Getting started with NCCP Training

WHO IS IT FOR?

It begins here. Coaches are mentors, motivators and leaders. Along with parents and teachers, coaches have a profound impact on the future of our children. It’s a great responsibility, and Canada’s two million coaches embrace it with passion and dedication. The National Coaching Certification Program (NCCP) gives coaches the confidence to succeed. When you take an NCCP workshop, you’ll not only gain sport-specific technical abilities, but also mentoring and decision-making skills. NCCP training will open doors to new opportunities in coaching and in life.

NCCP workshops are designed for all types of coaches. Whether you’re thinking about coaching your child’s community team or you’re already the head coach of a national team, NCCP has workshops to meet your needs. HOW MUCH TIME DOES IT TAKE? NCCP training doesn’t require much time. Individual workshops can be completed in a single evening, and some workshops can now be taken online at your convenience. WHERE DO I START? The National Coaching Certification Program (NCCP) makes it easy to get started and stay motivated on the path towards coaching skills development. The chart on the following page will help you to find the path that’s right for you.

Who are you? You may already coach at the community level or you’re thinking about coaching. Often, you’re a parent with little background in lacrosse or coaching. You may only coach for a short time while your child is involved.

COMMUNITY COACH INITIATION

Your next steps The NCCP Community Sport lacrosse clinics are the ideal place to start if you’re new to coaching and want to learn the fundamentals of lacrosse and coaching. This initiation into coaching gives you all the tools you need to coach your first season.

MEET THE COMMUNITY SPORT COACH

Brad McFadden

Mini Tyke & Novice AssISTANT Coach Tyke Head Coach

As a former Phys Ed. & Recreation instructor in the Air Force, I’ve always had a passion for coaching. Five years ago I noticed that my son’s Mini Tykes coach needed support so I volunteered to help. Since then, I’ve played the role of both assistant and head coach. My NCCP training helps me to remember how responsible we, as coaches, are for keeping kids in the game. If we’re creating fun, positive experiences for our young players, they’ll want to continue learning and competing for years to come. When a player says,“thanks coach!” it makes it all worthwhile.

Give yourself the confidence and tools necessary to coach lacrosse at the community sport level with skills like how to plan a practice, how best to support your athletes during training, and how to make ethical decisions. MEET THE COMPETITION COACH JEN CASSIDY U 17 ONTARIO TEAM

I have been involved in Women’s Field Lacrosse as a player and coach for 12 years. My greatest moment in coaching was seeing the pride and determination of the U19 team when they beat Australia during pool play at the 2007 World Championships. I became a coach to experience my sport on a new level, and to help others realize their potential. It’s important to me to share everything that field lacrosse has given me with new generations of players. My NCCP training has shown me that everyone has a different way of approaching a situation – and that’s okay.

Learn how to teach your athletes the key principles behind a team’s offence and defence and introduce them to the concept of special team play.
