KENTUCKY: INSTRUCTIONS TO AMEND If you used TurboTax Online to prepare and file your original return, follow these steps. If you used TurboTax Desktop, skip down to “Desktop Customer Start Here!” 1.

Save Your TurboTax Online 2010 return to your computer: a. Sign in to TurboTax Online and open your tax return

b. On the Home tab, click Save your 2010 return to your computer.

c. Save your return to your computer’s hard drive, preferably in the My Documents folder for Windows or the Documents folder for Mac. The file is saved with a .tax2010 filename extension. d. Click on Save & Sign Out in the upper right corner of screen Download the TurboTax Desktop version a. Go to http://turbotax.intuit.com/ and click on My Account

b. Click on the Downloads and Unlocks

c. Sign in using your User ID and Password.

d. Click on the Downloads that are available

e. Click the Sign Out in the upper right hand corner of the screen

Desktop Customers Start Here! 1. Open Your Tax File in Desktop a. Open your desktop TurboTax product b. On the 1st screen select Find a Tax File

c. Go to the folder or location where you saved the .tax2010 file d. Select the .tax2010 file, and then select Open e. From the File menu, choose Save

Follow these steps to begin to amend your Kentucky return: 1.

Select Forms

Scroll down the left side of screen to Kentucky Individual and click on Info Worksheet

Scroll down the Kentucky Information Worksheet to Part IX – Amended Return a. Check the box to indicate Filing a Kentucky amended return

b. If you were a part-year resident or a nonresident of Kentucky AND you filed Kentucky Form 740-NP: Individual Income Tax Return Nonresident or Part-Year Resident, you

are done with amending your Kentucky return. Go to the print and file instructions below. c.

If you paid an amount when filing your original Kentucky return, enter that amount on the Previous Kentucky payment made line.

You can find the amount you paid on Kentucky Form 740, line 42.

d. OR if you received a refund with your original Kentucky return, enter that amount on the Previous Kentucky refund received line.

You can find the amount of your refund on Kentucky 740, line 34.

Click the QuickZoom box to go to Form 740X: Resident Amended Individual Income Tax Return

Note: The Kentucky Amend form is showing the numbers from your updated tax return in both columns I and III. You will need to change the amounts in Column I to the amounts from your original tax return – Kentucky Form 740. 4.

Scroll down to the Income and Deductions section.

Enter the amounts below in Column I in the Income and Deductions section. Note: You will find these amounts on your original printed Kentucky tax return. If there is no amount in either column I or III for that line, still check to see if there was an amount on the original return.

5. Scroll down to the Tax Liability section.

Enter the amounts below in Column I in the Tax Liability section. Note: You will find these amounts on your original printed Kentucky tax return. If there is no amount in either column I or III for that line, still check to see if there was an amount on the original return. Line: Line 9 Line 10

Description: Family Size Tax Credit Education Tuition Tax Credit

Enter: Form 740, line 21 Form 740, line 23

6. Scroll down to Part III- Changes

7. Enter the following: “The original Kentucky return did not include the addition on Form 740, line 6 for the nontaxable IRA distribution to a charity. This amended return includes that IRA distribution as an addition to Kentucky taxable income.” Now it’s time to print and mail your amended return. Follow these steps: 1) On the toolbar, click on File and then Print

2) Choose All official forms required for filing 3) Uncheck the box for Form 1040: Individual 4) If necessary check the box for Kentucky Individual

5) Click Print button 6) The forms to mail to Kentucky will print. 7) The instructions will indicate any balance due that you need to pay or refund that you will receive. It will also include the address to mail the return. 8) Be sure to print out an extra copy to keep for your files.
