August 1, 2016 Dear Students and Parents of Students of the Class of 2020: In just over a month the Class of 2020 will begin their freshmen year as Papermakers at Kimberly High School. We have found that the transition from middle school to high school can be both exciting and challenging for students and parents. In this mailing we have included some ideas and suggestions from parents and the Class of 2019 to help ease the transition. 1. 2. 3.

Learn your way around the building. Attend registration and feel free to visit often after August 16th so you can find your way around. The school is open from 7:30 to 2:30. While you are here bring in the supplies and other items you will be putting in your locker, it will save on the commotion of the first day of school. Basic supplies for classes are detailed in the Welcome Letters section on the school website. To access this go to www.kimberly.k12.wi.us and click on Kimberly High School then Staff and Welcome Letters. Plan time for homework. Students should strive to be self-advocates. Encourage your son or daughter to take the lead in talking with teachers or coaches when questions or issues arise. Remember it is easier to raise your grade point average as a freshman than it is as a junior. Don’t worry about harassment or hazing. We deal with any issues quickly and strictly! So report any concerns. Get to class a few minutes early. You will get to know your teacher. Parents should attempt to remain connected to school. Attend conferences, meetings, and events. Please read the school newsletters that will be posted to the website and follow us on Twitter at @khsmakers and on Facebook. Attend dances and school events. You will meet new friends. Join something! Studies show students who are involved in clubs, the arts, or sports earn higher grades. Read through the KHS question and answer booklet. All Freshmen should attend the Freshman Welcome Program on August 31st at 8:00 am Parents should attend the Parent Welcome Program on August 31st. The Clubs and Activities Fair will begin at 6 and the Parent Meeting at 6:30.

Unedited Advice from current students: Join clubs to meet new people and have fun don't stress too much, but get your work done. There is a lot more homework and you need to do a lot more studying. Surround yourself with good influences. High school is not as fun and cool as some people say it is unless you make it fun. This is high school, so you will get more homework, so find a good way of managing your time and make sure you study for tests. Be open minded!! Do what you want to do and what you're interested in no matter what, because I guarantee you there will be someone else with the same interest. Talk to a lot of people, even saying hello in the hall is an amazing thing. Don't judge people, all they want to do is go to school. Don't get caught up in the drama. Don't let it ruin your life. Just let it go and try to enjoy life. Don't sweat the small stuff, get involved, and have fun. Drop out of high school as soon as you can. Being a middle aged man/woman living in your parents' basement is much more preferable than enduring four years of suffering. (We said these were unedited……)
