Kenji Batchelor - newly qualified (NQ) at Barlow Robbins LLP I was delighted to be offered a newly qualified position in the Charities Department in September 2013. The biggest challenge on qualification is dealing with the loss of the word “Trainee” before your name. For better or worse there is a leap in accountability and expectation that is terrifying and exciting in equal measure. That said, I still work closely with my colleagues and their metaphorical “door” (in the new, open plan office) is always open for any questions I may have. The high quality training and hands-on experience I have gained throughout the two years of my Training Contract has also proved an invaluable springboard for the leap into qualification. Following qualification I have already been involved in a wide range of charity issues including registration of charities, incorporations, mergers, property issues and advising on trustees’ duties and responsibilities. My day to day work is a great balance of working on my own files and assisting colleagues with their matters. The Firm’s commitment to training does not end when you qualify and I have been on numerous training courses and seminars since September. The Firm also actively encourages membership to relevant committees and professional groups and involvement in pro bono activities. I am a member of the Charity Law Association, have recently sat on the working party reviewing Charity Commission queries on the law relating to permanent endowment and am in the process of joining the trustee board of a local charity
