler Bell joined the team after a trade with Moose Jaw. Lastly, Jaimen Yakubowski & Sam McKechnie went to Seattle for Forwards Carter Folk, Riley Sheen and a 3rd rounder in 2015. Both were reunited with Griffin Foulk who was acquired via the Adam Henry trade. BY THE LETTER: The Hurricanes named 20-year old Brady Ramsay the interim Captain with Josh Derko still out with a knee injury. Tyler Bell has been named the other Assistant Captain along with Macoy Erkamps. U17 CHALLENGE: Hurricanes rookie Giorgio Estephan captured a Silver medal with Team Pacific at the World Under-17 Hockey Challenge. Team Pacific was shutout 4-0 by the USA in the Gold medal game. Estephan finished with 6 points (3G, 3A) in 6 games. MACS TOURNY: Another excellent showing for Hurricanes prospects with Stuart Skinner, Kody White, Andrew Nielsen, Tak Anholt, Tanner Browne, Cole Davis and Eric Szudor all competing. Browne (Okanagan Rockets) and Skinner (SSAC Athletics) advanced to the playoff round. Meanwhile, Canes prospect Brandon Kennedy (Delta Wild Hockey Academy) won Bronze at the World Sport School Challenge. IN THE CAGE: 19-year old Teagan Sacher is 3-4-0-1 with a 3.63 GAA and a .901 save %, while he recovers from an upper body injury the team recalled Jonny Hogue at the beginning of January to serve as backup before the acquisition of Schamerhorn at the trade deadline. Hogue is still in search of his first win this season, while Schamerhorn is still looking for his first win since being acquired by the Canes. He’s 3-4 on the season.
