Kevin Mackey Bishop’s Gaiters 2013 CIS Coach of the Year Frank Tindall Trophy The 2012 Bishop’s Gaiters football season was one to forget. When all was said and done the team was winless and marred in controversy after head coach Kevin Mackey’s first season. The 2013 season will be a year that will not be soon forgotten. In the offseason Mackey made changes. Changes that were ultimately for the better. He took the reins of the defense, brought in a pair of new assistant coaches and got his team believing. The 34-year old led Bishop’s to their first six win season in two decades in 2013 (6-2). They also hosted their first playoff game since 1994 on Sat., Nov. 2. Throughout the 2013 campaign the Gaiters were a regular in the CIS top-10 finishing the year at No. 6 in the country, their highest ranking since 2010. They finished second in a tough Quebec conference where they were projected to be in the bottom two teams at the start of the year. Mackey’s efforts were recognized as he becomes one of the youngest coaches ever to win the Frank Tindall Trophy as CIS coach of the year. This comes two week after he was named RSEQ coach of the year. Bishop’s, a school with an enrollment of just 2400 students, also had three players named RSEQ all-stars and quarterback Jordan Heather won the Jeff Russel Trophy as the league’s player of the year and the Hec Crighton as the country’s most outstanding player. Heather and receiver Alexander Fox were both first-team allCanadians.

Kevin Mackey Bishop’s Gaiters 2013 CIS Coach of the Year Frank Tindall Trophy A native of Ascot Corner, Quebec, a suburb of Sherbrooke, Mackey grew up idolizing Gaiter football. He attended Alexander Galt Regional High School and went onto play with the Champlain Cougars. Football led him to London, Ont. where he had a four year playing career with the Western Mustangs before he returned to Bishop’s to play his fifth and final year. “What an honour this is, I wish we were in the Vanier cup though,” said Mackey. “You look at some of the legendary names on this list and I feel humbled to win. Our coaching staff has been unbelievable, this award definitely belongs to the team. We work well together and the players have really worked their butts off for us. This is really a Bishop’s football organization award, from the current players to the alumni to the support staff, everyone had a hand in our success.” Mackey becomes the third coach in Gaiters history to win the Frank Tindall Trophy. He joins a pair of legendary coaches in Bruce Coulter and Ian Breck as leaders of the purple and silver to win the award. “Kevin has done an outstanding job,” said Brian Breckles, Director of Athletics and Recreation at Bishop’s. “He has taken control of the program and worked hard to assem2013 REGULAR SEASON ble a great coaching staff to work with our players.
