2006 RECAP The Oswego State men’s soccer team continued to show vast improvement under second-year head coach Robert Friske. The Lakers once again qualified for the SUNYAC Playoffs, and finished the season with an 11-9-1 overall record. It was the first winning season for Oswego State since the 2000 season, thus ranking the Lakers as one of the top-20 most improved Division III men’s soccer teams in the nation, as determined by the NCAA.

Oswego State made some noise in the post-season with a 1-0 SUNYAC Play-In Round win at Brockport. Mike Davis ‘07 scored the lone goal early in the second half. The Lakers then bowed out in the semifinals with a 1-0 loss to top-seed and eventual tournament champions Geneseo. Oswego State was also invited to participate in the ECAC Upstate Tournament.

2007 PREVIEW The Oswego State men’s soccer team looks to continue its momentum in the 2007 season and will face a difficult schedule both outside of the conference and in SUNYAC play. Oswego State returns 14 players from last year’s team including junior co-captains Michael Roorda and Scott Vanoostveen. Other returners that saw significant playing time in 2006 include goalkeeper Shaun Sessa, defenders Jordon LeBrun and Jeremy Scott, midfielders Steven Tracy, Craig Nazaré, and Chris Carra, and forwards Greg Blette and Mike Kincaid. The Lakers also have 11 newcomers on the roster, including nine freshmen and two transfers.

Oswego State plays its first five games away from home, opening at the difficult Flower City Classic hosted by the University of Rochester. The Lakers first home match won’t get any easier as they host Oneonta on Laker Field on Sept. 15. Oneonta, a provisional member of the SUNYAC, is a former Division I program and the Red Dragons defeated the Lakers in last year’s ECAC Upstate Tournament. The Lakers will also play road games against perennial SUNYAC powers Plattsburgh and Fredonia. Oswego State hosts defending SUNYAC champion Geneseo on Oct. 12 at 4 p.m.

Bob Friske Head Coach, 3rd year Irondequoit, New York
Coach Robert Friske graduated from Plattsburgh State with a degree in Business and a minor in Athletic Coaching. While at Plattsburgh, he was a four-year defender for the Cardinals. He later earned a Master’s Degree from SUNY Brockport majoring in Athletic Administration. He has also earned his national coaching license from the National Soccer Coaching Association of America. In Vermont, Friske guided the Olympic Development Program as President. Coach Friske previously coached men’s soccer at Keuka College and Norwich University. He guided Norwich to an undefeated regular season and 3 NCAA Tournament appearances. The 2007 Oswego Laker season marks the 12th year for Friske as a collegiate varsity head soccer coach. With a career record of 126-89-7, he has directed his teams to eight straight conference tournament appearances, six conference tournament championship appearances, and five conference titles.

Jeff Baum Assistant Coach, 1st year • Oswego, New York Coach Jeff Baum has been coaching soccer since the early 1980’s. He is the former founder and director of Mexico Youth Soccer in Mexico, NY. His high school coaching career consists of coaching various varsity boys and girls teams. His girls’ teams include the former Bishop Cunningham High School and Mexico High School. He also spent many years as the Boys Varsity coach at Mexico High School. Currently, he coaches a local boy’s team and is on the Oswego Youth Soccer board. A graduate of Oswego State in 1983, he holds a degree in Elementary Education with a minor in Athletic Coaching. He earned a Masters of Science in 1987 from Oswego. Jeff currently holds a USSF class “D” license. He resides in Oswego with his wife, Terry and 2 children.
Pat Hurley Assistant Coach, 1st year • Center Moriches, New York Pat comes to Oswego with a lot of college experience. Pat played his high school soccer at Center Moriches High School in New York. While there, he was a 2 time All League Conference player and was named All-County his senior year. Pat spent 2 years at Southern Connecticut State University. His team appeared in the NCAA those years. Pat came to Oswego State as a player in his junior year where he was a 2 year starter and captain. He led Oswego to 2 conference tournament appearances. Pat was named to the All Conference Team as well as All Tournament Team. Currently, Pat is a Technology Education major.
Byron McMichael Assistant Goalkeeper Coach, 1st year • Kinderhook, New York Byron is a former goalkeeper at Oswego State. Previously, at Icabod Crane High School, Byron was named to the 1st team Patroon All Conference, Section 2 All League 1st Team, Class A Goalkeeper of the Year and 3rd team All State. Currently, Byron is a Meteorology and Mathematics major.

Greg Blette Sophomore Midfielder/Forward Lake View, New York
Career Highlights Greg played in all 21 games and started an impressive 17. As a freshman he had 3 goals, one of which was an impressive game winner against SUNY Morrisville.
Before Oswego Greg was a 4 year player and 3 year starter at Frontier High School. During his last two years he was named captain. In his junior year, Greg was named to the ECIC 2nd Team. Greg’s senior year was equally as successful as he was named to the ECIC 1st Team and earned the Daryl J. Krentz Award for Outstanding Senior Soccer Player. Greg played travel soccer with the Hamburg Soccer Club and Buffalo United Premier.
Coaches Comments “Greg is a strong central player who can move the ball around all over the field. He is able to score goals and is a very good defender. He is dangerous both offensively and defensively in the air. We are looking for Greg to continue to be an important part of our offense and defense.”

Jeff Bryce Senior Midfielder/Forward Clay, New York
Career Highlights Jeff did not participate in 2006 due to an injury. He has played in 22 games in his 2 years as an Oswego State Laker.
Before Oswego Jeff played his high school soccer at nearby CiceroNorth Syracuse High School. During 2005 and 2006, Jeff was part of the Open Men’s Empire State Games. In 2005, he was an alternate and won a spot on the final roster in 2006. Jeff plays for the Northstars Soccer Club.

Chris Carra Sophomore Midfielder/Defender Endwell, New York
Career Highlights Chris played in all 21 games and started 14. As a freshman 2 of his 3 goals were game winners, one of which was an impressive blast against SUNY New Paltz.
Before Oswego Chris was a 3 year varsity player and starter for Maine-Endwell High School. In his senior year he was a captain and was named to the Southern Tier Athletic Conference (STAC) All-Division team in 2005. Chris helped his team to a Class “A” Championship in 2004 and a trip to the State Regional game as well as STAC Title game in 2003. Chris’ travel club team the B.C United Fusion were State Cup Finalists for 4 consecutive years.

Michael Kincaid Sophomore Forward Amsterdam, NL
Career Highlights Michael scored 5 goals for us last year as a freshman. His goal against SUNY New Paltz was one of the biggest. This goal tied the game for Oswego State which eventually was won by the Lakers in overtime.
Before Oswego Michael played his high school soccer at AFNORTH International School in the Netherlands where he was a 4 year varsity starter and captain the last 3 years. During that career, he scored 54 goals while providing 34 assists. Michael earned 1st team All Conference in 2004 and 2005. He was also named to the All Europe 2nd Team in 2004 and 1st team in 2005. In 2005, he received his teams Most Valuable Player Award. While in the United States, Michael was on the Olympic Development Program 87’s team during 2001-2003.

Jordon LeBrun Sophomore Defender Whitby, Ontario, Canada
Career Highlights Jordan played in 14 games as a freshman.
Before Oswego Jordon played and started 3 years of soccer at Father Leo J. Austin Catholic Secondary School in Canada. During that career he totaled 13 goals and 20 assists. Jordon’s teams were credited with Lake Ontario Secondary School Athletics (LOSSA) Regional Champions in 2004 and 2005. They also advanced to the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Association Quarter-Finals in 2004 and 2005. His travel team has played in the Canadian Super Y-League and O.Y.S.L. for the Toronto Jr. Lynx and Woodbridge Strikers 88’s. In 2002 playing for the Oshawa Kicks he was a silver-medalist in the USA Cup Final. Jordon currently plays for the Ajax Gunners PU-21E in the O.S.L.

Career Highlights Nick had a quality win versus SUNY Morrisville in 2006.
Before Oswego Nick played his high school soccer at Arlington High School where he was a 2 year varsity player and a starter in his senior year. In 2004-2005 his team earned league titles. He was name as an All-League selection in 2005. Nick’s talents had him playing for the Olympic Development Program 88’s for 1 year. His travel team was the F.C. Westchester 88’s and has also played in the Super Y League for the Westchester Flames.

Craig Nazaré Junior Forward/Midfield Oakville, Ontario Canada
Career Highlights In his two years as a Laker, Craig has played in 36 games and started 10, scoring 4 goals and 3 assists.
Before Oswego Craig previously played his high school soccer at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Secondary School in Canada. While there he was a 4 year letterman and starter. During his time playing soccer, he scored 23 goals for a team that was the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations (OFSAA) 2004 Champion and the 2005 Runner Up. During his senior year, Craig was his teams Most Valuable Player. Craig’s travel clubs included the Oakville Black Dragons and Mississauga Falcons that are a part of the Ontario Youth Soccer League (OYSL) and the Ontario Soccer League (OSL). He was named Most Valuable Player for goals scored with his Oakville Black Dragons team.

Justin Pangie Senior Midfielder/Forward Ballston Spa, New York
Career Highlights Justin did not play in 2005 and much of 2006 due to injury. He has played in 8 games in his two years as a Laker.
Before Oswego Justin played soccer at Burnt HillsBallston Lake Central Schools. He was named the Most Improved Player for his Junior Varsity team. He has played travel soccer for the Capital United Club team in the Capital District Youth Soccer League. He was named captain for that team. As a junior and senior, Justin realized his running potential and became a cross country runner. He qualified for the State Meet in 2001 and 2002 where he finished 22nd and 50th. He was named Most Valuable Player each year.

Michael Roorda Junior Midfielder Rochester, New York
Career Highlights His game winning goal against St. John Fisher in October 2006 helped the Oswego State Lakers earn a berth into the ECAC Tournament. Michael played in 40 games over the last two years and was a starter in 20 games.
Before Oswego Michael played his high school soccer at Aquinas Institute High School. He is a two time letterman earning a captain’s role in his senior year. In 2003, Michael was a member of the Section V Class B Champion team and was a New York State Class B Champion. During his 2 years of varsity play, his team’s record was 41-1-2. Michael received many awards during his years in high school. He earned the Most Improved Varsity player in his junior year, Coaches Award and the City/Catholic League Honorable Mention team award his senior year. Michael has played for the Chili Fire in the Rochester District Youth Soccer League (RDYSL).

Career Highlights Christopher played in 3 games and started in one as a freshman.
Before Oswego Christopher played his high school soccer at Taconic Hills High School. While a member of this team, he was a 4 year letterman, starter and captain the last two. In 2004, his team earned the Conference Champion title and was a Section II Finalist. Christopher’s play his last 2 years earned him 1st Team All-Conference. As a senior, he received an All-Section award.

Jeremy Scott Junior Defender Newburgh, New York
Career Highlights In two years of college soccer, Jeremy played in 29 games and started 17.
Before Oswego Jeremy played soccer for Newburgh Free Academy High School. He was a 4 year letterman, 3 year starter and captain his senior year. His 2005 team earned the title of Section IX Champion. Jeremy earned the Most Valuable Player award and was named the 2005 Newburgh Lions Award for Overall Athlete in Newburgh. Jeremy’s travel team was the Cornwall Shooters.
Coaches Comments “Jeremy is a solid defender who can also play in the midfield. He is good in the air as well as steps to the ball and tackles hard. We are looking for Jeremy to help anchor our defense and supply some timely runs to goal. He is a very good defender that can go to goal.”

Shaun Sessa Senior Goalie Ronkonkoma, New York
Career Highlights Shaun started in 20 games. As a first year college transfer he earned 9 wins, 3 of which were shutouts. His hard work and athletic ability help the Oswego State Lakers cut its goals against average in half from 2005 to 2006.
Before Oswego Shaun was a 2 year letterman and starter for New York’s Sachem High School. In 29 games, Shaun had 184 saves and 7 shutouts. That play provided him the opportunity to participate in the Suffolk County Exceptional Senior game. During the spring and summer sessions, Shaun played in the Long Island Junior “Division One” League for the Sachem Jaguars. In 2003, Shaun was chosen to play in the Empire State Games for the Long Island Region, but was unable to play due to an injury. Previously, Shaun played Junior College at Suffolk County Community College where his team had an excellent record of 13-3-1. During that season, Shaun recorded 7 shutouts with a .56 goals against average.
Coaches Comments “Shaun is a technical goalkeeper with very good athletic ability. He plays big in goal for the Lakers and when he is on, he can get to anything. We are looking for Shaun to continue his commitment to excellence in goal and to take our team’s defensive development to another level.”

Steve Tracy Junior Defender Vilseck, Germany
Career Highlights In two years since Steve’s arrival at Oswego State he has played in 31 games and started 10.
Before Oswego Steven played his soccer at Vilseck-American High School in Vilseck, Germany. He lettered in Varsity Men’s soccer during his freshman year. In 2004 and 2005 Steven led his team as a captain while Vilseck appeared in the All European championships. During that time, he was an award recipient for the All European team. Steven was also a football player where he was named co-captain of the Vilseck Falcon’s Varsity Football team. He led this team to a Division II All European conference semi-final appearance in 2004 and 2005. He was also awarded All Conference, Division II football kicker in 2004 and All Conference, Division II running back and kicker in 2005. He earned his teams most valuable Offensive Player of the Year for 2005.
Coaches Comments “Steve is a solid player that can play multiple positions. He reads the field well and distributes with accuracy. We are looking for Steve to make an impact while on the field. Steve can easily win air balls and defend well along with being a precision passer with a nice strike on the ball.”

Career Highlights Scott played in 37 games and started 25 in his two years as a Laker.
Before Oswego Scott comes to the United States after playing his high school ball at Beacon Christian Secondary School in Canada. For this team, he was a 4 year letterman and starter. During his last 2 years he proved he was a leader by being named captain. In the off season, Scott plays outside midfield for St. Catherines Roma of the Provincial Under 21 West League.

John played 1 year as a starter for the Shaker High School soccer team in Latham, New York. As part of his high school accomplishments, he participated in the Capital District Selection College Showcase. During the other seasons of the year, John has played for East Greenbush Gladiators, Blackwatch and Shenentaha. Playing for these teams has provided him with various outstanding opportunities such as: a State Cup Championship, a Snicker Regional Tournament bid, a US Club Soccer National Finalist, a Super Y Championship in the New England Division, and an Eastern New York Soccer Association Championship.

Ryan was a 3 year player and starter for Wayne Central High School in Ontario Center, NY which won the Finger Lakes East Championship each of those years. While there his last 2 years, he was a team captain for the number 1 ranked class “A” team in New York State. Ryan received the All Greater Rochester Honorable Mention Award for 2 years and participated in the Section 5 All-Star/Senior game. He has also played for the Webster Soccer Association and Rochester Futbol Club. Those teams played in the prestigious Rochester District Youth Soccer League (RDYSL) Division 1 and Upstate Premier League where they were champions in the Clifton Park, Brockport and Webster Tournament.

Felipe played his high school soccer at Ichabod Crane High School in Valatie, New York. While there he was a 3 year varsity starter. He was named captain his senior year. During Felipe’s career he was credited with 45 goals and 50 assists. His senior year team was named the Patroon Conference Champion. Felipe made 2nd team all star status his sophomore year and earned 1st team all league his junior and senior year. He also achieved the “Player of the Year” runner up award. In the off season, Felipe played for the Detroit Crane Shenentawa in the Capital District’s (CDYSL) Division II and Premier League.

Freshman Midfielder • Freeport, New York
German was hooked on soccer at age 4 in Flushing Meadow Park with the Inca’s from Queens. He was a 4 year varsity player and senior starter at Freeport High School in Freeport, NY. As a midfielder he scored 4 goals and contributed 10 assists for the 2005 AA II Conference Champions. He has been inducted on the Freeport High School Wall of Fame, named 2006 AA I All Conference Player, and participated on the Nassau County Exceptional Senior Team. German also plays for Freeport United in the LIJSL Division One. His teams were Waldbaums Cup Finalist, 2004 Division IV Champions, and 2005 Division III Champions. German also participated on the 2005 Long Island Olympic Development Team (ODP).

Dean was a 4 year starter playing for Mechanicville High School in Mechanicville, New York. During his last 3 years he was named captain for a team that won the 2005 Class C Sectional Championship. Dean tallied 28 goals during those years. Some of his accomplishment include: Capital District Youth Soccer League Scholarship Award, Soccer Booster Club Award, MVP Defense Award, Colonial Council All Star, Honorable Mention & 2nd Team Colonial Council All Star, 1st Team Defender 2004 All Area Boys Soccer Team, and Athlete of the Week. Dean has played for Mechanicville Stillwater United Soccer Club (MSUSC) and was a member of the 2005 Olympic Development Program (ODP).

Steve was a former 3 year defensive starter for Newfield High School in Newfield, New York. During his senior year in 2006, he scored 2 goals and contributed 3 assists. He was named All League and was named the team’s Most Dedicated Player. Steve also plays for the Newfield Saints in the Long Island Junior Soccer League (LIJSL). With that team, he was captain of the U-17 Division 1 Champions.

Jonathan Kuracina played for Bayridge Secondary School in Kingston, Ontario, Canada. Jonathan was a 2 year varsity player and starter during his junior and senior year. During that time, his teams earned a 3rd and 4th place finish for the Eastern Ontario Secondary Schools Athletic Association (EOSSAA) division. They also earned a 5th place finish in the Ontarian Federation of School Athletic Association (OFSAA) division. Jonathon’s career statistics include 15 goals and 14 assists. In the off season, Jonathon plays for the Cataraqui Clippers in the U-18 Regional division. His team was an Ontario Cup Semi Finalists.

Ben’s high school soccer was played at 2 different schools. He played for Trenton High School and Afnorth International High School in the Netherlands. He was a 3 year varsity starter and was named captain his senior year. His teams earned many awards including: Bay of Quinte Champs, COSSA Champs, Conference Champions D2 in 2006 and a 3rd Place Europeans Ramstein in 2006. In 2006, Ben was named the Defensive Player of the Year and was on the All-Conference team D2. In the off season, Ben plays for the De Ster team in the 3e Klasse League. Ben played 12 years in Canada, 1 year in Germany and another year in the Netherlands.

Tom played his high school soccer at Broadalbin-Perth High School in Broadalbin, New York. He was a 4 year starter and 2 year captain his last 2 years. He scored 30 goals and contributed with 60 assists. He was a Section II first team All-Star in 2003 and 2004. Tom was also the Foothill leagues Most Valuable Player in 2004 and was 4th Team All-State. In Junior College at SUNY Cobleskill, he scored 4 goals and had 12 assists. He was credited with scoring a quick goal in 11 seconds and matched that by doing it again the same year. In the off season, Tom plays for the Shenentaha Mad Dogs in the Premier Division

ABOUT SUNY OSWEGO History Oswego State has a history of competition on and off the field with dedicated studentathletes. The college was created in 1861 as a teacher-training institution and was a founding member of the State University of New York’s statewide system in 1948. Academics Oswego offers some of the best academic and athletic support programs in Division III for its student-athletes, including sponsorship of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) and Student-Athlete Mentor (SAM) programs. Oswego is proud to have developed one of the leading NCAA Challenging Athletic Minds for Personal Success (CHAMPS)/Life Skills programs. Environment Oswego’s 8,300 students enjoy the scenic 690-acre campus along the shores of historic Lake Ontario. The city of Oswego offers the combination of small-town ambiance and big-city proximity, as it is about one hour from Rochester and 45 minutes from Syracuse. Facilities The varsity athletic facilities include the Campus Center, Laker Hall and the South Athletic Complex providing homes for the school’s 24 intercollegiate teams. Oswego competes in Division III with affiliations with the NCAA and the State University of New York Athletic Conference, the Eastern College Athletic Conference and the New York State Women’s Collegiate Athletic Association.

Fast Facts SUNY Oswego enrolls about 8,200 students, 6,600 of them full-time undergraduates. About 3,880 students live on campus among the college’s 12 residence halls. Overall, Oswego’s lakeside campus stretches for almost 700 acres and includes 45 buildings. More than half (55 percent) of Oswego’s students major in disciplines within the College of Arts and Sciences, which emphasizes a traditional liberal studies curriculum as well as some professional tracks. The School of Education (28 percent of student majors) and School of Business (17 percent) offer more specific profession-oriented training. SUNY Oswego provides more than $2.5 million in merit-based scholarship money. Additional annual funding of more than $65 million in need-based grants, loans and work-study awards also support student attendance at Oswego. LAKERS IN THE CLASSROOM Oswego State student-athletes receive numerous academic honors and awards. SUNYAC Commissioner’s List The SUNYAC Commissioner’s List recognizes student-athletes who have achieved a cumulative grade-point average of 3.3 or higher and have been at Oswego State for at least three semesters. SUNYAC All-Academic Teams The SUNYAC All-Academic Teams recognize student-athletes who have achieved a semester grade-point average of 3.3 or higher. Award for Academic Excellence Oswego State student-athletes who have maintained a cumulative grade-point average of 3.0 or greater annually receive the Academic Award for Excellence. Special Individual Awards Special individual awards -- including the Donald Snygg Award and Oswego Woman Scholar Athlete Award -- are also presented annually. Mentors Oswego State student-athletes are supported academically and athletically by a dedicated group of faculty mentors. One faculty mentor is assigned to each team.
CHAMPS/Life Skills Today’s student-athletes are faced with many challenges both on and off the playing field. High expectations face each student-athlete and create demands which challenge his or her athletic, academic and emotional capabilities. With this in mind, the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) created a program to assist student-athletes in acquiring the education and experiences necessary for success in virtually every aspect of life. Developed in 1994, the Challenging Athletic Minds for Personal Success (CHAMPS)/Life Skills Program has taken root at Oswego State and more than 400 other colleges and universities. Oswego State has incorporated CHAMPS/Life Skills into its Oswego Athletes Striving to Incorporate Skills for Success (OASIS) program since 1996. It consists of the following five commitment areas: athletic excellence, academic excellence, personal development, career development and service The mission of the program is to reach each student-athlete based on his or her individual needs while concentrating on the overall development of a whole, wellrounded person. FACILITIES Athletics at Oswego has always been a vital part of campus life... the Lakers’ outstanding competitive facilities have served the athletics program well.
Laker Hall Oswego’s primary indoor facility is Laker Hall, built in 1968, which serves as the home of the Oswego State athletic department. Within Laker Hall is the 3,500-seat Max Ziel Gymnasium, named for the Lakers’ former department chair and coach. The Max Ziel gym hosts the men’s and women’s basketball, women’s volleyball, and men’s wrestling programs. This gymnasium has three full-length basketball courts that can be used for volleyball. Laker Hall also includes an auxiliary gym used by many Oswego State programs. Laker Hall also holds the Laker Pool, complete with six lanes and separate diving well. The Oswego State wrestling program has a 40-foot by 80-foot practice area with two regulation practice circles. A new, renovated weight training room, with expanded workout facilities and equipment for the varsity teams, opened this fall to service the college’s commitment to the well-being and readiness of studentathletes. Laker Hall also hosts recreational facilities for racquetball and squash.

The Campus Center The convocation center/ice arena in the brand-new Campus Center hosts the men’s and women’s ice hockey programs. This state-of-the-art facility opened in October 2006. The Campus Center complex represents the new social hub of campus, connecting with renovated Swetman and Poucher halls.

Oswego’s outdoor facilities are extensive. The Laker Field complex adjacent to Laker and Romney includes game and practice fields for baseball, softball, track and field, field hockey, soccer, and lacrosse. It also includes six tennis courts used by both the men’s and women’s programs.

Under the direction of Oswego States Men’s Soccer Coach Robert Friske participants will be offered programs designed to develop young players in all facets of the game. 2006 RECAP The Oswego State men’s soccer team continued to show vast improvement under second-year head coach Robert Friske. The Lakers once again qualified for the SUNYAC Playoffs, and finished the season with an 11-9-1 overall record. It was the first winning season for Oswego State since the 2000 season, thus ranking the Lakers as one of the top-20 most improved Division III men’s soccer teams in the nation, as determined by the NCAA.

Oswego State made some noise in the post-season with a 1-0 SUNYAC Play-In Round win at Brockport. Mike Davis ‘07 scored the lone goal early in the second half. The Lakers then bowed out in the semifinals with a 1-0 loss to top-seed and eventual tournament champions Geneseo. Oswego State was also invited to participate in the ECAC Upstate Tournament.

2007 PREVIEW The Oswego State men’s soccer team looks to continue its momentum in the 2007 season and will face a difficult schedule both outside of the conference and in SUNYAC play. Oswego State returns 14 players from last year’s team including junior co-captains Michael Roorda and Scott Vanoostveen. Other returners that saw significant playing time in 2006 include goalkeeper Shaun Sessa, defenders Jordon LeBrun and Jeremy Scott, midfielders Steven Tracy, Craig Nazaré, and Chris Carra, and forwards Greg Blette and Mike Kincaid. The Lakers also have 11 newcomers on the roster, including nine freshmen and two transfers.

Oswego State plays its first five games away from home, opening at the difficult Flower City Classic hosted by the University of Rochester. The Lakers first home match won’t get any easier as they host Oneonta on Laker Field on Sept. 15. Oneonta, a provisional member of the SUNYAC, is a former Division I program and the Red Dragons defeated the Lakers in last year’s ECAC Upstate Tournament. The Lakers will also play road games against perennial SUNYAC powers Plattsburgh and Fredonia. Oswego State hosts defending SUNYAC champion Geneseo on Oct. 12 at 4 p.m.

Bob Friske Head Coach, 3rd year Irondequoit, New York
Coach Robert Friske graduated from Plattsburgh State with a degree in Business and a minor in Athletic Coaching. While at Plattsburgh, he was a four-year defender for the Cardinals. He later earned a Master’s Degree from SUNY Brockport majoring in Athletic Administration. He has also earned his national coaching license from the National Soccer Coaching Association of America. In Vermont, Friske guided the Olympic Development Program as President. Coach Friske previously coached men’s soccer at Keuka College and Norwich University. He guided Norwich to an undefeated regular season and 3 NCAA Tournament appearances. The 2007 Oswego Laker season marks the 12th year for Friske as a collegiate varsity head soccer coach. With a career record of 126-89-7, he has directed his teams to eight straight conference tournament appearances, six conference tournament championship appearances, and five conference titles.

Jeff Baum Assistant Coach, 1st year • Oswego, New York Coach Jeff Baum has been coaching soccer since the early 1980’s. He is the former founder and director of Mexico Youth Soccer in Mexico, NY. His high school coaching career consists of coaching various varsity boys and girls teams. His girls’ teams include the former Bishop Cunningham High School and Mexico High School. He also spent many years as the Boys Varsity coach at Mexico High School. Currently, he coaches a local boy’s team and is on the Oswego Youth Soccer board. A graduate of Oswego State in 1983, he holds a degree in Elementary Education with a minor in Athletic Coaching. He earned a Masters of Science in 1987 from Oswego. Jeff currently holds a USSF class “D” license. He resides in Oswego with his wife, Terry and 2 children.
Pat Hurley Assistant Coach, 1st year • Center Moriches, New York Pat comes to Oswego with a lot of college experience. Pat played his high school soccer at Center Moriches High School in New York. While there, he was a 2 time All League Conference player and was named All-County his senior year. Pat spent 2 years at Southern Connecticut State University. His team appeared in the NCAA those years. Pat came to Oswego State as a player in his junior year where he was a 2 year starter and captain. He led Oswego to 2 conference tournament appearances. Pat was named to the All Conference Team as well as All Tournament Team. Currently, Pat is a Technology Education major.
Byron McMichael Assistant Goalkeeper Coach, 1st year • Kinderhook, New York Byron is a former goalkeeper at Oswego State. Previously, at Icabod Crane High School, Byron was named to the 1st team Patroon All Conference, Section 2 All League 1st Team, Class A Goalkeeper of the Year and 3rd team All State. Currently, Byron is a Meteorology and Mathematics major.

Greg Blette Sophomore Midfielder/Forward Lake View, New York
Career Highlights Greg played in all 21 games and started an impressive 17. As a freshman he had 3 goals, one of which was an impressive game winner against SUNY Morrisville.
Before Oswego Greg was a 4 year player and 3 year starter at Frontier High School. During his last two years he was named captain. In his junior year, Greg was named to the ECIC 2nd Team. Greg’s senior year was equally as successful as he was named to the ECIC 1st Team and earned the Daryl J. Krentz Award for Outstanding Senior Soccer Player. Greg played travel soccer with the Hamburg Soccer Club and Buffalo United Premier.
Coaches Comments “Greg is a strong central player who can move the ball around all over the field. He is able to score goals and is a very good defender. He is dangerous both offensively and defensively in the air. We are looking for Greg to continue to be an important part of our offense and defense.”

Career Highlights Jeff did not participate in 2006 due to an injury. He has played in 22 games in his 2 years as an Oswego State Laker.
Before Oswego Jeff played his high school soccer at nearby CiceroNorth Syracuse High School. During 2005 and 2006, Jeff was part of the Open Men’s Empire State Games. In 2005, he was an alternate and won a spot on the final roster in 2006. Jeff plays for the Northstars Soccer Club.

Chris Carra Sophomore Midfielder/Defender Endwell, New York
Career Highlights Chris played in all 21 games and started 14. As a freshman 2 of his 3 goals were game winners, one of which was an impressive blast against SUNY New Paltz.
Before Oswego Chris was a 3 year varsity player and starter for Maine-Endwell High School. In his senior year he was a captain and was named to the Southern Tier Athletic Conference (STAC) All-Division team in 2005. Chris helped his team to a Class “A” Championship in 2004 and a trip to the State Regional game as well as STAC Title game in 2003. Chris’ travel club team the B.C United Fusion were State Cup Finalists for 4 consecutive years.

Michael Kincaid Sophomore Forward Amsterdam, NL
Career Highlights Michael scored 5 goals for us last year as a freshman. His goal against SUNY New Paltz was one of the biggest. This goal tied the game for Oswego State which eventually was won by the Lakers in overtime.
Before Oswego Michael played his high school soccer at AFNORTH International School in the Netherlands where he was a 4 year varsity starter and captain the last 3 years. During that career, he scored 54 goals while providing 34 assists. Michael earned 1st team All Conference in 2004 and 2005. He was also named to the All Europe 2nd Team in 2004 and 1st team in 2005. In 2005, he received his teams Most Valuable Player Award. While in the United States, Michael was on the Olympic Development Program 87’s team during 2001-2003.

Jordon LeBrun Sophomore Defender Whitby, Ontario, Canada
Career Highlights Jordan played in 14 games as a freshman.
Before Oswego Jordon played and started 3 years of soccer at Father Leo J. Austin Catholic Secondary School in Canada. During that career he totaled 13 goals and 20 assists. Jordon’s teams were credited with Lake Ontario Secondary School Athletics (LOSSA) Regional Champions in 2004 and 2005. They also advanced to the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Association Quarter-Finals in 2004 and 2005. His travel team has played in the Canadian Super Y-League and O.Y.S.L. for the Toronto Jr. Lynx and Woodbridge Strikers 88’s. In 2002 playing for the Oshawa Kicks he was a silver-medalist in the USA Cup Final. Jordon currently plays for the Ajax Gunners PU-21E in the O.S.L.

Career Highlights Nick had a quality win versus SUNY Morrisville in 2006.
Before Oswego Nick played his high school soccer at Arlington High School where he was a 2 year varsity player and a starter in his senior year. In 2004-2005 his team earned league titles. He was name as an All-League selection in 2005. Nick’s talents had him playing for the Olympic Development Program 88’s for 1 year. His travel team was the F.C. Westchester 88’s and has also played in the Super Y League for the Westchester Flames.

Career Highlights In his two years as a Laker, Craig has played in 36 games and started 10, scoring 4 goals and 3 assists.
Before Oswego Craig previously played his high school soccer at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Secondary School in Canada. While there he was a 4 year letterman and starter. During his time playing soccer, he scored 23 goals for a team that was the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations (OFSAA) 2004 Champion and the 2005 Runner Up. During his senior year, Craig was his teams Most Valuable Player. Career Highlights Justin did not play in 2005 and much of 2006 due to injury. He has played in 8 games in his two years as a Laker.
Before Oswego Justin played soccer at Burnt HillsBallston Lake Central Schools. He was named the Most Improved Player for his Junior Varsity team. He has played travel soccer for the Capital United Club team in the Capital District Youth Soccer League. He was named captain for that team. As a junior and senior, Justin realized his running potential and became a cross country runner. He qualified for the State Meet in 2001 and 2002 where he finished 22nd and 50th. He was named Most Valuable Player each year.

Michael Roorda Junior Midfielder Rochester, New York
Career Highlights His game winning goal against St. John Fisher in October 2006 helped the Oswego State Lakers earn a berth into the ECAC Tournament. Michael played in 40 games over the last two years and was a starter in 20 games.
Before Oswego Michael played his high school soccer at Aquinas Institute High School. He is a two time letterman earning a captain’s role in his senior year. In 2003, Michael was a member of the Section V Class B Champion team and was a New York State Class B Champion. During his 2 years of varsity play, his team’s record was 41-1-2. Michael received many awards during his years in high school. He earned the Most Improved Varsity player in his junior year, Coaches Award and the City/Catholic League Honorable Mention team award his senior year. Michael has played for the Chili Fire in the Rochester District Youth Soccer League (RDYSL).

Career Highlights In two years of college soccer, Jeremy played in 29 games and started 17.
Before Oswego Jeremy played soccer for Newburgh Free Academy High School. He was a 4 year letterman, 3 year starter and captain his senior year. His 2005 team earned the title of Section IX Champion. Jeremy earned the Most Valuable Player award and was named the 2005 Newburgh Lions Award for Overall Athlete in Newburgh. Jeremy’s travel team was the Cornwall Shooters.

Career Highlights Shaun started in 20 games. As a first year college transfer he earned 9 wins, 3 of which were shutouts. His hard work and athletic ability help the Oswego State Lakers cut its goals against average in half from 2005 to 2006.
Before Oswego Shaun was a 2 year letterman and starter for New York’s Sachem High School. In 29 games, Shaun had 184 saves and 7 shutouts. That play provided him the opportunity to participate in the Suffolk County Exceptional Senior game. During the spring and summer sessions, Shaun played in the Long Island Junior “Division One” League for the Sachem Jaguars. In 2003, Shaun was chosen to play in the Empire State Games for the Long Island Region, but was unable to play due to an injury. Previously, Shaun played Junior College at Suffolk County Community College where his team had an excellent record of 13-3-1. During that season, Shaun recorded 7 shutouts with a .56 goals against average.

Steve Tracy Junior Defender Vilseck, Germany
Career Highlights In two years since Steve’s arrival at Oswego State he has played in 31 games and started 10.
Before Oswego Steven played his soccer at Vilseck-American High School in Vilseck, Germany. He lettered in Varsity Men’s soccer during his freshman year. In 2004 and 2005 Steven led his team as a captain while Vilseck appeared in the All European championships. During that time, he was an award recipient for the All European team. Steven was also a football player where he was named co-captain of the Vilseck Falcon’s Varsity Football team. He led this team to a Division II All European conference semi-final appearance in 2004 and 2005. He was also awarded All Conference, Division II football kicker in 2004 and All Conference, Division II running back and kicker in 2005. He earned his teams most valuable Offensive Player of the Year for 2005.

Career Highlights Scott played in 37 games and started 25 in his two years as a Laker.
Before Oswego Scott comes to the United States after playing his high school ball at Beacon Christian Secondary School in Canada. For this team, he was a 4 year letterman and starter. During his last 2 years he proved he was a leader by being named captain. In the off season, Scott plays outside midfield for St. Catherines Roma of the Provincial Under 21 West League.

John played 1 year as a starter for the Shaker High School soccer team in Latham, New York. As part of his high school accomplishments, he participated in the Capital District Selection College Showcase. During the other seasons of the year, John has played for East Greenbush Gladiators, Blackwatch and Shenentaha. Playing for these teams has provided him with various outstanding opportunities such as: a State Cup Championship, a Snicker Regional Tournament bid, a US Club Soccer National Finalist, a Super Y Championship in the New England Division, and an Eastern New York Soccer Association Championship.

Ryan received the All Greater Rochester Honorable Mention Award for 2 years and participated in the Section 5 All-Star/Senior game. He has also played for the Webster Soccer Association and Rochester Futbol Club. Those teams played in the prestigious Rochester District Youth Soccer League (RDYSL) Division 1 and Upstate Premier League where they were champions in the Clifton Park, Brockport and Webster Tournament.

Felipe played his high school soccer at Ichabod Crane High School in Valatie, New York. While there he was a 3 year varsity starter. He was named captain his senior year. During Felipe’s career he was credited with 45 goals and 50 assists. His senior year team was named the Patroon Conference Champion. Felipe made 2nd team all star status his sophomore year and earned 1st team all league his junior and senior year. He also achieved the “Player of the Year” runner up award. In the off season, Felipe played for the Detroit Crane Shenentawa in the Capital District’s (CDYSL) Division II and Premier League.

German was hooked on soccer at age 4 in Flushing Meadow Park with the Inca’s from Queens. He was a 4 year varsity player and senior starter at Freeport High School in Freeport, NY. As a midfielder he scored 4 goals and contributed 10 assists for the 2005 AA II Conference Champions. He has been inducted on the Freeport High School Wall of Fame, named 2006 AA I All Conference Player, and participated on the Nassau County Exceptional Senior Team. German also plays for Freeport United in the LIJSL Division One. His teams were Waldbaums Cup Finalist, 2004 Division IV Champions, and 2005 Division III Champions. German also participated on the 2005 Long Island Olympic Development Team (ODP).

Dean was a 4 year starter playing for Mechanicville High School in Mechanicville, New York. During his last 3 years he was named captain for a team that won the 2005 Class C Sectional Championship. Dean tallied 28 goals during those years. Some of his accomplishment include: Capital District Youth Soccer League Scholarship Award, Soccer Booster Club Award, MVP Defense Award, Colonial Council All Star, Honorable Mention & 2nd Team Colonial Council All Star, 1st Team Defender 2004 All Area Boys Soccer Team, and Athlete of the Week. Dean has played for Mechanicville Stillwater United Soccer Club (MSUSC) and was a member of the 2005 Olympic Development Program (ODP).

Steve was a former 3 year defensive starter for Newfield High School in Newfield, New York. During his senior year in 2006, he scored 2 goals and contributed 3 assists. He was named All League and was named the team’s Most Dedicated Player. Steve also plays for the Newfield Saints in the Long Island Junior Soccer League (LIJSL). With that team, he was captain of the U-17 Division 1 Champions.

Jonathan Kuracina played for Bayridge Secondary School in Kingston, Ontario, Canada. Jonathan was a 2 year varsity player and starter during his junior and senior year. During that time, his teams earned a 3rd and 4th place finish for the Eastern Ontario Secondary Schools Athletic Association (EOSSAA) division. They also earned a 5th place finish in the Ontarian Federation of School Athletic Association (OFSAA) division. Jonathon’s career statistics include 15 goals and 14 assists. Ben’s high school soccer was played at 2 different schools. He played for Trenton High School and Afnorth International High School in the Netherlands. He was a 3 year varsity starter and was named captain his senior year. His teams earned many awards including: Bay of Quinte Champs, COSSA Champs, Conference Champions D2 in 2006 and a 3rd Place Europeans Ramstein in 2006. In 2006, Ben was named the Defensive Player of the Year and was on the All-Conference team D2. In the off season, Ben plays for the De Ster team in the 3e Klasse League. Ben played 12 years in Canada, 1 year in Germany and another year in the Netherlands.

Tom played his high school soccer at Broadalbin-Perth High School in Broadalbin, New York. He was a 4 year starter and 2 year captain his last 2 years. He scored 30 goals and contributed with 60 assists. He was a Section II first team All-Star in 2003 and 2004. Tom was also the Foothill leagues Most Valuable Player in 2004 and was 4th Team All-State. In Junior College at SUNY Cobleskill, he scored 4 goals and had 12 assists. He was credited with scoring a quick goal in 11 seconds and matched that by doing it again the same year. In the off season, Tom plays for the Shenentaha Mad Dogs in the Premier Division

ABOUT SUNY OSWEGO History Oswego State has a history of competition on and off the field with dedicated studentathletes. The college was created in 1861 as a teacher-training institution and was a founding member of the State University of New York’s statewide system in 1948. Academics Oswego offers some of the best academic and athletic support programs in Division III for its student-athletes, including sponsorship of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) and Student-Athlete Mentor (SAM) programs. Oswego is proud to have developed one of the leading NCAA Challenging Athletic Minds for Personal Success (CHAMPS)/Life Skills programs. Environment Oswego’s 8,300 students enjoy the scenic 690-acre campus along the shores of historic Lake Ontario. The city of Oswego offers the combination of small-town ambiance and big-city proximity, as it is about one hour from Rochester and 45 minutes from Syracuse. Facilities The varsity athletic facilities include the Campus Center, Laker Hall and the South Athletic Complex providing homes for the school’s 24 intercollegiate teams. Oswego competes in Division III with affiliations with the NCAA and the State University of New York Athletic Conference, the Eastern College Athletic Conference and the New York State Women’s Collegiate Athletic Association.

Fast Facts SUNY Oswego enrolls about 8,200 students, 6,600 of them full-time undergraduates. About 3,880 students live on campus among the college’s 12 residence halls. Overall, Oswego’s lakeside campus stretches for almost 700 acres and includes 45 buildings. More than half (55 percent) of Oswego’s students major in disciplines within the College of Arts and Sciences, which emphasizes a traditional liberal studies curriculum as well as some professional tracks. LAKERS IN THE CLASSROOM Oswego State student-athletes receive numerous academic honors and awards. SUNYAC Commissioner’s List The SUNYAC Commissioner’s List recognizes student-athletes who have achieved a cumulative grade-point average of 3.3 or higher and have been at Oswego State for at least three semesters. SUNYAC All-Academic Teams The SUNYAC All-Academic Teams recognize student-athletes who have achieved a semester grade-point average of 3.3 or higher. Award for Academic Excellence Oswego State student-athletes who have maintained a cumulative grade-point average of 3.0 or greater annually receive the Academic Award for Excellence. Special Individual Awards Special individual awards -- including the Donald Snygg Award and Oswego Woman Scholar Athlete Award -- are also presented annually. Mentors Oswego State student-athletes are supported academically and athletically by a dedicated group of faculty mentors. One faculty mentor is assigned to each team.
CHAMPS/Life Skills Today’s student-athletes are faced with many challenges both on and off the playing field. High expectations face each student-athlete and create demands which challenge his or her athletic, academic and emotional capabilities. With this in mind, the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) created a program to assist student-athletes in acquiring the education and experiences necessary for success in virtually every aspect of life. Developed in 1994, the Challenging Athletic Minds for Personal Success (CHAMPS)/Life Skills Program has taken root at Oswego State and more than 400 other colleges and universities. Oswego State has incorporated CHAMPS/Life Skills into its Oswego Athletes Striving to Incorporate Skills for Success (OASIS) program since 1996. It consists of the following five commitment areas: athletic excellence, academic excellence, personal development, career development and service The mission of the program is to reach each student-athlete based on his or her individual needs while concentrating on the overall development of a whole, wellrounded person. FACILITIES Athletics at Oswego has always been a vital part of campus life... the Lakers’ outstanding competitive facilities have served the athletics program well.
Laker Hall Oswego’s primary indoor facility is Laker Hall, built in 1968, which serves as the home of the Oswego State athletic department. Within Laker Hall is the 3,500-seat Max Ziel Gymnasium, named for the Lakers’ former department chair and coach. The Max Ziel gym hosts the men’s and women’s basketball, women’s volleyball, and men’s wrestling programs. This gymnasium has three full-length basketball courts that can be used for volleyball. Laker Hall also includes an auxiliary gym used by many Oswego State programs. Laker Hall also holds the Laker Pool, complete with six lanes and separate diving well. The Oswego State wrestling program has a 40-foot by 80-foot practice area with two regulation practice circles. A new, renovated weight training room, with expanded workout facilities and equipment for the varsity teams, opened this fall to service the college’s commitment to the well-being and readiness of studentathletes. Laker Hall also hosts recreational facilities for racquetball and squash.

The Campus Center The convocation center/ice arena in the brand-new Campus Center hosts the men’s and women’s ice hockey programs. This state-of-the-art facility opened in October 2006. The Campus Center complex represents the new social hub of campus, connecting with renovated Swetman and Poucher halls.

Oswego’s outdoor facilities are extensive. The Laker Field complex adjacent to Laker and Romney includes game and practice fields for baseball, softball, track and field, field hockey, soccer, and lacrosse. It also includes six tennis courts used by both the men’s and women’s programs.
OSWEGO STATE SOCCER: Dedicated to Local Youth Development Area boys and girls can learn the advanced skills and techniques of one of America’s fastest growing sports – soccer – right here in Oswego County! Under the direction of Oswego States Men’s Soccer Coach Robert Friske participants will be offered programs designed to develop young players in all facets of the game. Soccer is a game of skill, tactics and technique. Coach Friske will teach these fundamentals through his individual, team and camp opportunities. Each opportunity is designed to increase individual and team skills in an atmosphere that is challenging, competitive and fun.
