Swimming & Diving Hall of Athletes Inductees Joe Verdeur ‘50 Charter Member - Inducted 1961 During Lifetime set 19 world records. Repeatedly broke his own USA and world records in the 200-yard and 200-meter breaststroke events. Participated in the 1948 Olympics in London and won the 200-meter breaststroke with a new Olympic record time of 2:39.3. Named Swimmer of the Year by Sport Magazine in 1948 and 1949. Inducted into the International Swimming Hall of Fame and the Helms Foundation Hall of Fame. Legendary sportswriter Grantland Rice called him “the greatest swimmer of the first half century.”
champion in 400 IM, 500 free and 1,650 free. Named to All-East each year. Set Explorer record in 500 freestyle (1987) and 400 IM relay (1988).
George Haggerty '55 Inducted 1955 Named All-American swimmer, 1955. Finished fifth in the NCAA Championships and third in the Eastern Intercollegiates the same year. His time in the 200-yard breaststroke was an Explorer record for many years.
John K. Lyons Inducted 2002 Coaches' Corner Coached La Salle men's and women's swimming from 1982-1999. Guided Explorer teams to 17 conference titles (12 in MAAC, three in MCC and two in ECC). His victory total is the highest of any swimming coach in La Salle history. Named MAAC Coach of the Year eight times and MCC Coach of the Year three times. Became associate athletic director for the Explorers in 1999.
Peter E. Walheim, Jr. '60 Inducted 1966 Cross Country, Swimming, and Track and Field Was the only La Salle athlete for decades to have captained three sports, winning eight letters in cross country, swimming, and track and field. Unbeaten in dual meets in 1959, won the MAC mile title in 1960 and scored consistently in backstroke and butterfly events in swimming. Patrick Kennedy '55 Inducted 1975 One of La Salle's greatest divers. Undefeated in 27 dual meet competitions in Explorer career. Among his various titles, Pat captured both the 1-meter and 3-meter diving board Middle Atlantic AAU Senior championships in 1949 and 1950. Later coached diving at La Salle in the 1970's. Thomas Johnson '69 Inducted 1990 Established MAC records in the 200-yard individual medley in 1967, the 200-yard butterfly and 500-yard freestyle in 1968, and the 400-yard freestyle in 1969, when he won All-American honors. With teammate, set the Explorers' 800-yard relay record in the 1968 College Division championships. Kathleen Smith Prindible '82 Inducted 1993 Outstanding diver from the 1-meter and 3-meter boards during four years of competition. As a sophomore, was unbeaten in the 3-meter event and had only one loss at the 1-meter. In 1980-81, helped lead a team which was 12-2 in dual meets. As a senior, continued dominance in both events and was the only La Salle female diver ever selected AIAW All-American. Cheryl Coppola '95 Inducted 1991 Outstanding Diver of the MAAC by winning 1-meter and 3-meter championships in 1991 and 1994. Won some honors for ECAC and MCC, 1993 and 1994. Named National Catholic League Diver of the Year 1992 and 1994. Holds Explorer records for 1 and 3 meter diving. Qualified for NCAA Championships all four years. After La Salle career, reached semifinals in US Senior Nationals. Participated in Olympic Torch relay, 1996. Kimberly Long '88 Inducted 2001 Became first La Salle woman swimmer to win an Eastern championship with a victory in the 1,650-yard (1985). Named Outstanding Woman Swimmer in MAAC Championships (1985). Was three-time MAAC
Thomas F. McKeon III '78 Inducted 2001 One of the premier ECC swimmers of the 1970's. ECC champion in the 100 and 200 freestyle events, 1976 and 1977. Won Eastern Seaboard 100 freestyle, 1977. Member of the 400 freestyle relay team which set the ECC record in the Conference Championship final and which qualified for NCAA's. Set Explorer records in the 100 and 200 freestyle and 200 IM.
Joseph Dieterle '65 Inducted 2003 Set La Salle record (which stood for nine years) in the MAC Championship in 100-yard breaststroke, 1964. Helped set and re-set La Salle records in the 400-yard medley relay. Selected by College Swimming Coaches Association of America to NCAA All-American teams, 1964 and 1965. Dina Dormer '98 Inducted 2005 Named Most Outstanding Performer at the A-10 Championships, 1996. Received same award and also ECAC Most Outstanding Swimmer recognition, 1997. Named to A-10 All-Conference team, 1998. First female Explorer swimmer to qualify for NCAA Championships, 1998. Voted as La Salle's Outstanding Woman Swimmer four times (1995-98), setting seven school records. Deidre Lynch ‘94 Inducted 2006 Captured three events to help La Salle win the MAAC Championship (1992). Named to MAAC All-Academic Team (1992). Chosen Midwestern Collegiate Conference Outstanding Swimmer (1993 and 1994). Named National Catholic Championships MVP (1994). Throughout career broke six individual Explorer records. At time of her induction, 200 backstroke record still standing. Charles "Skip" Trowbridge ‘65 Inducted 2006 Initially helped set La Salle record for 400-yard medley relay (1963). Named All-American in 400-yard medley relay 1964 and 1965. Also swam 100-yard backstroke at NCAA Championship in 1964. Twice helped La Salle team to overall runner-up finish in MAC Championship meet (1964-1965). He and his teammates went on to break 400-yard medley relay several times throughout career. John Madden ‘87 Inducted 2008 Madden was an NCAA qualifier in both 1987 and 1988 in diving, finish- ing 16th in 1-meter in '87. He was also a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Diving Champion. Madden set school and pool records in the 1meter in both '86 and '87 with a score of 529.75, which after the '99-00 season became just Kirk Pool records.
Karo Isajan ‘07 Inducted 2012 Isajan was the four-time Atlantic 10 Diver of the Year from 2004-07 and was the first Explorer to qualify for the NCAA Diving Championship in 20 years. He holds the school record in the 1-meter and 3-meter spring- board events, the Kirk Pool record in the 1-meter event and set the Atlantic 10 Championship record in the 3-meter in 2007. Isajan also won the NCAA Zone A 3-meter springboard diving event as a senior. He won five Atlantic 10 Championships, including four in the 3-meter spring- board event Bob Moore ‘66 Inducted 2012 Moore won the 200 butterfly at the 1966 NCAA Championships and also earned All-America honors in the 100 butterfly that season. A MAC champion in the 100 butterfly, 200 butterfly, 400 freestyle relay and 400 medley relay, Moore helped the Explorers finish third at NCAAs in 1964 and fifth in 1965 and 1966. He set school records in 100 butterfly, 200 butterfly, 400 freestyle relay and 400 medley relay. Moore also helped La Salle to the 1966 MAC Championship. The Philadelphia native also participated in the 1964 U.S. Olympic Swimming Trials in the 100m butterfly. Melanie Coots Platchek ‘02 Inducted 2013 Became the first Atlantic 10 diver to win three consecutive “Diver of the Meet” awards from 2000-02. She was also a four-time qualifier for NCAA Zone 'A'. Coots won six Atlantic 10 Championships, three in the 1-meter and three in the 3-meter and still holds two school records, the 3-meter (293.93, 2001) and 3-meter, 11 dives (470.70, 2001). She also finished second twice at A-10s. Academically, she was the 2002 La Salle Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year and a three-time Academic All-Atlantic 10 selection. Jon Walheim ‘66 Inducted 2013 An All-American on five occasions during his career and reached the NCAA finals six other times. He finished second in the 100 freestyle at the 1964 NCAA Championship and fourth in the 50 and 100 freestyle at the 1965 NCAA Championship. He also played an integral role on the 400 free relay teams which earned All-America status in 1964 and 1965.He enjoyed tremendous success at the MAC Championships, taking home the gold in the 50 and 100 free in 1964 and 1966. His 400 free and medley relays captured the top spot at the 1966 conference championship as well. Walheim graduated with school records in the 50 and 100 freestyle. Walheim also received an NCAA Post-Graduate Scholarship in the first year it was awarded. James Abel ‘66 Inducted 2014 A two-time All-American for the Explorers in the 500 and 1650 yard freestyle. Abel helped the Explorers finish third at the NCAA Championship in 1964 and fifth in 1965 and 1966. He won the 1966 Middle Atlantic Conference Championship in the 500 freestyle and set school records in the 200, 500 and 1650 yard freestyle.
