THE BIBLE MEETS LIFE: Being responsible for what God has entrusted us with isn’t always easy and spending money wisely can be a challenge. But God’s purpose for our finances is greater than just meeting our needs. How we spend what we have can speak volumes about our relationship with Jesus. The Bible calls us into a wise plan for giving, a course of action that can make us all better stewards of our money.

EXODUS 35:4-35
God spoke to Moses. “I want you to build a tabernacle where My people can worship Me. Take an offering from all of the people. Tell them what to bring.” Moses spoke to the people. He said, “We must bring offerings to help build the tabernacle.” Moses told the people what to bring. The people listened to Moses. Some brought all kinds of gold, silver, and gemstones. Some brought red, blue, and purple yarn; fine linen; and animal skins. Others brought wood, oil, and spices. Every part of the offering was needed for building the tabernacle. God chose craftsmen who could work with all the materials the people had brought. They would design and make everything for the tabernacle. LIVE IT OUT: Choose a simple recipe for a favorite treat (such as trail mix). Assign each child the responsibility of adding an ingredient to the bowl. Talk about how important each item is to making the recipe taste good and how you are working together to build the snack. Remind your child that the people in the Bible worked together to build the tabernacle.

EXODUS 36:1–39:31
The people God had given ability came to work. Moses gave them the offerings the people brought. The people kept bringing offerings to the workers. Soon the people had brought so many offerings that Moses had to tell them to stop. The workers used the fabric and yarn to make special curtains. Workers made the golden box called the ark. They made a table, a lampstand, and altars. They made special clothing for the priests. The clothes even had real jewels! Finally, everything was ready. Now the tabernacle could be built. LIVE IT OUT: Kids can be part of the financial investment of building or maintaining their church facilities. Create a special bank for family members to contribute money that will be given to the church to help pay for or help maintain the church’s buildings.

THE POINT: Be ready to give as the need arises. • Discuss budgeting with your student. Talk about your strengths and weaknesses in budgeting and finances. Have a conversation around this quote: “The greatest use of life is to spend it for something that will outlast it.”1 —William James

LIVE IT OUT: Your student has been encouraged to do one or both Live It Out activities in the Personal Study Guide. If your student chooses to do Good Stewardship: • Work with your student as he or she develops a budget. • Offer your student the chance to give input on the budget decisions you make for the whole family. If your student chooses to do Adopt a Need: • Ask your student what he or she is thinking about adopting as a need to meet. • Determine to help your student be consistent in the commitment he or she has made.
