Improvement Needs in MSC-‐C Fisheries l

Sustainable Fisheries Partnership
FIPs/improvements should be carried out in fisheries un4l they can reach the level of an uncondi4onal pass if applied to the MSC standards. Nearly all fisheries ini4ally cer4fied to the MSC standards have condi4ons (i.e., improvement needs) 4ed to them. FIPs provided a structured and transparent way to close out MSC condi4ons. Example: Barents Sea cod/haddock

Sustainable Fisheries Partnership
Many fisheries below minimum biomass levels, or the levels at which good recruitment is expected. Recovery experiences and available data indicate all these fisheries could rebuild if managed appropriately. No fishery above minimum requirements for all management quality scores has low biomass or too high fishing mortality: i.e., if you apply basic management best prac4ces, they will work.

Sustainable Fisheries Partnership
St Pierre Bank (3Ps): currently best available Canadian / US source. Ensure beUer health con4nues, and stock recovers towards target levels. Newfoundland (2J3KL): S4ll at historically low levels, but some early signs of rebuilding. Ensure recovery con4nues and leads back to full health. Requires government support to catch sector to maintain offshore moratorium / keep F low, un4l SSB recovers or strong year classes recruit to the fishery. Same for other historically smaller Canadian and US stocks

Condi=ons for Reopening/Sourcing
Ini4ate/join FIP to look at appropriate condi4ons for resuming fishing

Sustainable Fisheries Partnership
Biomass should be above levels needed for healthy breeding and new recruitment Maybe, if a huge yearclass is confirmed, fishery can responsibly reopen at a lower biomass level
If a fishery reopens before rebuilding above minimum levels, avoid sourcing un4l rebuilding is more advanced 6
