Know Your Bible! BOOK OF 2 JOHN (The Shortest Book in the Bible!) Authors: According to church tradition, the apostle John get’s the nod, but in the book itself the author is identified as “the elder” (1:1). Date: Approximately 92 AD. In Ten Words or Less: Beware false teachers who deny Jesus’ physical life on earth. Details Please: Addressed to “the elect lady and her children” (1:1), perhaps an actual family or, figuratively speaking, a church, 2 John tackles the heretical idea that Jesus had not been physically present on earth. The letter may be a reaction to the “gnostics,” who taught that Jesus was spirit only and that He just appeared to suffer and die on the cross. This teaching, of “a deceiver and an antichrist” (1:7) should be avoided at all costs—to the point of barring one’s door against those who believe it (1:10). Quotable: “But now, dear lady, I ask you, not as though I were writing you a new commandment, but one we have had from the beginning, let us love one another.” (1:5) Unique and Unusual: Second John is one of the New Testament’s four singlechapter books, and is the shortest by verse count of all books at thirteen. So What? The world today is much like that of Habakkuk’s day. It remains full of violence and injustice, but God is still in control. Whether we sense it or not, He’s working out His own purposes in the world. —Some material from Know Your Bible, published by Barbour Publishing, Inc. Used by permission.
