‘Student Parliament’
Announcement of the Student Parliament in Mathrubhumi Daily
• Mathrubhumi in association with VKC, a leading footwear manufacture in the country organized a Student Parliament with vision of ‘Garbage free Kerala’. • As the first level of the initiative a Project presentation competition was organized for the school students. In the competition, the students presented their ideas for making Kerala clean and green.
District Level Presentations • Students presented their waste management projects in front of a panel of experts. • The ten minute presentations were valued by the jury panel and five best individual projects were selected from all the 14 districts.

Grooming Sessions • Special grooming sessions were conducted for the five students selected from the respective district level competition. • Experts from the field of waste management, Government officials, NGOs, Universities and environmentalists conducted training for the students to fine tune their waste management projects.

Student Parliament • the final round of Student parliament was conducted on 27th December 2016 at Trivandrum. The 5 member team of district level winners represented their respective districts at the state level. • Teams presented their ideas for a clean Kerala in front of the State Ministers, Govt. officials and the jury panel. • The best three teams were awarded with Cash prizes, mementos and certificates.

Young Parliamentarians with Chief Minister • The recommendations and findings of Student Parliament were handed over to Mr. Pinarayi Vijayan, Hon’ble Chief Minister of Kerala. • He promissed the students that the recommendations and ideas proposed by the student Parliament will be studied and best projects will be implemented by the Government of Kerala.
Important Recommendations • Doing it in the right way - Awareness creation for the waste management methods • At the source - Decentralized waste management methods for households • Water safety – Protection of water sources with the help of civil bodies • Non-bio waste management – Special Waste collection centers for plastic and chemical waste within every Kilo Meter. • Agriculture and waste management – schemes for Integrating organic farming and waste management. • Recycling – Promotion of recycling of various waste materials • Reduce Plastic – Laws to control plastic carry bags and bottles • Community Plants – For sharing biogas plants between households • Green tourism – To reduce pollution in connection with tourism • E Waste – Importance to E waste management methods
