Winter 2010
A word from the President Greetings! The snow is on its way! Winter is soon upon us, and it's time to be thinking about the holidays, and getting all our quilting projects done for our families and friends. We will be having our Christmas party at Kathy Homan's home again, however the party will begin at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday December 11th. We will begin with our monthly meeting, and drawing for the Christmas Block Challenge, we currently have 23 blocks and are hoping for more! I have extended the date for turning in your blocks to no later than December 8th; please turn them at Quilt Essential. Thank you to all who have participated, we have enough for 2 drawings and are hoping for 3 winners! Remember, the more blocks you make the more chances you have to win! We have decided to not have an ornament exchange this year, and are asking all members who attend the party to bring some treats to share. In January we will install our new officers. We still need a secretary and a membership chairperson. So please be thinking about where you can help out, it's greatly appreciated. We will be also having a class in Zippy Strippy Pouches, there are 3 different sizes, and make wonderful gifts. The Terry Atkinson pattern is available at Quilt Essential. The class will be January 8, 2011. We have rescheduled the LRQG 25th Anniversary Celebration in connection with Shiverfest, which is February 18-20, 2011. I hope to see everyone at the Christmas party on the 11th. And I would like to thank you all for having me act as your president for these past two years, I've really enjoyed it!

Marlys went to a great lecture by Mary Sorensen called “Buy Everything! A Practical Approach to Fabric Selection”. With lots of humor Mary said the magic words are: Consider contrast & Hue & Buy Everything! Consider contrast & value & Buy Everything! We get the idea ...Buy Everything!

Sherry and Helen took a Photoshop computer class and bought a “Noel Christmas” appliqué kit. Sherry bought a new tool for prairie points that maybe we can get her to demonstrate to the guild soon! Their favorite quilts were a yo-yo quilt that was made with over 2000 yo-yo’s, and a beautiful quilt depicting a man whose wife had died from cancer. She had written him love letters while she was ill.

[email protected] Fabric 101 Most of know there is a difference in the quality of fabric at a quilt shop and a ‘big box’ or chain fabric store, but do you know why? Premium fabric starts with premium ‘greige’ (pronounced gray) goods. That is the fabric under all the beautiful colors and patterns. Premium greige goods have a thread count of at least 60 by 60. That is 60 vertical and 60 horizontal threads per inch. Most have even higher thread counts. The higher the thread count, the tighter the weave is, the silkier the fabric feels, the better it wears, the less it beards when it’s quilted and the better the definition of the print on top of the fabric . Most chain store fabric have fewer than 60 by 60 construction. It feels stiff to the touch, and frequently you can even see through the weave. It is also usually made with cheaper inks and dyes, which result in bleeding and fading with each washing. The quality of the fabric is also determined by the length and quality of the individual threads. Quilt shop quality fabric has longer, thicker cotton threads. These cost more as raw materials and you will pay more for the finished product. Quilt shop quality fabric usually use more colors in their prints. Each color requires another trip through the printing process. If you’ve ever done stenciling on your walls, you have different stencils for different colors, and each color needs to be lined up with colors already on the wall so the pattern comes out correctly. The same thing happens with fabric. The more trips through the printer, the more detail on the final print. All of those color dots on the salvage are the individual colors used in that print, and each one is a separate layer on the fabric. The final process is the finishing. This is a chemical bath the printed fabric goes through that sets the dye in the fabric. Poorly finished fabric is stiff and course to the touch. Premium fabrics are finished with a longer, more time consuming process. This gives it the silky feel we all love. Once in a while you will even see a brand name or the same print at a chain store, with a lower price. Be careful! These are often made with lower quality griege goods and may be printed with lower quality dyes. As with most things in life, you get what you pay for. Consider all the time and effort you are putting into this quilt. You want it to last for a long time. The extra money you pay for quality fabric is worth it in the long run.
for our Christmas party, and once again to Katie for donating the backings for our wheelchair quilts.
