Recruitment Reflection This past September, Beta Pi welcomed an incredible new pledge class of 36 women, meeting Panhellenic’s quota in terms of the new pledge class. The new pledge class instantly bonded with the whole house and has shown to be enjoying every aspect of Kappa life. They are a group of talented, hilarious, beautiful and genuine women that we are so proud to call our sisters.

The two weeks of work week and recruitment flew by and were full of great teamwork, bonding, and lots of laughter. Our retention rates remained high- reflecting the high moral and hard work from all of our members. This year we revamped our philanthropy day and introduced a craft and activity inspired by PC 07’ Kristy LeMond where we wrote on paper sunflowers with the PNMs something that brings us joy, makes us happy, challenges us, etc. and then we put them all together on a sheet covering the wall. After this day we experienced a record retention rate leading into preference day.

Running to Kappa with our new members after receiving their bid cards and my partner Elise Dunlap, the Reference Chairman, was the highlight of my time in Kappa. Formal Fall Recruitment 2016 was a wonderful experience that I will always cherish. – Laurel Jones, 2016 Membership Chairman.

Philanthropy Fun We organized and hosted 3 philanthropy events this year, benefiting 2 beloved organizations. Our first event consisted of a Krispy Kreme fundraiser in April, with full profits going towards purchasing books for our national philanthropy, Reading is Fundamental. In addition, we hosted our annual “Kristy’s Kickball” in honor of a member who passed from Sarcoma Cancer 3 years ago. We had 18 fraternities compete in a 3 day kickball tournament, pie-eating contest, and lip-sync battle. Our contribution totaled $2,000 with all proceeds benefiting the Northwest Sarcoma Foundation. Lastly, we hosted a “Reading is Fundamental” at Lowell Elementary this October. At this event we hosted a livereading, snack, and craft, in addition to purchasing over $500 in books for the students to take home. We worked with 75 students in hopes to encourage and inspire the passion for reading. In addition to philanthropy events, members spent time volunteering for the Ronald McDonald House, as well as the B+ Foundation. Once a month members went to the Ronald McDonald House to participate in themed activity nights, with kids and their families staying at the Ronald McDonald House. In addition, our chapter was lucky enough to be involved with the B+ Foundation for another year. For the second year, our chapter is paired with Madeline, a 7-yearold girl who is enduring cancer treatments. Our members love having outings, game nights, and ice cream dates with this sweet girl. -Maddie Watkins, 2016 Philanthropy Chairman

Social Events This year was a very exciting and fun filled year for the Beta Pi chapter. We started off our winter quarter of 2016 with the classic Sapphire Ball that was held in the Pacific Science Center! The actual venue had everything that you expect like a lot of dancing, laughing, a photo booth and of course great snacks. But on top of that this venue had a butterfly room! Kappas and their dates had so much fun playing with the butterflies in between dancing to their favorite jams. It was really a night to remember. To end the school year, we had another marvelous formal at the Tyee Yacht Club. This venue has become a crowd favorite because of how close it is to the water, meaning it has an amazing view of Lake Washington. The night was so clear that night some Kappas even managed to get the Space needle in the background of their pictures! The venue is also a blast because it has an entire wall that people can write on with highlighters. The wall has a black light that shines on it, so

everything that you write on it shines. Kappas and their dates got very

timeless Mariners grab-a-date, which was a great way to introduce our new PC16! Between the French fries, nachos and baseball we had a very enjoyable night. We had such a great year filled with countless memories and we cannot wait to see what 2017 holds in store for us.

Academics This past academic year, the Beta Pi chapter has achieved incredible success in the pursuit of academic excellence. For the entire 2016 school year, we were consistently ranked second in grades out of all nineteen sororities. Last autumn quarter, we had an overall chapter GPA of a 3.49, outcompeting the sorority average of a 3.40. At the beginning of every quarter, we start off with a formal scholarship dinner that is dedicated to recognizing the accomplishments of our members. In addition to rewarding the top scholars at the dinner, we also set goal GPA’s for the following academic term so that members can strive to achieve their goals. It has been a great year of academic success, and we cannot wait to see what else we can accomplish! -Cassy Quiring, 2017 Vice President Academic Excellence

A Letter From the President Hello! Before I go into the details of life as a UW Kappa and the wonderful qualities of all our women, I would like to introduce myself. My name is Becca Crabtree, I am a junior here at the University of Washington and I am proud to be the 2017 Chapter President of the Beta Pi Chapter. With my first quarter as president under my belt, I can truly say now more than ever, that everyday I am in awe of our members. All 134 women are constantly striving for new accomplishments, challenging the status quo, and finding her unique passions. Although we are a group of women with diverse interests, we never fail to love and support one another. It has been a very eventful year so far and we have lots of exciting things ahead, so I’d love to take this time to walk through what life is like this year as a UW kappa. At the beginning of the school year, we welcomed thirty-eight new exceptional women into our chapter after a successful formal fall recruitment. Since then, it has been incredible to not only see the connections they have already made, but also how involved they have become in our UW community.. We filled winter quarter with multiple fun events including our formal dance at Tyee Yacht Club and a Kappa Karaoke Grab-A-Date with the theme of “Jardy” aka an all jean party (if you didn’t know what jardy was, I promise you you’re not alone). We worked on empowering our members by bringing in educational speakers to address important topics like mental health, body-image, and sexual assault prevention and our members have become increasingly involved in the club “Greeks Take Action,” fighting for causes they believe in. As winter quarter ends and spring quarter begins, not only are we looking forward to sunnier weather (hopefully), but we are also extremely excited about all of the upcoming events and opportunities that come with spring quarter. Parent’s Weekend is quickly approaching and we’re gearing up for all the fun events we have planned. This quarter we have multiple philanthropic events coming up including our fourth annual Kristy’s Kickball tournament to raise money for the Kristy Lemond Scholarship Fund and the Northwest Sarcoma Foundation’s annual walk to help efforts against sarcoma. While we are saddened by the fact that we’ll be saying goodbye to our fun-loving seniors, we’re excited to see all the wonderful things they’ll do after graduation.

Kappa’s motto of “aspire to be” continues to represent our members to a tee. While balancing academics, internships, family commitments, and Kappa, our members still find time to support each other unconditionally. Every day we learn new things about each other and help each other grow. We challenge each other with our differences but ultimately push each other to be more empathic and well-rounded women. Not a day goes by that I am not inspired by the determination and kindness shown by our members, and I am truly lucky to call them my friends. I don’t think there will ever be another time in my life when I am surrounded 134 loyal and resilient women. I am grateful for the amazing family members who raised our members to be the incredible women they are today and for the alumni who continue to support us and help us reach new heights. So whether you are a parent of an active member or an alumna - thank you.

Loyally,

Rebecca Crabtree Beta Pi Chapter President
